Somewhere in the Western Ghats on the way from Goa to the city of Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra, India.
The Western Ghats,also known as the Sahyadris (Benevolent Mountains) ,is a mountain range that covers 140,000 sq.kms. in a stretch of 1600 kms. parallel to the Western coast of India.It traverses the states of Kerala,Tamil Nadu,Karnataka,Goa,Maharashtra and Gujrat.The Western Ghats play an important role in the onset of the Monsoons in India.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the eight hotspots of biodiversity in the world.The average elevation in around 3900 feet.There are 7402 species of flowering plants,1814 non-flowering plants,139 mammal species,508 bird species,179 amphibians,6000 insect species, 290 varieties of fresh water fish and also a very large variety of reptiles.
I will be mostly off for a couple of weeks dear friends although I will try and look in whenever I can.:-)

Monumento in pietra che fu costruito nel 1870 dallo scultore inglese Carlo Francesco Fuller. Il monumento ha la forma di un baldacchino a volta sorretto da quattro colonnine, sotto il quale è presente il busto scolpito del defunto principe indiano Rajaram Chuttraputti di Kolhapur con un'iscrizione in quattro lingue: italiano, inglese, hindi e punjabi.
Il giovane principe era di ritorno da un viaggio a Londra, dove era andato per studio e per salutare la regina d'Inghilterra, e mentre era a Firenze alloggiato al Grand Hotel di piazza Ognissanti fu colpito da un malore improvviso che il 30 novembre 1870 lo uccise all'età di ventun anni.
Il suo corpo fu arso secondo il rito indù alla confluenza di due fiumi (in questo caso Arno e Mugnone), dove furono sparse le sue ceneri.

Jubilee class Kolhapur drops down from Ais Gill summit with a northbound CME on 21/3/1987.
A waterfall on Hell Gill beck,a source of the river Eden,can just be seen above the third coach.
The other 3 surviving Jubilees have done plenty of trips on the line but this loco has only managed 2 in preservation

Kolhapur is a town which has many things going for itself. It is the home to the production of the famous "Kolhapuri" "chappals" ( open sandals made of leather ) which are worn all over the country. I have worn them for many years and they are a delight.
Kolhapur is a rich town with millionaires sprouting everywhere, no thanks to the Information Tech boom. these are all old families with vested interests in sugar and allied agro products.
The food is a melange of hot chillie based spices and soem famous food items bear the moniker " Chicken kolhapuri" or "mutton kolhapuri". they taste good but are fiery hot.
This is shot right outside a famous temple, the neame of which I forget, May God help me ;-)))

In a very rarely seen BR green guise Ex LMS Jubilee 45593 'Kolhapur' has just passed under the A46 road bridge at Thurcaston hauling a Leicester North bound train on November 5th 1995.

I'm not sure if there are plans to get 5593 back into steam?

September 1994 saw the arrival of 5593 Kolhapur at the ELR, while it was there Geoff Silcock of then " Sentimental Journeys" was instrumental in changing the locos identity, here it stands on shed at Buckley Wells before running a photographic charter. The loco also assumed the identity of sister engine

The Vittal Birdev Annual Yatra, something that is not heard of, is celebrated at Pattan Kodoli village in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra attended by thousands of devotees coming from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra between 17th and 24th of October. The festival is celebrated to offer prayers to the community diety of the shepherds, Shri Vittal Birdev, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. They consider that the festival and rituals would bring good fortune.
Vittal Birdev Yatra One of the craziest festival yet the one which remains unknown and unexplored is the annual Haldi Festival at Pattan Kadoli in Maharastra. Shepherds from Maharastra, Andra Pradesh, Karnataka assemble at Pattan Kadoli and celebrate the festival by immersing themselves and everyone around with Turmeric Powder. Over 200000 devotees merge into this little village which gets packed to the brim and of course, gets coated with yellow color.
Shri Vittal Birdev Annual Festival is observed in at Pattan Kodoli village 17km from Kolhapur (Maharashtra, India). It is the birth anniversary or Janmotsav festival of Vitthal Birdev Maharaj, who is a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Birdev is the family deity of the Shepherd community from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Andhra Pradesh (India). On that day, I saw Devotees of God Vitthal Birdev are taking slaps of the hunter on their bodies without any care and without any fear.

Tyseley Jubilee 5593 'Kolhapur' passes Gathurst Locks on the Leeds - Liverpool canal with a Sunday crew familiarisation run prior to working the 'Southport Visiter' specials two weeks later.
