A lovely old '40s egg slicer!

I got this today at a car boot sale - couldn't resist the lovely green Bakelite (urea).

The handle is different from the previous cream maker and has the name BEL on it rather than JUBILEE.

Today's theme in We're Here! is "Life of a Kitchen" and that includes kitchen gadgets.

Here's mine. An Ulu knife from Alaska. (held, ironically, in my left hand, the wrist has the Big Dipper and North Star from the Alaska Flag tattooed on it). This particular Ulu used to belong to my parents. It has a display stand and it sat in the hutch with my mom's good plates and other such things. They brought it out whenever the Disabled Guy came over for a meal because he can cut his own food with it, one-handed.

To get one for yourself, I highly recommend The Ulu Factory in Anchorage. (for those who don't know, I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska).

The Ulu history can be read here, but the gist of it is, the Native Alaskans used this tool to do everything from chopping veggies to cleaning a whale that they harpooned. They were made of bone, some were made of wood. The blades were made of slate.

When the Disabled Guy went from being just "Jerry" to "the disabled guy", I got him an Ulu to use for cutting his food. When he had the stroke, the rehab place gave me a list of things that would make his life a little easier (his new-found one-handed life) and a "rocker knife" was on that list. And at the time, it was around $50. That was money we couldn't spare. My friend (who still lives in Alaska) sent me a $10 Ulu knife (at my request).

My mom told me to keep this one when they took us out to a fancy restaurant for our 25th wedding anniversary. She always brought it when we went out to dinner with them, just in case he needed it.

And, now I do. (that is, when it isn't sitting on the display stand in the living room).

THEME: Valentine.

No matter whether it comes on the North- or South-winds, East or West, when I close my eyes... I always hear your loving whispers in my heart...

Slicing a strawberry in an egg slicer for my preschooler's lunch so he doesn't take too big a bite and choke on it.

I had two containers, so I put together two of these loaded with copper scoops, spoons, dippers, enamelware scoops and dippers and threw in a few blue flowers. I usually use one on each side of the sideboard.

A small and helpful kitchen gadget: rotary grater with 3 drums for grating cheese and vegetables etc.. 40 years old, no stainless steel, but still in good condition !!!

What? That's an Edlund Top-Off, a jar opener, this is totally a kitchen gadget picture, stop looking at me like that!

And, ugh, I hate attempting anything creative when my sinuses are so clogged up, it makes my eyesight all wonky and my brain all foggy, and everything just looks so bleh to me. If this is total crap, blame bad genetics plus unpredictable weather changes.

This candy thermometer worked perfectly for this project. My sugar syrup turned exactly the right consistancy.

This is a Jubilee cream maker. The top container is a light brown, mottled Bakelite. The plunger is cast aluminium and the base, glass.

These come in a variety of colour and different patterned glass bases. Originally it would have had a screw on piece that was a handle and lip for pouring. These usually get lost.

This side of the handle shows JUBILEE SERIES.

The green top is six sides instead of round ahd the glass jar is faceted.

Here are my 12 blenders for group 1 in the kitchen gadget theme... They are a combination of pieced, fused, and embroidered. No need to choose as they are only a little bit different!!!

I bet you were just wondering:"Why has nobody invented a sausage cutting machine yet?" Yearn no more for such a miracle device, the Germans have done it again!

And it appears to be wireless as well, for mobile sausage cutting.

But a word of warning, to you lonely internet types: Don't store this next to your fleshlight™.

Abstract detail from a rarely (if ever) used kitchen gadget

I found the board in the trash somewhere & bought those neat hooks that only fit in pegboards (not just any hook will do!). It hangs over my kitchen sink where there's a cubby hole under cabinets. I keep thinking of painting it white, but think the brown adds color to the room.

The only thing that bothers me is the pricey cheese grater top right that I haven't used once in 2 years! Anybody want to trade it for something?

I love kitchen gadgets, and this evening I was trying to think of something to shoot with my macro lens. Here is what I came up with. It is pretty abstract. Do you have any guesses about what it is? Thanks for playing!!!

I have a lot of these gadgets in my kitchen!

An antique Nesco kitchen gadget that is five articles in one. It is strainer, fruit jar filler, funnel, measure and dipper

Sugar the pup is a delightfully life-like sculpture composed from re-purposed vintage kitchen gadgets.

Trying out a friend's Vitamix. So far - soup and hummus - very impressive but a verrrrrry "rich" machine.
