The Vienna Bermuda Triangle is located at the northeast entrance to the Old Town at Sweden square and Morzin square (Franz-Josefs-Kai and the Danube canal) and at Rotenturm street. The metro station Sweden place is operated by the underground lines U1 and U4 and the tram lines number 1 and 2.

The Bermuda Triangle extends from Rabensteig via the Seitenstetten alley to Jewish alley and Ruprechts square. At Ruprechts square is with the church Ruprechtskirche one of the oldest religious buildings of Vienna located. The house Seitenstetten alley 4 houses the main building of the Jewish Community of Vienna as well as the City temple. A the guests of the Bermuda Triangle very familiar sight is a policeman patrolling in Seitenstetten alley because since a terrorist attack on August 29, 1981 the Israelite facilities are guarded.

History

The area of present-day Bermuda Triangle is one of the oldest areas in Vienna, here was once the eastern part of the Roman legion camp Vindobona. In modern times, especially Jewish merchants were based here, to what the naming of the Jewish alley points. In 1826, in Seitenstätten alley the Jewish City Temple was opened. In the 1970s, the area around the Rabensteig, Seitenstetten alley and the Jewish alley primarily as a Jewish textile district was known, since here many Jewish merchants after the Second World War clothing stores for wholesalers operated.

On May 15, 1980 Sepp Fischer opened in a former textile house at Rabensteig the pub Krah-Krah, which is now regarded as the birth of the Bermuda Triangle. The name Krah-Krah and the three ravens in the emblem were not chosen at random. Yet at the beginning of the 19th century, there existed a tavern To the three Ravens after which the alley was first named Raven square, then Three Raben alley, Raben alley and finally from 1862 Rabensteig.

On November 13, 1980, the Cactus Bar was opened in Seitenstetten alley, on May 20, 1981 followed Michael Satke with the diagonally opposite the Krah-Krah located, designed by Coop Himmelblau and known for live music Red angel. Other neo-bistros followed, including Ma Pithom, Twilight & Dark, plem plem and the by Hermann Czech designed Salt Office. Such a concentration in the catering business in a small space only by the shortly before followed liberalization of the Commercial Code was made possible, in the course of which a needs test as a condition for the business license was dropped.

The name of Bermuda Triangle was already in the early 1980s in use for this area. The naming is said to be due to the fact that many a student in this neighborhood for several nights was "lost" and thereafter no longer was able to remember anything. Originally it is supposed the designation to have already been used in the 1970s for an accumulation of new bars around the market Vienna Naschmarkt.

Since the Bermuda Triangle long ago has ceased to be a "sleeper" and that it is mentioned in every good city guide, now also quite a few tourists are among the guests. Meanwhile, northwest of the Jewish alley to Rudolfs square another pub quarter has established, mainly frequented by young people.

Other cities

Also in other cities, there are entertainment quarters with the name of Bermuda Triangle, for example, part of the old town of Linz, an in Frankfurt am Main lying quarter and the since 1988 so named Bermuda triangle in Bochum. However, it is difficult to see how far the influence of the Vienna Bermuda Triangle has occurred or whether followed a completely independent naming.
