ONT 2103 leads train 214 out of Englehart and over the Englehart River on their way to North Bay.

I must say standing out on the highway bridge for this photo was one of the sketchier things I have done...the bridge was really bouncing and I was knocking concrete off the guard rail with my hands!

Also admittedly not my best work...shot as JPEG so I think I kind of salvaged it.

NS 9176 leads train 12T across the Portage Bridge in Letchworth State Park on 3/28/2015. The tree's have been cut and the view on the South side of the bridge is now open, but only until June 1, when this part of the park will be closed to the public. NS will then begin construction of the new replacement bridge. After the new bridge is complete, then, according to one of the Parks Employees, this bridge will be torn down.

Colas 37175 leads 3M05 10:52 Dollands Moor - Derby R.T.C. past Ayres End in an unexpected bit of sunshine.

On a more sombre note, this location has partially succumbed to palisade fencing (at least it's green) and will probably be completed by this time next week. That's all locations in the environs of Luton & Harpenden gone now.

Abolitionist John Brown leads a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in an attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery.

On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and his band overran the federal arsenal. Some of his men rounded up a handful of hostages, including a few slaves. Word of the raid spread and by the following day Brown and his men were surrounded. On October 18, a company of U.S. Marines, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee (1808-70) and Lieutenant J. E. B. Stuart (1833-64), overran Brown and his followers. Brown was wounded and captured, while 10 of his men were killed, including two of his sons. www.history.com/topics/harpers-ferry

No special effects here, the sun had everything lit up! Looks to be buds on the trees already!

Enjoy the brand new week!!

this path leads to underneath a very, very old beech tree at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum.... it is so magical being 'inside' the heart of this tree and we always enjoy entering... but this day it was closed.... maybe due to weak branches...

Happy Fence Friday and I wish you all a great weekend!

CSX 3458 leads Q574 over the elevated tracks at CT Junction, crossing through the maze of supports that hold up I-75 near downtown Cincinnati. This section of Cincinnati was a beehive of railroad and industrial activity during the Golden Age of railroading. B&O, C&O, L&N, NYC, and SOU to name a few all used this area to stage coaches for their famous passenger trains. B&O's St.Louis to Pittsburgh mainline passed through here, hence the B&O warehouse that still survives to this day. Today, the warehouse, now called Longworth Hall, is mainly a parking lot, and the tenants are a mix of local firms, indie businesses and one of the more famous clubs in downtown, Energy Nightclub.

Power car 43320 leads an unidentified London-bound National Express East Coast working past Langford (south of Biggleswade).

National Express operated the Inter-City East Coast franchise for less than two years, taking over from Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) on 9th December 2007; GNER had been stripped of the franchise as a result of it having filed for bankruptcy. However, the National Express Group had got its sums wrong, and asked for the financial arrangements to be renegotiated - but the end result was the franchise being taken back into direct government ownership, with NXEC ending operations on 13th November 2009. Despite this, the new National Express livery was applied to many HST sets (during a refurbishment started under GNER), although only one class 91 loco and no mark 4 coaches.

One roads leads to two and suddenly there is a junction for traffic and the scope for decision, revision and division til contemplation arrives at cognition and transmigration induced by transmutation, we can somewhat transmogrified continue our transportation.

The metamorphosis that awaits at the cross roads, or the junction of ways gives us a chance to look at the roads not chosen as different fates, or potential we have the chance to transmogrify into the pupa and to transfigure through the imago and transmute into the butterfly that flutters down the right road, or the best road, or the only road beating our wind evoking wings as we proceed and progress in due procession to our ultimate goal.

The Chthonic Hekate is underwhelmed in the underworld by the sparkle of the above and the dark intentions from below that make some of the sparkle. She knows the outcome of each of the ways ways available to us. She might like to be acknowledged, but that does not mean that she will share her knowledge, unfortunately she is happy to leave us in self-knowledge that is mis-knowledge. The Triple Form of Hekate is full within the three phases and yet there is also a Forth Form. Her light in the darkness includes sparking, lighting, spluttering and also none igniting. Her symbol of three Moon in reflected illumination is also a symbol brightly obscuring her other form within the Dark, or New Moon. She is happy in the dark with her unilluminated vision and her brightness in the Full Moon also knows the New Moon visible on the horizon for just a few moments. Called for and sought at the Trivia Three Ways and crossroads also asked for and answered within the home where all junctions are started and ended and where insight and protection are often most required. From the ignition of Fresh Flame to Full Light through Dying Embers and within Extinguished Ashes she is never absent always available if you call on her without subconscious desire, rather with intent to take her hand with resolve to lead you on towards where you aspire.

37424 leads 3S01 09:18 Stowmarket D.G.L. to Stowmarket D.G.L. into Great Yarmouth with 37218 on the rear, 30/10/21.

Having been full dull and heavy rain all morning the cloud suddenly cleared lunchtime. So I made the diversion to Great Yarmouth on my way into work as Saturday is the only day that you're able to grab a shot of 3S01 in platform 2. It's booked platform 4 Monday to Friday and platform 3 on a Sunday.

Landore allocated 47134 leads the 10:00 Swansea - Cardiff parcels train past Cardiff Canton, 15th April 1978. The train is an interesting mix of vehicles and is formed of three Great Western Railway Siphon G’s, a Mark I BSO passenger coach, A London Midland and Scottish Railway full brake, a Mark I full brake, a further London Midland and Scottish Railway full brake and finally a British Railways Covered Carriage Truck (CCT).

Locomotive History

47134 was built by Brush at the Falcon works, Loughborough as D1726 and delivered in April 1964 allocated to Cardiff Canton MPD. On the 20th September 1966 it was damaged when it derailed on a curve at Chipping Sodbury due to excessive speed. Following repair it was allocated to the London Midland Region (Birmingham Division) until returning to the Western Region (Bristol) in January 1972. In October 1974 it transferred to Landore where it would stay for nine years until transferred to Bristol in April 1983. It transferred to Cardiff in February 1984 and shortly afterwards it entered Crewe Works to be fitted with electric train heating and emerged in October 1984 as 47622 and was allocated to Old Oak Common. It spent five years as 47622 being also allocated to Cardiff, Eastfield and Crewe before it was fitted with long range fuel tanks, renumbered 47841 in January 1990. It is currently undergoing overhaul at Eastleigh.

CSX 7535 leads train Q216 down the ramp at West Pittsburg, PA on October 28, 1992. The CPL signal bridge spans the double track ramp and the P&W Sub. I just passed through this area a few days ago and it is amazing how grown in the area has become, especially at the Route 168 bridge which was once a great place to take pictures from. Of course this signal bridge is long gone too.

NS 2572 leads 5 other GE locomotives on a manifest through the Pennsy Position Lights at Portage, PA.

UP 6222 leads the ICBOA past West Truckee. As seen the SP tri-lights are on borrowed time.

Santa Fe 567 leads a freight (maybe Conrail's ELSF) by Calumet tower in East Chicago, Indiana. The train has just crossed the former B&O and is currently on IHB rails. By now this Warbonnet was getting to look quite rag-tag. Shot with a Canon F-1 on Kodachrome 25.

Just a few days before the demolition.

335052 leads 33052 past Pluckley on the 22/05/93. The train was carrying loaded spoil from another site of works on the Ashford - Hastings line which was closed all weekend. We were aware of trains at the site and that they would return to Tonbridge Yard and so just sat it out for there arrival. Another train followed an hour later also with a pair of 33's.

47614 leads the Branch Line Society's 1Z50 09.45 Crewe to Bidston "The Wirral Squirrel" through Ince & Elton on 3rd October 2021. The rear loco was 40013.

The line sees few loco hauled passenger trains and a number of people had turned out at the quiet shack to witness the event.

The loco was originally D1733 and was the one chosen by BR for the experimental "XP64" livery in 1964. It was subsequently renumbered to 47141 and then 47614.

DB stickered 66002 leads 'Royal' 67005 'Queens Messenger' through Weaver Junction on the 6K74 14:09 Warrington Arpley - Crewe EMD transfer. The wagons in tow are most likely off repair at Arpley and heading to Crewe for tyre turning prior to re-entering traffic. 67005 was returning from Scotland where it has spent a couple of weeks on Sleeper duties.

XP2017 leads ST24 to Sydney through the Horseshoe curve within the town of Harden. Despite NSW TrainLink operating these trains since 2013, branding has yet to appear on the former CountryLink fleet. There is currently plans to replace this fleet with more modern rollingstock too, however a repaint has been promised of the current XPT and Xplorer fleet.

47727 leads 47749 through Attenborough and heads towards Nottingham with 6Z56, 06:02 Washwood Heath – Boston Docks formed of empty steel wagons, 25th August 2010.

Locomotive History

47727 was built at Crewe works as D1629 and entered traffic in October 1964 allocated to Nottingham MPD. Two months later it was transferred to D16, Nottingham Division which was in effect Toton and it remained a Midland Main Line engine for virtually the next six years before transferring to D05, Stoke Division (Crewe) in March 1971. After a short spell allocated to D02, Birmingham Division (Bescot) it transferred to the Eastern Region at Immingham in June 1972. It was renumbered 47047 under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme and remained an Eastern Region engine transferring to Tinsley (1973), Holbeck (1975), Immingham (1976) and Stratford (1980). At the end of 1980 it entered Crewe works for classified repair and emerged in January 1981 fitted with electric train heating and a new number, 47569. The next thirteen years would see 47569 allocated to Gateshead (1986), Inverness (1987), Eastfield (1988), Bristol (1989) and Crewe (1991). 47569 was renumbered to 47727 in January 1994 when fitted with “cab power demand” equipment and RCH type nose end jumpers for operating with remote driving vehicles on Royal Mail trains. It was transferred to Toton in January 2004 and stored a month later at the Willesden Railnet Royal Mail depot. In 2007 it was sold to Serco (now Colas), moved to Eastleigh, overhauled and and re-entered traffic in September 2007. 47749 was originally D1660 and was built at Crewe works, entering traffic in February 1965. Under the 1973 TOPS renumbering scheme it became 47076 and was renumbered 47625 when fitted with electric train heating in 1984. Renumbered to 47749 in 1995 it was withdrawn in March 2004 and dispatched to EMR Kingsbury for breaking up in 2007. However it was purchased by Serco (now Colas), moved to Eastleigh, overhauled and re-entered traffic in September 2007.

LSRC 4307 leads four other units southbound under the cantilever signal at Atwood Wye, leading a loaded grain train for Wixom, MI. as clouds roll in during what started out as a bright sunny day.

Rewind 10 years and this is what the Atwood Wye area looked like in Burton, MI. flic.kr/p/2kCS8NV when it wasn't cool. Two main was still there, and in daily use for train meets and D737 to use for customers.

At that moment in time in 2012 Flint to Saginaw had already fallen to the Lake State Railway in 2005, as CSX retreated south.

From the "railfan's" perspective of golly gee the LSRC is such a great catch because of "insert what ever you want here", lets take a side by side comparison of what the "railfan's" claimed was so much better, and we will just start from the time I hired at CSX in Saginaw in March of 2000

First there is the "LSRC has such cool power". Well I remember plenty of GP40-2s, SD40-2's, SD50's, and even SD70AC's (for all intents and purposes they look the same on the outside as there SD70M's) we even occasionally had SW1500's and MP15's. On top of that we had GP38-2's, SD60's, SD60M's, C40-8's, C30-7's, and the list goes on and on of what "railfans" claim is good power, but hardly anyone took notice.

Then there is the claim of lots more trains. Is there really? While I am sure the group running LSRC is doing a great job, as I see it first hand anytime I go home to visit. Is it really more?

In 2000 to 2005 during CSX between Saginaw and Plymouth one could see, two southbound road trains to Toledo. (becoming one train around 2002), Q296, Q5??, a pair of long distance locals D735 and D736. A pair of road freights Saginaw to Pt. Huron Q330, Q331. The Flint/Grand Blanc road local D737, the locals switching GM at Grand Blanc, coal and grain trains and more. On any given day between Flint, Saginaw and Plymouth you could see at least 8 to 10 trains. With LSRC you see essentially two (counting all the way from Saginaw to Plymouth not as crews but as trains) if no extras? On a really good day maybe 6.

What about traffic? While things happen out of CSX and LSRC's control, lets look.

Auto racks, CSX most defiantly even north of Flint. LSRC just now starting north of Flint, and in the beginning some south of Flint.

Grain trains, CSX you bet. LSRC, yes same ones as CSX, with the addition of ones from Standish.

Auto parts, CSX absolutely even to the end there were some left. LSRC even through no fault of there own, not so much.

Stone. CSX very much. LSRC at the beginning yes, although not sure how much they do anymore.

I could keep going on, but I think most get the idea. So what is so much cooler about LSRC? The paint job? Is that what makes the railroad and track they run over now So Cool?

N460 leads train #8080, the Up Swan Hill VLine pass, through North Bendigo on Monday Nov 6, 2023. There aren’t too many diesel-hauled passenger services left in Victoria so this was worth the effort to record. N460 is wearing what is euphemistically called the "Violet Crumble" livery.

UP 3094 leads a double stack train past the handiwork of the UP earlier this summer when they put about 20+ cars of manifest on the ground here at Loring including 6 haz-mat tankers. We are now a couple months removed from that and the pile of freight cars remains right where the derailment contractor left them.

It's a pity that they didn't wipe out a few more trees here. It would be a pretty neat shot if about 3-4 of the big cottonwoods that are here ceased to exist. As a matter of fact, the whole curve at Krieder is about fully overgrown to the point that it might not be a decent photo spot much longer.

CSX #7384 leads NS Charlotte-Atlanta #221 across the calm waters of the Tugalo River as it crosses from South Carolina into Georgia on this beautiful December morning.

Leads a heavy freight train into Pirdop station.

Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261 leads a Steam Excursion through Hastings, Mn. bound for the Chicago area, the only time I got to chase this beauty so far, wanted the famed Maple Springs shot but a cloud blocked the sun there so I opted to pass on that shot, I was able to get 4 or 5 shots in sun, way better than none, steam excursions do work fairly well for photography on cloudy days but it's just a matter of preference for me & have to have all my subjects perfectly lit or at least halfway decently lit up by the sun

K183 leads and K153 trails on a Steamrail Victoria suburban shuttle on the return to Flinders Street Station from Sandringham. The train is pictured at Brighton Beach Station which is located very close to Port Phillip Bay.

Leads 5Z75 Ely Rec to Crewe Midland Pullman ECS through Egleton

Another shot dug out of the archives. Stac Pollaidh, seen from the main path up that wonderful little mountain.

The path leads round the back of the buttress on the right, to emerge on the summit ridge at the little gap indicated by the photo note. The main summit (612m) is at the far end of the ridge; it's a fairly serious scramble to get there.

Wide angle style, CN 2577 leads stacker train Q120, as they pass by the VIA rail station at Sackville, New Brunswick. At one time, this was a booming junction. Behind me, a branch track ran off and became the Tormentine Sub, which ran to Cape Tormentine, and the the ferry service over to PEI. Those days are long gone. This also used to be a big stop for the passenger trains, but now, it's a quick 30 second drop...and that's if there's any passengers to be dropped off.
