A closer view of the ongoing cultural show in the grounds of the Phuket FantaSea. No, this is not the actual show, this is a mere filler. put on, on the Viva Bangkok stage located in the main piazza, just outside the main Fantasy of a Kingdom show of the Phuket FantaSea- photography of which is strictly prohibited. The main show is held indoors and is an extravaganza of light, color, visual effects, costumes, pyrotechnics (yes, indoors) and culture with the use of several props and even animals. This colourful show on the sidelines was very impressive as well, and I got a good vantage point from the terrace of a small cafe opposite to the stage where I have stopped in for an ice cream. Sadly, the cramped terrace with many restaurant tables, other tourists and large puddles of water thanks to a recent shower meant I had to shoot all my pictures from the same angle. A minor bit of pyrotechnics concludes this little show. A brief video of this performance appeared earlier in this album. These projects use either single color or multi color programmable lighting to create the appropriate effect for the project. In some cases, the lighting is ambient room lighting.
Our bus arrived soon enough, and we were soon off on our way to the last part of our tour for the day, to the Shangri La River Resort. Totally geared towards tourists and rather kitschy, Shangri-La Guilin is located 15 km north of Yangshuo and 50 km south of Guilin city. It is a nature park built around a small lake. The park is not particularly big and nor is the lake. However most of the buildings in the park are themed, structured primarily on the Miao and Dong minority who mostly live more north of Guilin then in this area. Once inside the park you can take a boat to cross the lake and visit a cave and a forest of peach trees. According to the legend there was a poet who called this place Shangri-La Guilin. Ours was a quick tour, so although we did do the boat tour and spot peach blossoms, the cave and peach garden were not included. (Shangri La River Resort, Yangshuo, Guilin, China, May 2017)

I requested an Indian couple to take this picture of me at another of those overly glitzy neon signs soon after you enter the Phuket Fantasea. Yes, I am in there somewhere- the neon is so bright that the backlighting makes me almost a silhouette. The Phuket FantaSea cultural theme park is located about 10 km from Patong beach in Phuket, Thailand. Phuket FantaSea cultural theme park opens daily except Thursday from 17:30 until 23:30. Dinner is served between 18:00 and 21:00 in a rather glitzy and loud buffet restaurant, but yo can opt out of dinner if you like- that's an optional extra. The Fantasy of a Kingdom theatre show starts at 21:00. One is required to enter the theatre 15 minutes before the start of the show. Entry is fairly orderly but sadly photography inside the venue is strictly prohibited and this restriction is enforced very strictly. They double check if you have checked in your mobile phone, camera or any other recording device before you enter the auditorium- despite your feeling a bit skittish about checking in your expensive iPhone or other camera phone, it's safer to check it in and get a token and see it being put into a shelf rather than have it taken away at the theatre entrance and then running around after the show trying to retrieve it. You can buy water and juices from vendors at the theatre door as you wait. Yes, the pitch for your money at every step of the show! (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
