It's hard to explain, but today I was in need of geometry. On a whim, I went up to Mt. Sequoyah and stumbled upon this temporary labyrinth.

For thousands of years people have constructed labyrinths, or sacred paths, as models of their life journey. The earliest labyrinth was first documented on a clay tablet from Pylos, Greece and dated to circa 1200 B.C.E. . The earliest Christian labyrinth dates back to 4th century, a basilica in Algeria. The construction of the Gothic cathedrals in the middle ages witnessed resurgence of labyrinths, used as models for, and in place of, religious pilgrimage. For many, it served as a symbolic pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Seven Fountains labyrinth is based on the design of the labyrinth laid into the cathedral floor at Chartres, France, in 1201.

B1 Labyrinths (Part of My Fierce Festival)

Needless Allies

A guided tour of the city centre where actors

mingle with crowds and audiences find dramas

in neglected alleyways.

One city. Six performers. Countless characters.

Multiple directions. All beginning whilst

travelling on a bicycle, ‘B1 Labyrinths’ is a

guided performance tour round Birmingham city

centre. Familiar places will be made unfamiliar,

landmarks turned inside out, forgotten places

will be brought centre stage. Somewhere in the

thronging city streets are actors, but will you be

able to spot them as they mingle with crowds and

find drama in neglected alleyways?

Standing stone in Lordstones country park, North Yorkshire, with Roseberry Topping in the background.

This recently revamped cafe, camping and glamping site is named after the Lord Stones: three stones on a bronze age barrow that marked the much later boundaries of land owned by Lords Duncan, Dudley De L'Isle and Wharton. It's hard to find any solid info and as there are lots of barrows and massive stones nearby, this might be one of the original Lord Stones or not. It looks like it's been positioned here in recent times, and the labyrinth also looks recently carved!

Labyrinth at Burks United Methodist in Hixson, Tennessee is a 5 circuit, medieval switchback style. Well-tended, it is located behind the church and has 3 benches at the center for those who prefer not to sit on the ground. But the ground is nice for walking and sitting as it's a soft wood chip path and the walls are grass. Woodsy areas neighbor and one might see a white-tailed rabbit bounding away into them, as we did.
