The Kraken hitched a ride on the underbelly of a Norwegian schooner long ago to quietly slip into the deep bowels of Lake Michigan, occasionally venturing to the mouth of Milwaukee to satisfy its hunger.

"Through the fog and stormy night

Sailors glimpse it's monstrous sight.

Tentacles rise dark and vast

Gripping ships, their doom is cast.

Heave ho the Kraken's near

Raise your cups and quell your fear.

Sailors' tales and Pirates dread

Of the Kraken's grasp, we all have bled."

A follow up image to put yesterdays image into context. The tree I have called the Kraken stands out in the wood as it stands on its own in a small clearing with a circle of much different trees around it, almost like it is holding court

much appreciated!

Like some mythical beast rising from the waters this fallen tree invoked a sense of fear in me when I first discovered it.

It also provided a play on words opportunity for me that I couldn't ignore! So whether you want it to look like the mythical Kraken, could imagine the sound of cracking wood as it fell or, less likely, think this picture is a cracking photo, it is posted here anyway!

This is a tree I have been photographing recently as it stands out as different in my local wood, It did make me think of the Hydra from my school biology lessons but the more I look at it the more I see a Kraken

For my dear friends Anne and Iro who witnessed the original release of the Kraken with our old friends. We sure had some good laughs.

Now I've got the nuclear sunrise out of my system I can get back into my comfort zone and post something little more subdued again! Here's one from Hopton last week

This dead tree emerging from the limestone pavement of Gait Barrows looked a very interesting form!

The sinuous, gnarly, textured shape caught my eye and had me taking a shot. There are lots of dead old trees around this landscape, which is similar to the situation across in the Yorkshire Dales. Ash die back being one factor, but it is sad to see a lot of the more stately trees suffering too!

Dystopian Project

I posted a colour version of this here a while back.... 11 minute exposure at Llanrhystud beach, West Wales.

After converting it to black and white, I twiddled with various knobs till it looked something like, and then I added a split tone.

I used the Lee Big Stopper to slow the exposure down, and NDCalc on my iPhone (takes the guesswork out of long exposures).

The belly of the deep rises. Thrashing into being waves under a windless sky. The sea foams, soured with the stench of death, only slightly less pungent than the lingering fears from the last doomed sailors.

This is Kraken, he lives in the little pond on my lanai. I had a toy gator that sat where Kraken is at the moment. Apparently Kraken wanted that spot and wrestled the gator until it fell in the water.

I found this bit of drift wood on a small beach in the river dart. Unfortunately it wasn't in an ideal location to photograph so with the help of a friend I took it back to the car and photographed at a different beach.

Photographing the reflective etching on this leather hat is challanging.

Tako sumiso or tako poke for a holiday feast? May have to wait awhile because this baby octopus and monster-wannabe was too small to harvest!
