English Language Specialist Jesse Kiendl provided daylong workshops, in conjunction with the Bulgarian National Spelling Bee, for English teachers (grades 1-8) in regional centers around Bulgaria. The training days aim to enable English teachers to think more critically about achieving learning objectives through slight modifications in their current classroom practice. The workshops focus on activities to help students practice speaking, spelling, and using new vocabulary, and involve an experiential approach that allows teachers to try out activities and then analyze ways the activities can be incorporated in their classrooms.
UW-Madison’s Language Institute hosted World Languages Day on November 14, 2013 at Union South. This exciting, college-for-a-day experience introduces more than 600 Wisconsin high school students and their teachers to many of the world languages and cultural topics offered at UW-Madison. The event, which features faculty, students and staff, aims to inspire students to pursue a second or third language regardless of their educational and career goals.

On December 17, 2015, English Language Fellow, Anne Talavera, chatted about American holiday traditions and celebrations at the U.S.Embassy's new American Center in Vientiane, Lao P.D.R. Over 70 students and their families from the local Lao community attended the event. Anne wanted to communicate the many different ways in which the holiday season is celebrated throughout the U.S. She discussed the history and traditions of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas. She even shared pictures and anecdotes of her own family's food and traditions back home in California. Anne also facilitated a snowflake-making arts and crafts activity, shared a recipe for homemade apple cider and the kissing tradition of the mistletoe, all of which the students very much enjoyed. Santa even made a surprise appearance! He delighted the audience with his ho-ho-ho's and distributed small gifts to everyone. Anne wrapped up the event with FLOTUS Michelle Obama's reading of " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas."
A5 drawing. Drawing inspired by pictures I've taken of marks in sand. They made me think of ancient languages and forgotten tokens. I find it exciting to think that the waves of the sea has its own language.

Natural Language by Jennifer Macklem and Kip Jones, located in front of the Kelowna Public Library. This work rotates on an axis and is very easy to turn, but I couldn't tell if a wind was capable of turning it due to the lack of breeze.
Just an interesting sign I saw in the Muslim restaurant on campus. Can't tell if it's Arabic or Uyghur or what, but it's interesting that whatever language(s) are there, both Arabic and Latin script are used.

I am the last advocate for reducing texts, scriptures and languages to mere graphic forms. The whole dimension of the text's meaning, histories, combinations, connotations, sound and craft is disregarded. What is more problematic is that I am ignoring the power of words to move and persuade people.
After first year and my first internship, I felt slightly disillusioned and confused by what Architecture meant to me. I took a trip to Myanmar and the trip recalibrated a lot things. I found it particularly grounding and inspiring for some of the things that I want to achieve in the future.
The spatial and formal organisation of the Burmese language in signage was something I found very compelling. At least with the handwritten texts, so much thought and effort was put into crafting every character. You see pencil marks, underlays, brush strokes and outlines. There is a combination of type faces and textures to create visual impact in different programmatic contexts that I find fascinating.
The Burmese name for the round script is "ca-lonh", literally translating to "round text". There are 33 main characters in the Myanmar language. Instead of words that are formed by a combination of alphabets (like in English), this language makes use of additional vowel shift symbols, tonal change symbols and consonant modification symbols. The rounded form of the characters is a result of the use of palm laves a the traditional writing material. Straight lines and forms would tear the leaves.
By compiling this, I am exposing my status as alien and an outsider. However, the focus on the visuals may have the inverse effect of celebrating the text, for text's sake, specifically, it is celebrated as visual form and not just a sign that says "eggs", or something.
Regardless, I tried to interpret the scope of "text" in a broad but focused way - text, in its literal form, text in prayer, text in recitation, text in architectural program (the stupas of Kuthodaw Pagoda). Photos are arranged in chronological order. The journey started in Yangon, then upstream along the Ayarwaddy river, to Mandalay and Bagan, then back again to Yangon.
These photos aren't really anything special in terms of photography, and I am not going to attempt to make sweeping claims about directing a new visual order, but as a composite they attempt to represent my yearning to celebrate a culture of appreciation for the process driven intensity in text making and in the creation of form.

Not great pictures, but I had so much fun watching the sign language interpreters re-enact the songs that the Hillbillies were playing. The lady was SO into it, it was genuinely fun to watch. This was Ghost Riders in the Sky and during the "yippie kay-yay, yippie kay-yo" part she did this slow motion lasso move? And it was so cool.
English Language Fellow Hannah Murphy along with Tesfaye Habtemariam and Mulualem Eshete, faculty members from the Department of English Language and Literature at Arba Minch University, delivered training on how to use English in the class rooms for #ArbaMinch University instructors. The goal of the workshop was to provide instructors with an opportunity to discuss the role of English in their classrooms and think critically about their own use of English in their classrooms.
