No 5593 Kolhapur appears to have the sanders full on as it gets to grips with the 1 in 90 gradient at Peak Forest Junction with a Buxton to Derby train on a warm hazy 25th April 1987.

he is one of the most jovial guy in the organisation. although on a wheel chair but he surprises everyone by walking few steps every now and then.
45593 'Kolhapur' stands at Bradford Forster Square on the morning of 30th April 1966 prior to working "The South Yorkshireman No.5" railtour to Carlisle.
45593 was one of 3 Jubilee class locomotives based at 55A Holbeck at the time,the others being 45697 and 45660,whilst 45647,45562 and 45581 were based just a couple of miles away at Farnley Junction (55C closed in October 1966).
The South Yorkshireman No.5 Railtour started here at Bradford Forster Square at 08:25 and traversed the "Little North Western" to Carnforth where punters disembarked to visit 10A. 45593 would then haul the train to Carlisle where it was declared a failure,with 70035 working the train back to Bradford via the S&C in it's absence. Carlisle Kingmoor and Upperby Depots were also visited during the day.
45593,45697 and 45562 would go on to be the last 3 Jubilees in traffic with 45562 'Alberta' the last to be withdrawn in October 1967. Happily 45593 was preserved.

Possibly the first time out since withdrawal by BR and repainting - 'Kolhapur' ready for her short train ride up the bank (4 coaches) with 'Clun Castle' t'other way round , at the rear. . The Jubilee looked absolutely 'stunning ' in that glorious livery - pity that BR could only come up with their blue & white for the short train. Still - as BR organised the show it was pretty good so shouldnt nit-pick! . Clun Castle , a Black 5 , 'Cookham Manor' and 'Princess Elizabeth' were booked , but the 'Lizzie' couldnt make it. 4472 was also to visit and take a proper 'train' out & back. A Steam Fair was also run . , Frequent heavy showers unfortunately made photography difficult ! . This particular shot was upstaged by a later sunny (wet) one - hence the B category.
All in all - a marvellous day - if you didnt mind getting drenched - at least it solved the usual problem of too many people in the way. 29th.September 1968.

Working children from generation to generation are still a common sight at brickworks as they regularly employ entire families - who often make their homes on site. Photo taken at Bhosalewadi village, 100 km to the north of Kolhapur city in Maharashtra province, India.
LMS Jubilee 5593 'Kolhapur' out in the sunshine on the turntable at Tyseley, being shunted into position for this weekend's open days. Taken during a 30742 Charters Event, not specifically part of the charter but more of a bonus prelude while the Tyseley staff were getting everything shunted into place for us.
The rains are back in Mumbai after a long break. This year looked bleak with very little rain till now. But then, if monsoons were predictable they wouldn't be so fascinating ! (this picture was taken in June at Panhala)
It was amazing to capture this perspective of the Swarg Mandap of Kopeshwar Temple at Khidrapur - Kolhapur, MH, India. It was built in the 12th century by Shilahara king Gandaraditya between 1109 and 1178 CE.

A couple of scanned images from years ago. A couple of crimson lake liveried 'Jubilees' on the East Lancashire Railway. Back in 2003 5596 'Leander' visited the line (Crossing the river Irwell on the approach to Ewood Bridge)
I didn't get many action shots of 45593 "Kolhapur" while it carried Brunswick Green. Here's it's powering brake van rides during an Open Day at Barrow Hill on the 22nd July 2000.
The Vittal Birdev Annual Yatra, something that is not heard of, is celebrated at Pattan Kodoli village in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra attended by thousands of devotees coming from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra between 17th and 24th of October. The festival is celebrated to offer prayers to the community diety of the shepherds, Shri Vittal Birdev, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. They consider that the festival and rituals would bring good fortune.
Vittal Birdev Yatra One of the craziest festival yet the one which remains unknown and unexplored is the annual Haldi Festival at Pattan Kadoli in Maharastra. Shepherds from Maharastra, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka assemble at Pattan Kadoli and celebrate the festival by immersing themselves and everyone around with Turmeric Powder. Over 200000 devotees merge into this little village which gets packed to the brim and of course, gets coated with yellow color.
Shri Vittal Birdev Annual Festival is observed in at Pattan Kodoli village 17km from Kolhapur (Maharashtra, India). It is the birth anniversary or Janmotsav festival of Vitthal Birdev Maharaj, who is a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Birdev is the family deity of the Shepherd community from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Andhra Pradesh (India). On that day, I saw Devotees of God Vitthal Birdev are taking slaps of the hunter on their bodies without any care and without any fear.

LMS Stanier '5XP' or 'Jubilee' Class (BR Class '6P') 4-6-0 No.5593 'Kolhapur' (BR No.45593) in 1937 Crimson Lake livery at Tyseley Shed, 6 July 2014. It has a Stanier Mk.II 4,000 gll welded tender.
LMS Jubilee class 5593 Kolhapur is seen in this early Great Central Railway image leaving Quorn & Woodhouse in 1991. This scene has changed a good deal since this date with double track having been reinstated and the whole environment is now much more orderly.
About Kushti : - Kushti (Indian Wrestling) is a popular game at Kolhapur. In this south-eastern Indian city, Kushti has a long tradition. It used to be supported by local maharajas. Some of the Kings were themselves, good wrestlers. This game flourished here during the reign of Shri Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the King of Kolhapur, who ascended the throne in 1894.
During this golden age, the monarch built hundreds of Akhadas all over the city and held tournaments, inviting best wrestlers from all over India and beyond.
Wrestlers wake ups at 3:30 AM in the morning. They practice six times a week more than 6 hours every day. They live together in one small room above the arena and their only belongings are a blanket, few items of clothes and some books about the art of Kushti.
Two kids caught pissing by the roadside near Kolhapur, on the Bangalore-Pune National Highway-4. When will the highway authorities build public conveniences? There isn't even one such facility between Pune and Kolhapur.

ExLMS Stanier ‘Jubilee’ class 4-6-0 45593 ‘’Kolhapur’’ – apparently with nameplates removed – in the smoky interior of Leeds Holbeck shed in February 1967..
The loco had entered service in 1934, and was named (after a State in Western India) in 1936. It was withdrawn by BR in October 1967, and purchased for preservation in January 1968. It was steamed in the late-60s and 70s, and restored in the 1980s in LMS maroon livery, and was in steam again during the 80s and 90s, but was taken out of service in 1997, and has been a static exhibit since then.. It was sold off in 2024, and will now be moved to Carnforth for overhaul and restoration..
The shed closed to steam at the end of September 1967, and today (2026) part of the site is still in use, by railway maintenance and refurbishment companies..

LMS Jubilee 5593 Kolhapur at Tyseley, June 2018. Today Vintage Trains have announced they plan to restore the locomotive to mainline running condition, excellent news which will hopefully come to fruition.
