- Virgin Atlantic was the first European airline to install keypad security locks on cockpit doors throughout its fleet, meeting U.S. security requirements, following the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Starting on September 14th 2001 I chose to cease covering the terrorist attack on the United States in New York and set out to photograph related stories elsewhere. I originally figured my assignments away from Ground Zero would last a month or two … they ended up lasting more than three and a half-years and spanned three continents.
As we approached the 10th Anniversary of September 11 2001 I sought to create a 16 photo gallery of images I shot of the United States following 9/11. After my third round of editing I was at 183 images … now after five rounds of editing I have settled on 25 images. These images are mostly in chronological order.

Nikon D200 with 105mm macro lens f3.2 and 5 second exposure on manual. White balance on fluorescent to give it a purple hint. LED torch briefly on the keypad. Inspired by some great bokeh shots I have seen on Flickr.
The ruggedized R style 212R keypad features a cast aluminum housing and all metal faceplate that has been treated with polyurethane to increase its protection from corrosion. The ruggedized uses an all metal Braille, alpha-numeric keys. There is also an internal sounder that is used to indicate key press feedback. The Ruggedized’s housing can be mounted to a variety of surfaces. Suggested mounting includes; gate goosenecks, post, concrete walls, etc. Additional tamper resistance is provided with the onboard tamper loop that can be used to indicate the removal of the faceplate.
