The history of MAZ plant began in August 9, 1944 when the USSR State Defense Committee issued a decree on the organization of the automobile assembly plant in Minsk, only recently liberated from Nazi. The technical background was the production buildings of the plant Gros-K-Werk, built during the Nazi occupation of 1941-44 by Daimler-Benz on the territory of the former repair shops of the Soviet tank division. Since the end of 1944 in parallel with the construction of the new plant it began "batch" assembly of trucks GMC, Studebaker and Mack series NR, from engineering kits that were delivered from the U.S. under the lend-lease. In 1944 it was assembled 232 cars, by March of 1945 it already produced more than one thousand cars per month, and in 1945 it was assembled 14 thousand cars, making it one of the largest auto assembly plants in the USSR. On August, 26th, 1945 the State Defense Committee has planned the reorganization of Minsk automobile assembly plant into a full-scale automobile plant with the organization of production of MAZ-200 dump truck model with 110 h.p. General Motors diesel engine. In the meantime, after the WW2 there were still thousands of vehicle sets on the assembly plants of the USSR, most of them were taken to MAZ, which continued to assemble American cars and at the same time mastered the production of trailers. In 1946-1947 in Minsk trucks and light trucks Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, International Harvester, Mack and Studebaker were assembled with payload capacity from 0.75 to 10 tonnes; according to various sources in 1946 there were assembled 3600 or 3960 cars. Finally, in October 1947 the first five MAZ-205 dump trucks were assembled at the plant according to the documentation and with the direct technical support of Yaroslavl automobile plant. Soon the entire production of two-axle YAZ-200, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, tractors was transferred to Minsk. Three-axle series YAZ-210 of the same series was transferred to Ukraine in Kremenchug, where KrAZ began to work. YAZ completely concentrated on engine production for these plants of the two fraternal Russian republics. At the end of 1948, construction of the first and in 1950 the second stage of the plant was completed. As a result, in the same year of 1948 it was possible to organize the batch production of automobiles and when the construction was finished to reach and then to exceed the designed capacities. Thus, in 1951 the plant produced 25 thousand cars against the planned 15 thousand. Not only the output of trucks was growing but also new advanced models were being developed. Thus, the world's first 40-ton dump truck MAZ-530 got a "grand prize" at the World Industrial Exhibition in Brussels in October 1958. In 1959-1961, due to the beginning of specialization of Soviet automobile industry, production of dump trucks MAZ was transferred to BelAZ plant in Zhodino, and production of single-axle tractors - to Mogilev automobile plant. Back in the mid-1950s at MAZ was created a Special Design Bureau (SKB-1) and the production of army multi-axle all-terrain truck tractors MAZ-535 and MAZ-537. A well-known Soviet automobile designer Boris L. Shaposhnik had been the head of the SKB-1 for many years. In November 1958 the first prototypes of MAZ-500 and MAZ-503 trucks were assembled at the Minsk Automobile Plant. December 31, 1965 production of the first generation MAZ trucks - MAZ-205 was finished. In September 1970 the production of modernized MAZ-500A trucks began and in March 1976 the first dump-truck MAZ-5549 from the new family of MAZ-5335 left the assembly line. In 1975 the automobile plant together with enterprises BelAZ and MoAZ joined the production association BelAvtoMAZ. On May 19, 1981 the first truck tractor MAZ-5432 of new advanced family of cars and combinations MAZ-6422 was assembled at the plant's main assembly line. On April 14, 1989 the millionth truck of MAZ brand was produced. It was the tractor MAZ-64221. The preparation for a wide production of three-axle tractor trucks was started at the plant. In the late eighties the plant created a concept car MAZ-2000 Perestroika. In the 1980s the plant started large-scale reconstruction with the construction of a new conveyor, which was put into operation in the early 1990s. At the same time in the early 1990's at the stage of conversion the former SKB-1 and then production of special wheeled trucks was reorganized into a separate enterprise Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant (MZKT). In 1996, after the successful passing of the acceptance and operational tests in motor transport facilities of the Republic of Belarus, it was recommended for serial production of a new model range MAZ-5440. On March 11, 1997 the first truck of a new MAZ-54421 family rolled off the assembly line of Minsk Automobile Plant. At the end of 1997 MAZ-54402 and MAZ-544021 trucks that fully meet all the European requirements to heavy trucks for international transportation were assembled. December 10, 1997 an agreement on creation of joint Belarusian-German enterprise for production of "MAZ-MAN" trucks was signed. The distinction of the project from other CIS trucks production projects was that the share of Belarusian assemblies and parts in the joint venture production would be up to 60%. MAZ mastered the production of medium-duty series MAZ-4370 since 1999. Since the beginning of 2000s serial production of new generation trucks MAZ-6430/5440 has begun.

Rare MAZ 200 manufactured in the '60s equiped with digging tower slowly returning to nature.

Its a bit of a hazy shot, but these things are long gone now.

Someone somewhere may find them interesting.

Taken somewhere off the M42 construction site.

Near Bromsgrove perhaps,in Worcs.

Spotted in Zaporizhya, Ukraine. Believe it or not, KrAZ trucks were actually sold in the UK, and marketed as BelAZ for whatever reason, even though that's a completely different company.

Built in 1977, still in daily use!

The all Russian Kraz 256B was imported into the UK as a fully built up and relatively cheap 6x4 tipper where it was sold as a Belaz by UMO Plant of Letchworth, Herts for a few years from 1972.

A few ended up on motorway construction work in the '80s, but I haven't seen any in working order for quite a few years.
