A wonderful courtyard landscape concept inspired by the arc of the moon over the serene arctic tundra, with a series of abstract elements.

LUC worked as lead consultants and landscape architects through the detailed design and implementation stages of the restoration of Bushey Rose Garden. It was designed by Thomas Mawson in 1912 for Sir Hubert von Herkomer, a successful Victorian artist, and was originally part of the garden of Lululaund, Herkomer’s house.
Detailed investigations allowed a comprehensive historically accurate restoration that included the refurbishment of the Rose Temple, original tufa stone fountain, the pergola, Grade II listed Summer house, and original brick paving.
Bespoke restoration commissions include benches copied from Mawson’s designs, Rose pillars and a bronze plaque which was replicated from historic photographs, the original having been stolen in 1967. The Cloister, which was part of Herkomers Art School has been reconfigured into a performance space.
Additions to the garden include the Potting Shed, a gardener’s store and facilities, a small yard, new gates and railings and new paths.
The project was opened to much acclaim with David Mawson, one of Thomas Mawson’s grandsons in attendance.
Bushey Rose Garden is open all year round with free admission and thousands of visitors have enjoyed the garden since it reopened in July 2010.

The boulders are retaining a very steep hillside below the house that leads to the lakeshore. These steps are formed of massive single slabs of local granite. The brick arch was built by the homeowner. The arch marks the transition between the slightly more formal front garden and this side-garden which leads down to the informal lake landscape.
Working with the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) the U.S. Mission invited a group of Landscape Architecture students from the U.S. and Switzerland to develop a long term plan to make the U.S. Mission grounds greener and more sustainable.

Remember that photo we posted on Monday? This is the same yard a year later. It's so fun to see a yard transform like this. Big thanks to our clients for letting us be a part of their homes journey.

LUC was appointed by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council to prepare a master plan to initiate the renaissance of Priory Park, a 17th /18th century landscape park in the historic heart of the town, which became a public park in the mid 20th century.
Our approach was to preserve and restore existing remnants of the 18th century landscape whilst reintroducing “lost” features from that period. We also aimed to restore the late 19th century Pleasure Grounds forming the immediate setting for the Priory, to engage contemporary park users.
Using contemporary landscape techniques informed by the park’s history, our scheme delivers a landscape design of exceptional quality where previously there was a tired park with poor facilities. The scheme works with, not against, the existing qualities of the site, clearing away eyesores and restoring elements of delight for 21st century site users. New features include a cafe, large play area, a skate park, sports pitches and extensive drought tolerant planting.
This project, which opened in 2008, is an excellent demonstration of LUC’s sympathetic and intelligent approach to the restoration and redesign of public parks via the use of extensive historic research, public consultation and careful design detailing. LUC also helped with preparation of the Management & Maintenance Plan and the Park was awarded Green Flag status in Summer 2009.

Working in collaboration with Eric Parry Architects and Latz + Partner, LUC was selected by Saxon Generali Real Estate to design a roof garden at One Fen Court, a new 17-storey mixed-use development at the heart of the City cluster in the City of London.
LUC’s services included planting design, pre-selection and specification, planning and inspection to deliver the soft landscape for the building’s 2,200m2 rooftop terrace. The garden, which is fully accessible to the public, sits 65m above street level and offers 360o views across London’s skyline.
The roof garden is designed to include all the best aspects of a public space whilst integrating building services and energy efficiency requirements. It provides a refreshingly tranquil escape from the dense City cluster and streets below. Our scheme sensitively combines seasonal herbaceous planting with exposure-tolerant and evergreen grasses, vines and espalier fruit. Its centrepiece is a grove of 88 wisteria supported on a pergola, providing shade, scent and shelter to the roof terrace.
As the visitor moves around the garden the quality of light changes with the aspect and the time of day and season. Moving water on the southern edge of the roof provides relief during warm spells.
“It’s gone beyond our expectations, simply because it has a wow factor that we were hoping for but we didn’t dare dream of.” Tina Paillet, Senior Executive at Generali Real Estate

The Roermond community donated money for people in neighborhhods to have spontanious meetings. Therefor the Ont-moetbank project was initiated. The neighbourhood Kapellerlaan wanted such a bench as a meeting place. Back in 2017. A design proces started with the help of the Foundation of Real Remunjse Men, EREK, the local school and me, as designer. After many evenings and meetings there was a plan. The children of the school drew motivs to display on the benches, the Neighbourhood Council determined the place. Contractors were asked to make quotations. There was not much interest. Meanwhile the street was object of a massive reconstruction work, the bench had to wait. The design did not go well, there was no realising firm. At last the community luckily decided the bench was constructed by a well known street futniture construction firm, with a little bit more money added for the resalisation. This is the result, five parts of a semi circular steel bench with wooden seats on it. Aside the children‘s drawings, on a beatiful spot on the Kapellerlaan by the Riviver Roer in Roermond. The bench was erected just beside the Eerste Schot Monument 9-10 mei 1940, to remember the first shots of the World War 2 fallen in our country on this place.

Looking down the new lakefront promenade for the proposed park. The street is new, providing a public face to the lake which is now privatized. New buildings line the street on the left of this photo, mixed use buildings and waterfront property will enhance the vitality of the area.
The 'first flush' canal to the left of the sidewalk in this image cleans the water coming from the city on its way to the lake. The new boulevard is a 'fill' area, but massive amounts of earth are not used. There is parking below the street, and new buildings. Under the promenade are storage and cleaning tanks that discharge the water to the wetland lagoons in the right of this image below the promenade.
The greenhouse on the right provides opportunities for year-round remediation, and spaces to research phytoremediation techniques. The public have access to these spaces all year; the buildings terminate the major east-west roads along the park that lead to the waterfront.
Looking down the alley in the conerstone festival of gardens. Note the use of the rebar as a column to hold the branches, and the use of the Eucalyptus leaves in the wall to the left and obvious reference to the existing grove in the back of this photo.
Better large view.
Although is wasn’t part of the assignment. I decided to play client for myself; what would I want in a home garden if entertaining was the focus? With joy I selected the Spanish Andalucia region as my theme. I love the arches and focal fountain in this design, with the Moor inspired water troughs set into the patio.
