* I know for many people the big day falls on Saturday but for me personally the day of the winter solstice is much more important. It's the day the sun begins its slow return to the Northern hemisphere. In Britain it will occur at 15.58 GMT on Tuesday
Tomorrow many people will visit Stonehenge to celebrate the day. The stones have been in place for 5,000 years so they have seen a great many solstices . While much is not known about the reasons these stones were erected by the Neolithic people . Recent research does suggest that the way the stones are lined up suggests it was the winter solstice not the summer one that was the main ritual event . For these agrarian people to return of the sun and the promise of another years harvest would have been a very significant
Talking of the sun we could use some on the East Coast its been grey dark and damp for a week now with no sunshine forecast for the next seven days its so gloomy

I don't know if this means I'm a full fledged landscape photographer yet, but I can honestly say I have gotten my "feet wet".
A couple of weeks ago a Flickr friend and fellow photographer David Frey, contacted me to let me know that he would be visiting the San Diego area around the holidays and ask if I would like to spend the day shooting Hospital Reef. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to spent some time with a higher caliber photographer than myself which always leads to more learning.
At 3:00am I packed up my gear and headed off down the freeway giving us plenty of time to scout the reef and set up. We checked the tide time and height using a fisherman's site and found that the tide level would be very high, but I wasn't sure how high up on the reef the best formations are situated. It was going to be a total crap shoot as far as tide levels go but I was confident that the weather was going to be perfect. It had rained the day before and the NWS radar that I had been watching in anticipation all week promised a great sunrise and possibly sunset. After chatting with David for a while we soon located the potholes and several other popular formations and then waited for the light as it was still totally dark.
I knew the sun would be behind us in the morning but I was hoping that we would get some good cross lighting which usually happens if it's cloudy in the west and clear in the east, which was case this morning, and it didn't disappoint.
This is a shot taken later in the day. When David and I returned for sunset. He went directly to the composition that he had found earlier in the day and planted himself there for three hours. "I'm gonna wait for the light to come to me" he said. I'm not that confident when it comes to staying put during "panic time" thats what i call the 30 minutes during sunset. I ran around to 7 or 8 different compositions during the sunset and grabbed some really cool shots. I am still learning how to manipulate time through my lens and I think I went a little to long on this shot, but considering I was using no filters I think it turned out fairly good. I hope you like it too. :)

I know that You all are in spring mode already, but I can't be considerate of that right now. I have still some beautiful memories of the last winter waiting to be shared. This one here is one of them. It was definitely one of the most beautiful sunrises I was allowed to witness in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains during the last years. The rock on the right side is called large goose. In the background you see the river Elbe passing by and behind it mt. Lilienstein. Moments like this are the main reason, why I am doing this and why I am loving this so much.
Ich weiss ja, dass Ihr alle schon im Frühlingsmodus seid, doch ich kann da gerade keine Rücksicht darauf nehmen. Ich habe noch immer einige wunderschöne Erinnerungen an den letzten Winter, die darauf warten geteilt zu werden. Dies hier ist eine davon. Es war definitiv einer der schönsten Sonnenaufgänge, den ich in den letzten Jahren im Elbsandsteingebirge erleben durfte. Der Fels auf der rechten Seite ist die große Gans. Im Hintergrund sieht man die Elbe vorbeifliesen und dahinter den Lilienstein. Momente wieder dieser sind der Hauptgrund, warum ich das mache und warum ich das so sehr liebe.

I know there is a shortage of insects, which is very worrying, but this only hit home to me after I returned from a 830 mile journey, and there was hardly an insect on the windscreen or bumper...Years ago had to stop after twenty miles to clean them off...I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to why this is happening.
As you know, with mirrorless cameras, getting flight shots is tough with a busy background. In the Z9 firmware update 4.0, they added a feature called Auto Capture. I tried it out yesterday. All you do is set up a tripod, enter some parameters for the shot you want, activate the program and walk away. The camera looks for any combination of settings and takes shots on its own. This one was set up for motion in a defined area of the frame. Lets say, it worked great.

You all know lupines in my garden already from the photos with the raindrops on their leafs. Off course I don't want to keep the beautiful flowers back from You. I did walk around them quite often already, trying to find a way to give them the right attention. Mostly I didn't had an idea and if I had one, I didn't like the result. Until the setting sun was helping me out a lot.
Ihr alle kennt die Lupinen in meinem Garten bereits von den Bildern mit den Regentropfen auf ihren Blättern. Natürlich möchte ich Euch auch die wunderschönen Blüten nicht vorenhalten. Schon oft bin ich um sie herum gelaufen und habe mir überlegt, wie ich sie wohl am besten in Szene setzen könnte. Meißt ist mir nicht viel eingefallen und was mir eingefallen ist hat mich nicht gefallen. Bis die untergehende Sonne, mir mächtig unter die Arme gegriffen hat.

This historical bridge know as Locust Bridge, also called the Linn County Bridge, the covered bridge is located about 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Laclede. At a length of 151 feet (46 m) with a width of 16 ft 8 in (5.08 m) it is the longest of the four remaining covered bridges in the state of Missouri. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. In August 1868, a contract was awarded by the Linn County Commissioners to Bishop & Eaton for a bridge across Locust Creek, with the cost not to exceed 5,500 dollars.[5] The structure is a Howe truss, constructed of white pine. Vertical iron rods tightly secure diagonal wooden beams to the bottom and top of the structure.[3] In addition to its utilitarian function, over time the bridge was a hangout for locals with some proclaiming their love for one another and their presence at the bridge with carvings along the bridge's internal walls. As a popular fishing and swimming spot, the bridge was visited by John J. Pershing; his boyhood home and the state park bearing his name are nearby. (Missouri Dept of Nat. Res.)
The water course that used to run under this bridge has migrated about a half mile to the west of this structure. It is a beautiful piece of historical architecture from an era of craftsmanship gone by.
