Le kraken ([krakɛn] ; transcription « krakenn ») est une créature fantastique issue des légendes scandinaves médiévales. Il s'agit d'un monstre marin de très grande taille et doté de nombreux tentacules.
Dans ses rencontres avec l'homme, le kraken serait capable de saisir la coque d'un navire pour le faire chavirer, le faisant ainsi couler et ses marins sont noyés et parfois dévorés.
Il est très probable que sa légende ait pour origine l'observation de véritables calmars géants dont la longueur a été estimée de 13 à 15 mètres (40 à 50 pieds), tentacules compris. Ces animaux vivent normalement à de grandes profondeurs, mais ont été repérés à la surface et auraient « attaqué » des navires. Il apparait surtout dans la mythologie nordique.
En fait , il s'agit d'un arbre, le Sophora japonica pendula.

I have never encountered a more curious Caribbean reef
squid. They will often check you out, but always at a cautious distance. I had my wide angle on this day, so I assumed I wouldn't get an image. But this curious guy kept coming closer and closer until it was nearly touching my dome port. I suspect that the squid saw its reflection in the dome glass and liked it.
Unfortunately, the squid also wanted to be below me. Each time I tried to slowly drop down so that I could shoot up to get clean water in the background, the squid would follow me lower. So I was forced to include the busy reef under me in the shot. A small price to pay for a really fun encounter.
I know that squid can be tasty, but I just can't eat them anymore. (Same for octopus.) I prefer to let them do their thing in the sea.

Here is another one of the sand sculptures at the park. It's one of the sculptures which were created for the 24 hour speed carving contest and the one I liked best and voted for. I don't know yet which sculpture won in the end but I will find out the next time I'll visit the park.
