.. 'pehlwans' resting in their ill-equipped hostel. it clearly shows why this 'art of kusti' is vanishing from today's world! some dedicated people are fighting hard to keep alive this ancient tradition, but the state of 'akhara' shows it needs much attention and aids to make it possible.

palace from my hometown, kolhapur, which was erstwhile princely state. this was built at the turn of the century by the father of the revolutionary and visionary king rajashri shahu maharaj. shahu maharaj was one of the first; and this was very difficult for a king at that time; to work concretely towards eradication of cast system in indian society, education for all, infrastructure. he led by example, took the path first where he wanted to take the society. he did whatever best he could to implement a far reaching, futuristic agenda and that to, under the control of British raj. fruits of the troubles he took are now visible all over india with empowerment of the backward classes into mainstream.... many more facets of his life, but on some other day.... with his portrait!

Kushti (Indian Wrestling) is a popular game at Kolhapur. In this south-eastern Indian city, Kushti has a long tradition. It used to be supported by local maharajas. Some of the Kings were themselves, good wrestlers. This game flourished here during the reign of Shri Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the King of Kolhapur, who ascended the throne in 1894.

During this golden age, the monarch built hundreds of Akhadas all over the city and held tournaments, inviting best wrestlers from all over India and beyond.

Wrestlers wake ups at 3:30 AM in the morning. They practice six times a week more than 6 hours every day. They live together in one small room above the arena and their only belongings are a blanket, few items of clothes and some books about the art of Kushti.

Unbelievable scenes at Peak Forest as 5593 Kolhapur emerges out of Dove Holes tunnel with the Derby to Buxton "The Buxton Spa Express" I think this charter, organised by the area manager at Derby, was one of the first steam specials to run this way since the end of BR steam. Kolhapuri Kusti (Wrestling)

The city of Kolhapur and his wrestlers are famous around the world for the traditional Indian wrestling (kusti).

The wrestlers are known as “Malla”, they are trained by masters called “Vastad” and the wrestling match is played in a square dark red clay ground. Wrestlers belong to gyms called Akhara or Talim, where wrestlers live under strict rules, following a diet that consists mainly of milk, alomds, ghee, eggs and chapati.

Before training wrestlers cover themselves with mud.

With the necessary politeness, I had the chance to visit Motibag Talim, near Mahalaxmi Temple, where I was warmly welcomed by the Vastad, a glory of the country, and all his wrestlers, the best bodyguards for a photographer!
