" 'He rises’, cried Ahab” crossed my mind as this 60-foot long finback whale came up for a blow in the Bay of Fundy, September, 2014. "Follow the birds" said our boat captain upon seeing my camera, echoing the words of the doomed Ahab. Wildlife photography was my first love. I've shot all of the big mammals in the American West, but nothing compared to shooting these leviathans. I later got a 75-footer, but a bit farther away.

sunday night my home town had a rare night full of thunderstorms. after sunset i could see the flashes over the ocean from my house, so i headed down to the beach to photograph. i got there at 815 pm and I got home at 5am. during that time the lightning was nonstop. there were multiple cells blowing through. i could see them from a distance and i would watch them move closer until they were just off shore, then watch them as they moved on up north, while another storm was coming up from the south. when i got home at 5 am the lightning was still going strong.

The Angel Oak, near Charleston, SC.

I've never really had any qualms about removing things like powerlines or trash. I went slightly further this time in an attempt to show this place in a more naturalistic state, but don't want to misrepresent anything. In reality, a half dozen of the angel oak's limbs (mostly the ones toward the back of the picture) have now grown too large to support themselves, so the property managers had to add wooden supports to help hold them up.

Even the Old Ones below can be kind...

Alas, poor Venice has to put up with lots of these hideous monsters. That's the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute looking dwarfed in the background.

A Toa of water that was mutated into a fish monster, but is using it to his advantage. Probably the fastest swimmer you've ever seen.

Bad weather seems to follow us in Iceland but photographing this in bad weather was actually a good thing. There is a sense of something primordial standing there on the black sand beach. One can almost picture the times when other creatures were roaming the earth and man didn't even exist yet. A few feet from where I was standing, there was a skeleton of a giant whale. Still laying there completely intact. How appropriate!

I have been holding on to this for a couple of years. I lost track of how many times I procesed it only to scrap it and start all over again. Finally decided I am going to post this version before I change my mind again. I couldn't have asked for a better FG interest here if only the Icelandic weather had cooperated a little. But oh well, got to make lemonade with lemons sometimes. I still haven't been able to identify the animal that was once this skeleton.Just for the record, it was still very stinky and I could only get this close to it.

Travel-North says: "You hold your breath when you see him!

This raw and great monument looking at Skagen in Vardø.

You see vardo-drakkar-025the remains of a Viking ship, a dinosaur and a whale in the pose of the sky.

He guards Bussesundet and show the way so that people at sea can continue to find their way to Vardø.

In your imagination do you see he comes roaring up from the raging sea. Skim runs while he climbs up the mountain on Skagen then solidify in its awesome splendor.

The population of Vardø he presses to his breast, has made him a landmark. The name is «Drakkar».

Designed and built by young wood craftsmen from Arkhangelsk."

Leviathan is a sea monster, a demon. This snake-like creature appears in some relatively modern religions like Christianity. But it finds its origin even further back in way older age mythology.

A powerful antagonist, linked to the sea.

With this in the back of the mind, the wooden sculpture of Leviathan / Drakkar couldn't have been erected in a better place. Right by the sea, on top of an outcrop, just outside the small town of Vardø, northeast Norway.

When you go up the rock and walk into its belly, you can look out over the Barents Sea. A name that tickles my imagination all by itself, but even more so standing inside the beast.

The sculpture itself is made of small wooden planks. It looks amazing from afar, but equally impressive standing nearby. Natural materials, little pieces that make one big monster. Like a school of fish. How fitting.

I noticed the little curl from the stern is missing now. Quite a shame, it was an elegant addition. Still pretty though..
