My wife with one of the large male tigers at the temple. I think they said this guy weighed about 350 lbs and was one of the biggest tigers we saw all day.

 

I've finally had a chance to get into some of the Thailand pictures from my SLR camera. I have thousands to sort through, etc etc - but I'll be posting a couple dozen over the next couple weeks. The tiger temple is located near Kanchanaburi, Thailand and is an active Buddhist Temple. It was a truly once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience.

This is a photograph of a sculpture of Alison Lapper, a British artist who was born in 1965 with no arms and shortened legs due to a condition called phocomelia, caused by the morning sickness drug Tholidomide.

 

Lapper is an inspring example of someone who has managed to overcome her childhood- spending the first 19 years in residential institutions, and her disability. She has (amongst other achievments that in the past would be thought inconcievable for a woman with disabilities) graduated with a first class honours degree in Fine Art from Brighton University, Learnt to drive, Become a successful artist, and a mother to a son named Paris (featured on the Robert Winston Documentary "child of out time").

 

I feel that the placing of this Statue in Trafalgar Square, London, a place always packed with people, and dominated by statues of Male war heroes, really shows the developement in acceptance, and the overcoming of prejudices in our society. Not so long ago, before the Women's liberation and the birth of feminism, people would have laughed at the thought of a statue of a woman in Trafalgar Square. Who would have thought that a Pregnant, Naked, Disabled Woman would ever take center stage as both a stunning work of art, a beautiful woman and an iconic public Statue?

En 1934, Talbot se rendit compte que les constructeurs français devaient opérer un virage radical pour redevenir compétitifs. Il fit alors appel à l'ingénieur Antonio Lago qui insuffla d'emblée un esprit nouveau et concentra ses efforts sur le gain de performance et la compétition automobile en vue d'augmenter les ventes.

Talbot continua certes de produire des voitures de série mais une énergie colossale fut investie dans le développement de machines de course ultra compétitives avec en ligne de mire les célèbres et très exigeantes 24 Heures du Mans.

La T26 GS - châssis 110057 - que nous vous proposons devait initialement prendre le départ de l'édition 1950 de la classique mancelle. Malheureusement, elle ne put être terminée à temps. Une fois achevée, la Talbot fut vendue à Louis Rosier, vainqueur dans la Sarthe cette année-là, qui l'inscrivit immédiatement pour la course de 1951.

Certain de pouvoir décrocher un bon résultat à son volant, Rosier voulut mettre toutes les chances de son côté et choisit finalement comme co-équipier Juan Manuel Fangio, le légendaire pilote de Formule 1. Las, ils durent abandonner au 92ème tour suite à une fuite du réservoir d'huile. L'incident laissa un souvenir douloureux à Fangio qui reçut des projections du liquide bouillant.

Après la course, la T26 GS fut modifiée par Carrozeria Motto afin que le châssis 110057 soit équipé d'une carrosserie à roues carénées, conformément aux nouvelles règles en vigueur au Mans. La Talbot prit ensuite le départ du Grand Prix de Monaco 1952 où, frappée du numéro 64 et pilotée par Rosier et Maurice Trintignant, elle ne couvrit que 37 boucles.

En 1953, la T26 GS 110057 fut vendue à George Grignard qui continua de courir régulièrement en compétition à son volant. Il était même prévu que Grignard participe à l'édition 1954 des 24 Heures du Mans en compagnie de Guy Mairesse. Deux mois avant l'événement, un accident survenu lors de la Coupe de Paris disputée à Montlhéry coûta la vie à Mairesse et la T26 fut remisée dans son camion de course. Elle y resta en l'état jusqu'en 1958, date à laquelle son propriétaire actuel en fit l'acquisition.

La carrosserie avant avait certes subi des dégâts lors de l'accident de 1954 mais la Talbot restait en parfait état de marche sur le plan mécanique. Les réparations nécessaires à son transport au Royaume-Uni furent vite achevées, la T26 GS n'ayant besoin que d'un nouveau pneu avant et d'un radiateur de remplacement. Arrivé à destination, le nouveau propriétaire restaura la voiture en profondeur, notamment pour que le châssis 110057 retrouve sa carrosserie d'origine et ses roues non carénées.

Proposée après avoir connu le même propriétaire pendant 56 ans, cette superbe Talbot-Lago est un élément incontournable du monde des courses de voitures classiques depuis son retour en piste en 1961. C'est pour vous l'occasion rare d'acquérir un modèle mythique, à l'histoire riche, avec lequel vous pouvez participer aux plus grands rendez-vous de voitures de collection, tels que le Goodwood Revival, le Mans Classic et le Grand Prix Historique de Monaco.

 

In 1934 Talbot decided that they would need to turn a corner in order to put French manufacturers back on track. Engineer Antonio Lago was called in and immediately instilled a renewed focus on performance and racing in order to help the company increase sales.

While Talbot continued to build road cars, a huge amount of effort was put into developing a series of front-running racers that could tackle the notoriously gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours.

The car offered here, chassis 110057, was originally intended for the 1950 race, but unfortunately was not completed in time. Once finished it was sold to Louis Rosier, the 1950 Le Mans winner, who immediately entered the car in the 1951 race.

Sensing the strong possibility of achieving a good result, Rosier made sure he had the right co-driver on-board and eventually selected Formula 1 star Juan-Manuel Fangio. Unfortunately the car retired from the race after 92 laps due to an oil tank failure which caused extremely hot motor oil to spill on Fangio, leaving him in great pain.

Following Le Mans, 110057 was re-bodied by Carrozzeria Motto to enable it to wear closed-wheel sportscar bodywork, bringing it into line with the new Le Mans regulations. The car was subsequently entered in the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix where, running number 64 and with Rosier and Maurice Trintignant at the wheel, it retired after 37 laps.

1953 saw 110057 sold to George Grignard. The car continued to receive regular race outings, and was scheduled to appear at the 1954 Le Mans 24 Hours where Grignard would have shared with Guy Mairesse. Unfortunately it was involved in an accident a few months prior to the event in the Coupe de Paris at Montlhéry, which sadly cost Mairesse his life. Following the accident, 110057 was locked away and left virtually untouched on its transporter until it was purchased by its current owner in 1958.

While the front bodywork of the car was damaged by the 1954 crash at Montlhéry the car itself remained mechanically intact, and the necessary repairs to drive it back to the UK were soon completed. Indeed, all that was needed was one front wheel and a replacement radiator. Upon arrival its new owner carried out an extensive restoration, including returning 110057 to its original cycle-wing body style.

Offered following an extraordinary 56-year ownership, this magnificent Talbot Lago has been a key fixture in historic racing circles since it returned to the track in 1961, and presents a rare opportunity to acquire a hugely significant car. It is eligible for all of the finest historic events around the world including the Goodwood Revival, Le Mans Classic and Historic Monaco Grand Prix.
