The Glico Running Man sign is an iconic symbol of Osaka, Japan, located in the Dotonbori district. First installed in 1935, this massive neon billboard has undergone several updates to reflect the evolving times. It features a triumphant runner crossing a finish line, symbolizing health and energy, aligning with the Glico confectionery company's ethos. The vivid LED lights illuminate the figure, adding a dynamic visual to the urban landscape at night. Situated above the Dotonbori Canal, the sign is a favorite backdrop for photos, with its bright colors reflecting on the water below. The current version, updated in 2014, showcases state-of-the-art LED technology while retaining the original design's timeless appeal. The surrounding area is lined with similarly eye-catching advertisements, creating a unique visual experience that defines the neighborhood's aesthetic. The Glico sign remains a cherished part of Osaka's cultural identity, drawing visitors eager to capture its glow and significance.
On April 20, 2019, I visited Mulberry, Florida in Bone Valley, which is part of the Phosphate Mining Region of Central Florida (aka: Polk, Hillsborough, Manatee and Hardee Counties) are/were all rich in Phosphate Ore.
First, I visited the Phosphate Museum, located at the Corner of State Road 37 (aka: S. Church Ave.) and SE 1st Street, one block South of State Road 60 (Canal Street). The Mailing Address is:
101 SE 1st Street
Mulberry, FL 33860
Later I Photographed the Mulberry City Hall along State Road 37 (aka: S. Church Ave.) between SR 60 and SE 1st Street. The Mulberry City Hall Mailing Address is:
104 South Church Avenue
Mulberry, Florida 33860
These Four Photographs show the Mulberry City Hall and a Mural Painted on one side of the building. Mulberry was in the heart of the Phosphate Mining Mining Region until the depletion of Ore caused mining to move further South and East.

On March 8, 2018, I went to the Strawberry Festival to view the colorful lights and to get a large scoop your own Strawberry Short Cake at the Booth that St. Clements Roman Catholic Church Runs every year in the Stone Building near the Lost & Found Caboose.
This Photograph shows some of the Food Joints and other Vendors at the 2018 Strawberry Festival.
Apparently, Belle City Amusements is the prime Carnival Contractor and they supply most of the Rides, Games and Food Joints on the Carnival Midway. The Strawberry Festival had a vast number of Rides and Food Joints and I'm sure Bell City Subcontracted other Carnival Vendors to fill the venue; either that, or the Strawberry Festival Board itself hires other Carnival Vendors to supply Rides, Games & Food Vendors
SALE, SALE, SALE in giant white-on-red text on LED advertising billboards on the facade of the H&M Store in Times Square - NYC, at night. Pedestrians and a food cart are visible on the sidewalk in the bottom left of the photo.
The vibrant heart of Osaka’s Dotonbori district comes alive with the dazzling Glico Running Man sign, an iconic symbol of Japanese pop culture and local pride. Towering above the bustling canal, this LED-lit marvel features a victorious athlete crossing a finish line, a metaphor for perseverance and achievement that resonates with Osaka's energetic spirit. Originally installed in 1935 as a neon masterpiece, the sign has evolved alongside the city, with its current version upgraded to high-resolution LED in 2014.
Positioned alongside an array of equally captivating advertisements, the Glico sign overlooks Ebisubashi Bridge, a favorite spot for tourists and locals to snap selfies and soak in the electric atmosphere of Dotonbori. The area itself is a sensory feast, offering tantalizing street food, vibrant nightlife, and the perfect stage for Osaka's renowned humor and hospitality. The sign, a celebration of Glico's legacy as a confectionery giant, has transcended its commercial roots to become a cultural icon, drawing millions of visitors each year.
The juxtaposition of tradition and modernity makes this site uniquely Osaka. The surrounding area is steeped in history, with Dotonbori dating back to the 1600s when it flourished as a theater district. Today, it retains its dramatic flair, amplified by dazzling signage, lively crowds, and the constant hum of activity. Whether you’re marveling at the Running Man at night or enjoying a leisurely stroll along the canal, this landmark is a quintessential Osaka experience that blends nostalgia with innovation.

One of the ubiquitous Suzuki (or Daihatsu) mini songthaews (trucks with seats at the back) just outside of Phuket, Thailand's sin street Soi Bangla. I found the yellow livery of this Baht bus rather attractive- almost all the others I'd seen were coloured either fuchsia or red. There are hundreds of them all over Phuket and most locals call them tuk tuk or taxi. Elsewhere in Thailand, they are also called baht buses- they run fixed routes, charging a nominal fee for the ride (hence the name baht bus), though they do not have fixed stops unlike city buses, and can be hailed by putting your hand out on the street. The waiting driver (sitting on the passenger seat- Thailand is right hand drive) gives me an amused look, probably wondering what this crazy Indian tourist is doing taking a picture something as mundane as his car when the girlie sin street Soi Bangla is right across the street! Times Square, NYC
by navema
Times Square is a major intersection in Manhattan, a borough of New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The Times Square area consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.
Times Square, nicknamed "The Crossroads of the World," has achieved the status of an iconic world landmark and has become a symbol of New York City. Times Square is principally defined by its spectaculars, animated, digital advertisements.
HISTORY:
Before and after the American Revolution, the area belonged to John Morin Scott, a general of the New York militia where he served under George Washington. Scott's Manor House was at what is now 43rd Street, surrounded by countryside used for farming and breeding horses. In the first half of the 19th century it became one of the prized possessions of John Jacob Astor, who made a second fortune selling off lots to hotels and other real estate concerns as the city rapidly spread uptown.
In 1904, New York Times publisher Adolph S. Ochs moved the newspaper's operations to a new skyscraper on 42nd Street at Longacre Square. Ochs persuaded Mayor George B. McClellan, Jr. to construct a subway station there, and the area was renamed "Times Square" on April 8, 1904. Just three weeks later, the first electrified advertisement appeared on the side of a bank at the corner of 46th Street and Broadway.
The New York Times, according to Nolan, moved to more spacious offices across Broadway in 1913. The old Times Building was later named the Allied Chemical Building. Now known simply as One Times Square, it is famed for the Times Square Ball drop on its roof every New Year's Eve.
Also in 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association, headed by entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher, chose the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, at the southeast corner of Times Square, to be the Eastern Terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States, which originally spanned 3,389 miles coast-to-coast through 13 states to its Western Terminus in Lincoln Park in San Francisco, California.
As the growth in New York City continued, Times Square quickly became a cultural hub full of theaters, music halls, and upscale hotels. Celebrities such as Irving Berlin, Fred Astaire, and Charlie Chaplin were closely associated with Times Square in the 1910s and 1920s. During this period, the area was nicknamed The Tenderloin because it was supposedly the most desirable location in Manhattan. However, it was during this period that the area was besieged by crime and corruption, in the form of gambling and prostitution.
The general atmosphere changed with the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s. Times Square acquired a reputation as a dangerous neighborhood in the following decades. From the 1960s to the early 1990s, the seediness of the area, especially due its go-go bars, sex shops, and adult theaters, became an infamous symbol of the city's decline.
In the 1980s, a commercial building boom began in the western parts of the Midtown as part of a long-term development plan developed under Mayor Ed Koch and David Dinkins. In the mid-1990s, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani (1994–2002) led an effort to "clean up" the area, increasing security, closing pornographic theaters, pressuring drug dealers and "squeegee men" to relocate, and opening more tourist-friendly attractions and upscale establishments. Advocates of the remodeling claim that the neighborhood is safer and cleaner. Detractors, on the other hand, argue that the changes have homogenized or "Disneyfied" the character of Times Square and have unfairly targeted lower-income New Yorkers from nearby neighborhoods such as Hell's Kitchen.
In 1990, the state of New York took possession of six of the nine historic theatres on 42nd Street, and the New 42nd Street non-profit organization was appointed to oversee their restoration and maintenance. The theatres underwent renovation for Broadway shows, conversion for commercial purposes, or demolition.
The theaters of Broadway and the huge number of animated neon and LED signs have long made them one of New York's iconic images, and a symbol of the intensely urban aspects of Manhattan. Times Square is the only neighborhood with zoning ordinances requiring building owners to display illuminated signs. The density of illuminated signs in Times Square now rivals that of Las Vegas. Officially, signs in Times Square are called "spectaculars", and the largest of them are called "jumbotrons."
Times Square now boasts attractions such as ABC's Times Square Studios, where Good Morning America is broadcast live, an elaborate Toys "Я" Us store, and competing Hershey's and M&M's stores across the street from each other, as well as restaurants such as Ruby Foo's, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Planet Hollywood Restaurant and Bar and Carmine's, along with a number of multiplex movie theaters. It has also attracted a number of large financial, publishing, and media firms to set up headquarters in the area. A larger presence of police has improved the safety of the area.
On February 26, 2009, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that traffic lanes along Broadway from 42nd Street to 47th Street would be de-mapped starting Memorial Day 2009 and transformed into pedestrian plazas until at least the end of the year as a trial. The same was done from 33rd to 35th Street. The goal is to ease traffic congestion throughout the Midtown grid.
Times Square is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop. On December 31, 1907, a ball signifying New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square, and the Square has held the main New Year's celebration in New York City ever since.
By day, Soi Bangla is like any other commercial street in any big city. The gentleman with the trolley in the foreground is hauling bottles of water and cartons full of beer and stuff- probably for one of the bars- while across the street a food vendor serves a couple of customers while baht buses wait for customer, neatly lined up. I am in Phuket, Thailand, on Soi Bangla, which is naughty boy central. By night the street takes on a completely different vibe as creatures of the night sexpats and the oggling crowds are out in force, along with touts, pimps, drug pushers and other assorted low lifes. Notes about Soi Bangla appeared earlier in this album. In generall avoid visiting these areas even by day, let alone at night, as these activities frankly scare me. But thanks to parking restrictions on this street, my driver guide has dropped me off here to take a couple of pictures while he drives round the block to come and pick me up again. Upon repeated assurances about the safety of this street in Phuket, as opposed to the more in your face streets in Phuket full of scumbags and other forms of low life, I did return to this street later in the night to do a spot of night photography. All with my iPhone of course- I did not dare to bring my dSLR here. It was quite vibrant and colourful by night, and I did not feel in danger even one bit. Night views of Soi Bangla appear later in this album. (see subsequent pictures). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
These two soliciting girls promoting a ping pong show and a sex show turn their face as I point my iPhone towards them. People in bar areas generally do not like to be photographed, as these photos appear on YouTube and on social media ever so often from some indiscreet or unscrupulous bloggers. Some people can even get aggressive and react unfavourably the moment you pull out a camera, though cellphone cameras are increasingly beginning to be tolerated of late, even in absolute fleshpots like Nana Plaza in Bangkok. Ping Pong show- now how cliche is that? These goofy and repulsive shows have no takers any more, barring first timers who visit these areas with open mouth. But this whole ping pong show and live sex show thing has been battered to death several times over now. Thailand's (in)famous ping pong show is a form of stage entertainment that takes place in strip clubs. It is an unusual type of a show in which you will see women wearing only bras, lying on their backs and using their pelvic muscles to either blow, eject, or hold objects like ping pong balls or even razors from their vaginal cavity. Ouch! I find the whole idea obnoxious and nauseating to say the very least. And no, I am no prude, but some things just repulse me. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
The atmosphere and vibe of Soi Bangla were totally different at night! (see previous pictures earlier in this album for a few daytime photos). I never indulge in the nightlife and and actually quite apprehensive of venturing along to these bar areas. But my elderly hotel owner (who it turned out was an ex bar girl) and the manager and staff of an Indian restaurant nearby assured me that this is not Bangkok and it's perfectly safe here as long as I watch my back or not get drunk. That encouraged me to venture into this street all alone. This is the entrance arch to Soi Bangla. I had safely left my large dSLR back in the hotel and was carrying only my iPhone. Based in the heart of Patong Beach, Soi Bangla or the Bangla road is considered the prime attraction for aficionados of Phuket Nightlife. As the sun sets on the beautiful Andaman Sea, the beach with its exuberant nightlife comes alive. The happening Bangla Road closes to traffic and becomes a pedestrians only walking street. Many tourists crowd the street to visit the line up restaurants and bars on both sides of the street and to enjoy a lavish evening. A soi in Thai means lane, but here Soi Bangla or Bangla Street/ Lane also includes the narrow by- lanes which branch off from the main Bangla Road. There are a large number of bars and nightclubs on Soi Bangla itself, and if the dubious reputation of Bangkok and Pattaya's night life areas are any indication, it's probably safest to avoid the bars in the side lanes of Soi Bangla as well. The colour and confusion, the vibrant atmosphere, the sheer ambience and loud, thumping music coming from the bars as well as exotic food stalls nearby guarantee an interesting atmosphere. Not to mention the girlie bars and those fake dance moves and free flowing alcohol- if you are into that king of thing. (nudge nudge, wink wink!). Frankly I've never visited one of these girlie bars before (regular bars yes but girlie bars no- these places frankly scare me), so I am here only to enjoy the colour and vibrant atmosphere and to hopefully bag a few interesting night photos. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
A brief video of the dazzling stage show on the piazza outside the Phuket FantaSea show theatre in Phuket, Thailand. I had just watched a mini parade advertising this show, and have come onto the terrace of a little cafeteria to enjoy an ice cream. The terrace was wet and full of puddles, thanks to a recent rain shower. But just as I was finishing my ice cream, a bit of a commotion and the sound of music made me get up and stand at the balcony (yes, in a puddle of water, but you can stand in a puddle right?) only to notice this rather colourful dance. Of course, this is just a colourful dance on the side, on the Viva Bangkok stage- the main Fantasy of a Kingdom show in the Phuket FantaSea is something totally different, something I have spoken about in some detail earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (my Facebook viewers will find this video in a separate Videos folder under my profile). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
There was a handful of guys holding out these Sexy Lady Show placards and pointing towards one of the side lanes of Soi Bangla in Phuket, Thailand. And while most of the promo guys refused, one of them was kind enough to let me photograph the banner he was carrying. As I finished and was walking away, another chap thrust a similar poster into my face and pointed to a lane, groping me, andcaressing my shoulder and back in the process. Needless to say I made tracks pretty hastily out of there, my bursting tummy notwithstanding- I'd just had dinner before coming here. The side street location and the bold lady drinks declaration should be red flags enough to never set foot in these dodgy places. I have never indulged in girlie bars even in my prime, and now at sixty plus thanks but no thanks! I do read a lot about the nightlife on the web, just out of interest and curiosity. I've read repeatedly that these touts do not work for bars and that one should NEVER follow a tout in the street with his little card of whatever he says you will see in the show! It’s often not real, and you will be charged extra, with many fictitious biils added to your tab and nasty bouncers blocking your way if you don't pay. The bars on the main Soi Bangla street are easy to find- they are in fact hard to miss- so if at all you are inclined, it's better to find your own way into them. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Remember the picture of Tiger Nightclub by day which you saw earlier in this album? (see previous pictures). The atmosphere and vibe of Tiger is totally different by night with much dazzling neon and lighting. I am on Phuket’s sin street Soi Bangla and have ventured here alone at night on assurances from my hotel staff and the crew of an Indian restaurant nearby that this is Phuket, and totally safe, unlike the more hardcore bare areas of Bangkok and Pattaya. The Tiger Night Club (pictured here) was surprisingly relatively empty for all the dazzle dazzle it has put out. The Tiger Nightclub on Bangla Road is an imposing complex covering some 5,000 sq mtr across 3 floors. The building has a stone-like cement décor, with large concrete tigers overlooking the street from the 2nd floor. The ground floor is packed with beer bars, while the upper levels have a nightclub where parties go on into the wee hours. Thanks to my general apprehension about bar districts, and having read scores of horror stories about them, I did not enter this complex either. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Sour faced Katoyes (ladyboys) soliciting customers for a massage parlour on Soi Bangla- sin street- in Phuket, Thailand. They were all stone faced and looking rather grumpy, so wonder who would visit their shop- but two of them were soliciting particularly virulently out on the street. This photo is a bit blurred as I am nervous already, as my driver guide has dropped me off here while he drove round the block to come pick me up again, as parking on this street is not allowed. So I was alone, on foot, and within touching distance of these sourpuss katoeys. And although I was not carrying my large dSLR, and was taking pictures with only my iPhone, I was not sure how these chaps would react, as people in bar areas are generally averse to people taking pictures of them, and katoeys or ladyboys are known to rough up people and play rough. I therefore took the briefest of shots- one of the katoeys is looking at me already- and quickly put my camera away, for had he/ she decided to play rough, So all that apprehension and nervousness resulted in a badly shaken and blurred photograph- sorry about that. I would have been in a pretty bad situation had one of this duo had decided to play rough. Patong in Phuket is full of massage places like this. And with the low season, these girls keep calling out to you due to lack of customers. This is Patong so other special services can usually (though not necessarily always) be availed of during the course of the massage. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

A garish bar with's all it's bright neon viewed from a distance on Soi Bangla in Phuket- the nightlife district of the island. It was surprisingly relatively quiet on Soi Bangla even at 20:30- all the action probably starts off much later. Phuket's Bangla Road really comes to life after sunset, when the road is closed to traffic and becomes a 400-metre festival of neon lights, loud music and cheap beer. Jam packed most nights of the year (it wasn't at this time as I just mentioned), Soi Bangla is considered quite a friendly and lively place to walk around, unlike the bar areas of Bangkok and Pattaya which are more hardcore and have scores of scumbags and low lifes hanging bout- undesirables like drug pushers, aggressive pimps and freelancers etc. I have never indulged in girlie bars- these places frankly scare me, but I have ventured here only after repeated assurances from my hotel staff and a nearly Indian restaurant that this is Phuket and it's very safe here, as long as I am sensible. With dozens of bars and clubs competing with each other for customers, one could probably conclude that it's beer bars which occupy most of the street's length, with several go-go bars and a few pubs, restaurants, discos and shops rounding out the attractions, both on Soi Bangla and down its side streets. I generally wouldn't venture into any of the side streets as a safety precaution, but would probably have ventured onto the first floor drinking counter overlooking the street as I'd seen on someone's blog. But that would have meant entering a bar alone and asking around, something I was not inclined to do. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
A bar in action across the street- surprisingly devoid of girls. Bars are generally very skittish about photography, and often react unfavourably if they spot anyone taking pictures.Hence, using the 2x zoom feature of my iPhone 7 plus, I dared to point it inside one of the bars from across the street. Later on, while reviewing this picture, I spotted this Chinese lady talking pictures in selfie mode from right outside the bar! How I wish I had done that as well- though if I had gone there as well, then two photographers would have attracted attention. I am on Soi Bangla, the bar district of Phuket, Thailand, and have come here after repeated assurances that this place is very safe, at least in comparison to the more hardcore bar areas of Bangkok and Pattaya. Notes about Soi Bangla appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Another look into one of the side alleys on Phuket's sin street Soi Bangla. All in all, Phuket's sin street appeared a lot more tame than those in Bangkok and Pattaya which are more hard core. And while it is generally safest not to enter any bar in one of the side streets or back alleys, here in Phuket these appeared a lot more tame as well, though I did not even try to go there. In fact many of the side alleys on Soi Bangla appeared to be beer bars sans girls with open plan seating or complete food streets like this one right here. One of the street food stall ladies is seen here making a point with a customer- her placard seems to advertise mostly tea and coffee though. I did not attempt to enter this stall- however vibrant and colourful it may have been as it was pretty crowded and I'd already had a heavy Indian meal close to Soi Bangla, feasting on okra curry to die for. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
I later dared to return to Soi Bangla alone at night after being reassured by the manageress of my hotel and the manager and wait staff of an Indian restaurant nearby (where I'd just had fantastic fried okra curry to die for) that this is not Bangkok and it is fairly safe. So cautiously taking out my iPhone (I safely left my large dSLR back at the hotel), I took my first photograph here of guys offering beer on the cheap. I did find beer in most places only a little more than half of which you pay on Bangkok. Of course cheap beer is only a ruse to get you into the bar for once inside, girls turn up and pester you for overpriced lady drinks etc. Frankly these activities were never my thing, even in my prime, and now that I am past sixty, thanks but no thanks. Here in my hotel beer is a mere Thb 60 but the extra 29 Baht is probably to cover bar expenses etc, so fair enough. If you are not stung by the bar to order more and more beers and those lady drinks of course. Soi Bangla is now mostly known as Bangla Walking Street or even Thanon Bangla, and for many decades has been the notorious heart of all Phuket Nightlife. I'd been cautioned by articles online that the battle for night supremacy rages on every single night between beer bars, live music bars, rooftop bars, night clubs and, of course, those famous go-go bars! Things appeared to be fairly quiet at this time (20:30)- the scumbags and other low lifes like drug pushers, pushy pimps etc. probably turn up much later. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Bold and vibrant electronic signage in Manhattan's Times Square in New York. Visible are advertisements for Coca-Cola, Hyundai, Beautiful - The Carol King Musical, Jockey, SAS Choes, The Phantom of the Opera, PRETTY WOMAN the Musical, McDonalds, Hershey's Chocolates, Spongebob Squarepants, Brooklyn Girl, Covergirl, and The Lion King Musical. The statue of George M. Cohan, an American entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer and producer, towers above the crowd. It takes all types! I am generally apprehensive of visiting bar areas alone, in fact not visiting them at all for several reasons. One, I am not really into this kind of thing, two, my diabetic condition does not allow me to indulge even if I did try and thirdly I love to take pictures and cameras and bar areas are a big no no. Not to mention dodgy characters- some of them true scumbags, and the never ending emptying of your pockets by mercenary bar girls! I finally managed to persuade my driver guide to drive me to Soi Bangla in Phuket during the half day tour, by applying to my tour company for this, so that I could take some pictures and jump back into the cab and be gone in a jiffy. The cab driver was not too happy about it as stopping on this street is not allowed (vehicles are totally banned on this street after sundown, hence the name 'walking street') so he left me to my own devices (yikes!) while he did a round and came back to collect me. I literally begged him to hold on just a cotton' pickin' minute and take an 'I was there' shot on sin street. He agreed with great reluctance when this gentleman barged in. He put his arm around me and said, ok go ahead, much to my driver's amusement. Jolly chap he was, though he was reeking of alcohol, but a couple of pictures and we went on his way. Phew! So much for living for thrills- visiting bar street on my own! (Phuket, Thailand, Oct. 2019)
Sit-down bars on a side street off Soi Bangla This narrow alley off Soi Bangla in Phuket was full of bars and appeared to be fairly well subscribed. The golden rule for Bangkok generally seems to be stay away from bars on side streets and on upper floors. Seems ok here in Phuket though- with everything out in the open and in full view, and with such open plan seating, it might have been rather safe and an interesting place to enjoy a couple of beers and do a spot of people watching. I did not indulge though, thanks to my general apprehension towards bars especially after reading scores of horror stories about the more hardcore bar ares of Bangkok and Pattaya. Here in Phuket it would probably have been safe and ok, especially with this kind of open plan seating, and it could be interesting to talk to the girls, but I did not indulge. I'm no prude, but somehow bar areas do not excite me- the prospect of interesting night photography notwithstanding. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Loud and garish- typical bar signage of one of the bars on Phuket's sin street Soi Bangla. Dazzling neon (and loud music which you cannot hear unfortunately) are standard features of the bars on Soi Bangla in Phuket, Thailand. You mostly walk past a large number of beer bars lining the street on both sides, almost all of which have an open facade. This in itself probably makes Phuket's Soi Bangla much safer than the bar areas in Bangkok and Pattaya, which are decidedly more hardcore. Every bar here on Soi Bangla have ladies whose mission is to convince you to step in and order a drink- and supposedly nothing more- another big difference from the sometimes aggressive and pushy ladies of Pattaya and Bangkok. These promo ladies usually stand in front of the bar, showing a menu with the price for the drinks. If you look closely, probably even peering into the bars, you may observe some ladies dancing on counters, and some demonstrate jaw-dropping pole and acrobatic dancing skills. Had I known this before I entered Soi Bangla with the greatest of trepidation, thanks to what all I'd read online about mercenary bargirls in Pattaya and Bangkok, some also discriminating against Indians, I might have actually entered one of these bars for a drink. I didn't, sadly. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

With no intention of indulging in Phuket's night life, or even having a drink in one of the bars- cheap beer is available in my hotel in a much safer and hassle free environment anyway- my time on Soi Bangla was practically over. I am here only for the night photography and I decided to leave after a few more shots. One of the ladies of the night who was eating slices of watermelon did offer me a piece but I declined and moved on, for god knows what she had in mind! It's generally not safe to enter side lanes and by lanes in bar areas in Bangkok and Pattaya, which tend to be more hardcore- Phuket is decidedly better and safer. However on Soi Bangla, I found most of the side streets filled with small beer counters and restaurants. Here is a super crowded alley off the sin street Soi Bangla for street food. I wonder what that Shooting Range sign is doing in the far distance though. I didn't venture inside the alley. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
My second visit to Phuket, Thailand's sin street Soi Bangla in a single day had turned out well. My first visit was earlier in the day, in my tourist van. My second visit here was later in the evening, alone, on foot, and I had emerged from Soi Bangla in one piece, and not ripped off or taken to the cleaners- mostly because I'd kept a distance, taking only a few pictures, and had not indulged in the bar scene in any way at al. Somehow, bar areas do not excite me, especially after reading scores of horror stories about the more hardcore bar districts of Bangkok and Pattaya. It could have been safe here, but then, why take a risk? So as I emerge from Soi Bangla and make my way back to my hotel, it's business as usual for this hard working food vendor just outside the street. She is probably done for the day as well and is possibly on her way home- unless she is moving in to set up shop, knowing the late hours bar districts work to! (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
The massage ladies are relatively less active by day! I was nonplussed and frankly quite apprehensive when my driver guide dropped me off on Soi Bangla- sin street in Phuket, Thailand to take pictures while he drove once around the block as parking or stopping is not allowed on the street even by day. By night the street is completely closed to traffic and is pedestrian only. I was frankly quite apprehensive as I had been dropped off and left to my own devices on sin street, armed with only my wits and my iPhone. (I had wisely left my dSLR in the car). Frankly, being daylight, and this being Phuket and not Bangkok or Pattaya and hence not so much in your face, no one really bothered me. Being an Indian- a non white- was probably a big advantage as well. Soi Bangla or sin street or Phuket's fleshpot is now mostly known as Bangla Walking Street or even Thanon Bangla. It has for many decades has been the notorious heart of all of Phuket's Nightlife. The battle for night supremacy still rages every single night though (by day it's reasonable safe) between beer bars, live music bars, rooftop bars, night clubs and, of course, those famous go-go bars! (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
I wouldn't generally venture to these alone areas at night - I did here though, much later, upon recommendations from my hotel staff and an Indian restaurant I visited later for dinner. So when my driver guide dropped me off here to take a drive around the block, I was at my wit's end to be left alone here all by myself. When he returned a few minutes later, I managed to coax him to take a selfie of me abainst the Soi Bangla street entrance arch. Phuket’s egregious Soi Bangla is the local equivalent to Bangkok’s Soi Nana or Patpong or Pattaya Walking street, though not quite as aggressive and in your face. I never have the courage to visit these parts alone so I coaxed my travel company to ask the car driver a couple of minutes on the street to take a few pictures. The street is decidedly more colorful by night and on assurances from many people that this is not Bangkok, I did venture there by night as well, taking a few shots and spending ten minutes there. (see subsequent pictures later in this album). (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
A friendly bar hopper surprises me by posing with me for a selfie. Totally unexpected and out of the blue- but it was nice! I am generally apprehensive of visiting bar areas alone at night, but on my half day Phuket tour, by day, I managed to have my tour company ask the driver to stop here on Soi Bangla for a couple of shots. Soi Bangla is Phuket's Sin street, best avoid if you are not into this kind of thing. And although he was not happy about it, my driver guide stopped reluctantly for a few seconds as parking here is not allowed. He has already driven once around the block after dropping me here to take pictures all alone (yikes!) and has come around to pick me up, when I begged him to take a selfie of me. As he was rather reluctantly taking my picture, this European gentleman suddenly barged in- he put his hand around my shoulder with a laugh and told my guide, ok go ahead. Yes, I was taken aback and his breath was smelling of alcohol but I at least got an offbeat and interesting shot!! Jolly old chap though- he made for something different- an off beat shot for a change. Soi Bangla is naughty boy central in Phuket. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
The next few pictures are scenes from inside and outside several of the facilities on the piazza outside the main theatre of the Phuket FantaSea in Phuket, Thailand This shot is from Inside one of the overpriced boutique stores in the grounds of the Phuket Fantasea. I loved the decor, and the mood lighting. Aoart from beachwear and a few ladies' garments, there was an assortment of t-shirts in pastel fuchsia, sky blue and turquoise. I was tempted to pick up one as the quality was good, if not the price, but they did not have anything with collar. Notes about the Phuket FantaSea show 'Fantasy of a Kingdom' appeared earlier in this album. (see previous pictures).(Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

My driver guide turned up eventually, and after taking a few reluctant shots of me on Soi Bangla- the red light street in Phuket, Thailand, grumbling all the time about parking restrictions and his getting a fine or a ticket, we were eventually back on the road. This was my last stop on the Phuket day tour and my hotel was just minutes away. I was happy I had got out pretty unscathed after having hung about the fleshpot district armed with my iPhone and taking pictures- albeit cautiously. I was destined to return later on my own, and on foot, to take some colourful night photos- we will get to those later in this album. (see subsequent pictures). As we drive along, back to my hotel, I passed this row of watering holes. This alley is almost an extension of Soi Bangla- there is a busy street in between- and these are only beer bars- no girls or shady scumbags about- I hope. I did not explore as it was time up already and my guide was keen to drop me off and be on his way, back to his own home. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
I later dared to return to Soi Bangla alone at night after being reassured that this is not Bangkok and it is fairly safe. This was to be my last bit foreign trip post retirement- I had just two weeks to return to India for good after returning to Dubai post my four days in Phuket. And apprehensive though as I was about being hassled on Phuket's fleshpot street of Soi Bangla, I really didn't want to miss out and have any regrets. Of course I do not indulge in the nightlife- I am too old for that- but I am talking in terms of night photography only. Safely leaving my large dSLR back at the hotel and armed with only my iPhone, I returned to Soi Bangla later at night. The vibe, colour and atmosphere was totally different by night. On my way to Soi Bangla,I passed this rather colourful restaurant at the end of the street where my hotel was located. Yes, this is only a restaurant, not a bar. I did not visit it as I found a nice Indian restaurant just off Soi Bangla which served a beautiful okra curry which was to die for! (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)

Just as I was aiming at some girls soliciting outside a massage parlour just outside Soi Bangla in Phuket, Thailand, this baht bus suddenly came in the way. The photo of the massage girls turned out blurred anyway so I decided to retain this picture of a baht bus. These little songthaews- mostly fuchsia or red, but some yellow like this one here- are basically like a city bus. As all songthaews are, all around SE Asia, these are basically small pick up trucks with longitudinal seats fitted on the back. (a very small number have bus like seating as well but longitudinal seats are most common). They run fixed routes, and people hop on and hop off as they please- there are no fixed bus stops along the route, people can flag them down as they drive past. Fares are fixed, usually a baht a ride, hence the name baht bus, and people pay the driver directly while getting off. These baht buses are very popular in Phuket and in other parts of Thailand. They run on very limited routes though- meaning you can find them running long distances like from one end of the island to the other. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
This Walgreens opened up in late 2006-early 2007 on the corner of Mathistown Rd and Center St in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey near Mystic Islands. An old woman got in a car crash recently because she was distracted by the LED sign.
A fat shot of another of the bars on Phuket, Thailand's sin street Soi Bangla. Some weird decor there- human skull flyers! I have never indulged in bar life, as I am pretty wary of them, having ready too many horror stories about them that I could shake a stick at. I am here all alone by myself only after repeated assurances from my hotel staff and the crew of a nearby Indian restaurant where I'd had my dinner earlier that this is Phuket and it's very safe here. Upon reflection, this kind of open plan seating and relatively open bar interior would have probably made for a good place to enjoy a couple of beers and do some people watching, with a live band adding to the entertainment value. However, I did not indulge- I never have- and I moved on after this quick shot. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Don't you simply love that sparkle from the Phuket FantaSia theatre! (my Facebook viewers will find this video in a separate VIdeos folder under my profile). Indeed, everything about the Phuket FantaSea is all about glitz, glamour, sparkle and razzmatazz, including the very impressive Fantasy of a Kingdom show which is held in the theatre. The theatre is equipped with a professional sound and light system and modern technology to create special effects. Taking photos or recording videos is not allowed in the theatre. This rule is very strictly enforced, and sadly, mobile phones, cameras and video recorders have be deposited before entering the theater and collected after the show. They do give a rather unapologetic reason once you as seated as to why they prohibit photography, and after watching the show, I think this is just as well. This is a total U turn from what I generally say, that any place which prohibits photography does not interest me and I will not even go in. But here, they use special lighting effects, live animals including seven large elephants at one stage, and pyrotechnics (yes, indoors) and one of the acts involves a pitch dark theatre with acrobats doing their tricks way up against the high ceiling, with subtle light only lighting up their neon green outfits- all that would be killed if people start photographing these left right and centre. This is the entrance Soi Bangla- Phuket's version of Sin Street. Soi Bangla is the bar district of Phuket. I am generally afraid of entering bar areas alone at night, and have not had any success getting my guides to accompany me there by day, even for a quick ten minutes photo shoot. Although not part of my half day Phuket tour, I begged my driver guide to bring me here, albeit very briefly, promising him a generous tip. As always, parking was a problem, so he agreed to drop me off on the bar street (all alone? Yikes!) while he drove once around the block and came to pick me up again. The Patong district is arguably one of the most sleazy places in Phuket. It is where much of the sex tourism in Phuket takes place. In other words, it's a red light district. Apart from sex workers, Patong also has more than its fair share of obnoxious drunk people, gross sex shows, taxi mafias, and drugs. I took a few quick shots here by day as you will see as we go along, but on being assured by my hotel people and an Indian restaurant where I had my dinner, also returned later for a few night shots. armed only with my iPhone, as carrying a large dSLR here would have spelt instant disaster. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
Baht buses can run right into Soi Bangla by day and here are a couple of them waiting for customers outside a bar complex. Baht buses are those pink songthaews (pickup trucks with seats at the back) which operate as local buses. I was dragged into the Patpong bar district in Bangkok by an unscrupulous tuktuk driver back in 2008- first first solo trip so I was still a bit of a solo travel virgin- where he had taken me around several dodgy streets and side streets, each looking more dubious than the other. Here on Soi Bangla in Phuket however, I found that the side streets appeared to have a large shed over them- some, not all- with bars on either side. So with this kind of crowd, I guess it must be safer than the dodgy fleshpots of Patpong and Nana Plaza in Bangkok. Of course, I am no prude, but I do not indulge in these activities so I did not care to investigate further. (Phuket, Thailand, Oct/ Nov. 2019)
