This picture of Kolhapur was taken during a Great Central Railway gala back in 1992 and she is seen outside the shed at Loughborough. I have tweaked this image to remove a rather nice telegraph pole that was directly behind the smokebox. I have always said that the Jubilee class look exactly how a main line steam locomotive should look. Everything just seems to be so well proportioned.

Great Western Railway 6990 Witherslack Hall can be seen on the adjacent line.

In India, the state of Maharashtra is one of the largest contributor in agriculture. Most farmers own farms, where they grow their own crops. But due to uncertainty of produce, some rely on sugarcane harvesting as it provides them a guaranteed income at least during the harvesting season.

These photos and videos show the daily routine of these farmers and their working environment.

Ok, I know I have a telegraph pole growing out of the smoke box.

45593 "Kolhapur"pushes a brake van away from the depot buildings during an Open Day at Barrow Hill on the 22nd July 2000. The loco was working shuttles up and down the yard at the time. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see this loco in steam. I don't know whether we'll ever see it working again. It was sold to a new owner in 2024, but whether said person has plans to overhaul it, I don't know.

Some rare event happens in winter season due to fog in northern India. One example of it is seen here in this picture wherein Bhusawal (BSL) WAP-4 towed 12148 Hazrat Nizamuddin - CSMT Kolhapur Superfast Express which was running late by almost 8 hours. Immediately Ex. Kalyan, Pune (PUNE) WDM-3D # 11375 took charge from behind as train is reversing direction from here. Loco Pilot was testing light and emergency flasher and one of those moments captured herein in winter sunshine afternoon. Same train will return from CSMT Kolhapur as 11050 Ahmedabad Express.

About Kushti : - Kushti (Indian Wrestling) is a popular game at Kolhapur. In this south-eastern Indian city, Kushti has a long tradition. It used to be supported by local maharajas. Some of the Kings were themselves, good wrestlers. This game flourished here during the reign of Shri Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the King of Kolhapur, who ascended the throne in 1894.

During this golden age, the monarch built hundreds of Akhadas all over the city and held tournaments, inviting best wrestlers from all over India and beyond.

Wrestlers wake ups at 3:30 AM in the morning. They practice six times a week more than 6 hours every day. They live together in one small room above the arena and their only belongings are a blanket, few items of clothes and some books about the art of Kushti.

The sun shining through the. round house at Leeds (Holbeck) MPD hits 45593 on the nose. The loco has lost its (KOLHAPUR) nameplate and is not in steam on this occasion but it will be ready for action when the fire is lit and pressure is raised. It was used regularly on the Settle and Carlilse route in the last two years of its working life.

Built by The North British Loco Co., in 1934, the loco was based at sheds on the LNWR section of the LMS and BR (Except for a short period at Burton in 1964) untill 1965 when it was sent to Leeds (Holbeck). It was withdrawn from there in October 1967 and went into preservation. It has been run on BR tracks in the 1980's and on the GCR in the 1990's but now awaits another overhaul.

The same Sunday morning as the previous image and it looks like I had the time to drive into Wigan to catch up with 'Kolhapur' on its crew familiarisation run prior to working the 'Southport Visiter' specials two weeks later.

Seen here after a run round its support coach prior to working back to Southport Steamport. On the footplate, friend and ex Springs Branch driver Arthur Pollard, I recall remarking how small the fire was in the grate that day.

In the mid-1960's Stanier Jubilee 45593 Kolhapur is stabled in the sidings at Leeds Holbeck (55A). The loco had been transferred from Newton Heath to Holbeck in March 1965 and would be one of the last two Jubilees to remain in active service, being withdrawn in October 1967. The loco was preserved and is currently at Tysley awaiting overhaul. The other three preserved Jubilees 45596, 45690 and 45699 are all currently working on the mainline.
