The Deanery and Deanery Garden is a garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll, with a house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, in Sonning, Berkshire.

Deanery Garden was designed between 1899 and 1901, in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement. The garden (c. 1 hectare) was designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Although in the centre of the village next to St Andrew's Church and the Bull Inn, the house and garden are very secluded, being surrounded by high walls. However, the garden can be viewed from the church tower.

The house was built for the founder of the early lifestyle magazine Country Life, Edward Hudson, essentially as a show home. The house has subsequently been considerably extended on its north side.

The house and gardens, which are now owned by Jimmy Page, guitarist with the group Led Zeppelin.

Studio version. Another foray into funk, driven by a great groove laid down by John Paul Jones on the clavinet. A great solo from Jones too, with some tasty wah-wah guitar from Jimmy in the background. The lyrics, on face value, are about a car and that's what I used to think it was about. It's really about sex. As are a lot of Led Zeppelin songs ( and most rock'n'roll songs in general). :)

Live version from Earl's Court, 1975. Played at a faster tempo than the album version, it rocks along! Better than the studio version, I think anyway. Watch out for the inclusion of a few lines from Gallows Pole along the way.

The "Battle of Evermore" was played on a mandolin. Jimmy Page picked up John Paul Jones' mandolin and starting messing around with it and things started happening. Great lyrics about the battle of spiritual gods. Robert Plant is a big fan of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, English lore, old knights and kings stuff.
