"Verse read in the Art Gallery.
Kristopher Sakmussemm and Yvette Christianse each read one of their poems at a ceremony at Newcastle Region Art Gallery on September 23.
The reading was a highlight of an evening held by the Hunter District Water Board to present the Mattara Bicentennial Poetry Prizes. This year's Prize, the eighth, attracted an increased number of entries, namely 1,3000.
The HDWB sponsored the prize, the Literary Arts Board of the Australia Council provided a grant and the University published the eighth Mattara anthology of entries, The International Terminal
The anthology contains work by 33 poets as well as the prize winners. The title is taken from that of Les A. Murray's entry.
The judges commended highly entries from Ken Chau, Yvette Christianse and John Watson. They also expressed pleasure at the high standard of work received from poets under 25. Sudesh Mishra, John Hawke and Sarah Newton-John are among the younger poets in this collection, while the youngest are Matthew Schulz (18) and Timothy Stevens (16).
Kristopher Saknussemm, marketing manager for the Law Institute in Victoria, won the $6,000 senior section.
Robert Carver, a Canberra poet, currently completing a PhD thesis at Oxford University, England, won a special Bicentennial prize of $4,000 for Under 25 poets.
Mr Saknussemm's willing selection of eight poems, Say When, Call to Worship, Lesson at the Millpond, Juice in the Pail, Midwives and Men, Avalanche Lilies, Lowering Him into the Tank and Alligator wishes, recount a tensely competitive father and son relationship fought out against a backdrop of North American trout-stream and forests.
Mr Carver's poems, a sequence entitled Feasting with Solipsists, were praised for their dream-like narratives by this year's judges, Ms Fay Zwicky, from Perth, Mr Andrew Taylor, from Adelaide, and Dr Christopher Pollnitz, from the Department of English.
Copies of The International Terminal are available from the Department of English for $12 each.
Board President, Mr Allan McLachlan, said it was decided to offer the youth aware as an encouragement for young Australian writers.
'The board views the Mattara Poetry Prize as its traditional contribution to the arts. In this Bicentennial year, we decided to make a special contribution in the form of a youth award.'
The Board has also joined forces this year with the Newcastle Bicentennial Community Committee and NBN produce the Hunter Kid's Book."

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. - Staff Sgt. Kristopher Stallard, a health care specialist with Bravo Company, 426th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne) headquartered in Upland, California, completes a written exam during the 2014 U.S. Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition here June 26. Kristopher was planning on heading down to San Francisco this weekend, for a week-long trip to the, what do you call SF, the city by the bay? The Golden Gate City?
Anyway, he ain't going, cuz he went and had himself born with a wiggy appendix that picked this weekend to finally get fed up with Kris and make its escape.
So instead of leisurely driving down the west coast, Kris is sitting in a semi-comfortable bed wearing a hospital smock.
This all went down yesterday, so I can only assume he is now Kristopher minus appendix, being woken once an hour by a hospital nurse, as they tend to become hysterically afraid that a patient will up and die on them in the middle of the night.
Instead of great SF food, he's eating what, in my experience, I've found to be the worst food on the planet. Hospital food.
So, if you get a chance, go over to his Flickr page, hail him up, give him some words of comfort.
Cuz there ain't no comfort coming from that vaguely meat-like thing in the middle of his dinner plate.

The “Cat in the Clouds” is a symbol of imaginative free association, representation, childhood and the question of belief. This series of works creates a narrative sequence that follows the rules of the romantic comedy genre in film – the characters will meet, split apart, then finally reunite.
Each of the paintings begins as an interpretation of a film still from a romantic comedy - When Harry Met Sally, Annie Hall, Sleepless in Seattle, Knocked Up etc. Elements of film language (the photographic still, the close up) and painting language (color washes, expressionistic line, traced line) are dramatized and placed in an active relationship with each other.
This grouping continues Benedict’s interest in a multivalent approach to painting. Although the series is designed to be read as a narrative, the “story” will not be played out solely on the surface of the works, but also through a slower accounting of formal relationships.

On 9/27/14 - 142 volunteers removed enough trash to completely fill a 40 dumpster which included 290 trash bags of litter from Bread and Cheese Creek (from the Berkshire Community to North Point Boulevard) and North Point Road. These photos show them hard at work on this day! 10 tires, 6 shopping carts, 4 cans of paint, 3 rugs, 2 TV’s, a mattress and box spring, a reclining couch, a 55 gallon drum, and a toilet were all items that were removed from this historic stream. Additionally 1 ton of metal was pulled from the creek and will be recycled with the money going toward helping to pay for our next cleanup. All food left over will be donated to Rita’s Table a local food kitchen dedicated to helping feed the needy of Dundalk. Thank you Volunteers you are worth your weight in gold and more!!!
We are a group of volunteers who worked with the community in association with National Public Lands Day, the Ocean Conservancy, American Rivers, Trash Free Maryland, and Day to Serve on this cleanup.
We would like to Thank Entenmann’s Baker Outlet for donating donuts; Re/Max Realty for donating hotdogs and a hotdog cart for the day; Lafarge for donating pulled pork, potato chips and soda; and Gotugo for donating a portable restroom for the event!
We would also like to thank the following groups who showed up in large number to help for the day: The Boy Scouts, The Girl Scout Brownies, the U.S. Navy, Dundalk High School, Saint Timothy’s School for Girls, Towson University Students, Johns Hopkins University Students and the Forestry Association! Thank you all for helping to make this cleanup an incredible success!

Vermont State Police are investigating the shooting death of Roberto Fonseca-Rivera, 43, of Boston. Fonseca-Rivera was found dead Friday inside this produce truck parked along Route 103 in Bartonsville, Vt. Two bullet holes pierced the windshield.
