Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, Ted Byrnes
February 12, 10pm-midnight
(Following by:
Incubation, 1am-9am
Dream analysis, 9-11am)
Baik Art
Please join us Friday, February 12 for an evening with Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, and Ted Byrnes. Themes of catharsis and cleansing will lead into a sonic space to prepare us to dream and, ideally, to heal. Between 10pm-midnight, Gabie Strong, Christopher Reid Martin, and Ted Byrnes will activate the space of Baik Art. For an optimal experience, be prepared to lie down.
An intrepid group will spend the night following the performance in the ancient Greek tradition of ‘incubation’. Your dreams will be interpreted the following morning by a professional. Please email Matt Wardell at shonufwardell@hotmail.com to reserve your spot. BYOB (Bring Your Own Bedding). Details of the overnight stay will follow. Space is very limited!!
Gabie Strong is a California artist and musician exploring spatial constructions of degeneration, drone and decay as a means to improvise new arrangements of self-reflexive meaning. Strong uses sound performance, radio broadcasting, environmental installation, photography and video as mediums for experimentation.
Her work has been presented on Kchung TV at the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2014 biennial exhibition, Pasadena Armory Center for the Arts, Knowledges at Mount Wilson Observatory, Pitzer Art Galleries, University Art Gallery UC Irvine, and LAXArt amongst others.
Strong has performed at MOCA, the wulf, Los Angeles Contemporary Archive, Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, Human Resources, SASSAS, LACE, High Desert Test Sites, LACMA, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Jabberjaw, and with her all-female free-psych band Lady Noise for Dawn Kasper’s performances at the 2012 Whitney Biennial.
Strong’s work is an exploration of the affect of decay that is experienced from living in the spatial disorganization of the twenty-first century. This disorganization is the result of living in multiple non-places at once—both physical and virtual— where borders are both confining and permeable. I often collaborate with other artists, musicians and poets to create work that embodies the difference of lived experience.
Christopher Reid Martin is a multidisciplinary artist, currently residing in Los Angeles. He first began working with sound in Orange County in 2004, layering sounds from various field recordings of daily life which convey living truths and over processed instrumentation as the reactionary expression. These expressions came to birth the solo project known as of Shelter Death, as it has evolved into a project in which performance and sound interplay to make for a personal reactionary experience in a perpetually decaying world.
In 2010, Christopher had taken his creative endeavors into other avenues, releasing tracks under various formats under his shared Orange County based label Via Injection. Christopher's creative repertoire expanded when he began documenting his experience in countries outside the US, by taking field recordings, foreign radio recordings, and/or taking photographs. Photographs were either left unadulterated as they were taken or digitally manipulating and layered these with old scanned various schematics. This has lead to an ongoing body of work, which fuses reality in the form of photography, with corroded ideas in the form of chopped manipulated grids and manuals. Christopher has and continues to show work in a number of art shows and has performed live in a number of events in projects such as Bailouts, Via Injection, Shelter Death, and under his own name.

Additionally, Ted has played in duo/trio/or ensemble settings with: Mazen Kerbaj, David Watson, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Charlemagne Palestine, Alfred 23 Harth, Tim Perkis, Jaap Blonk, Torsten Muller, Kim Myhr, Jim Denley, Lloyd Honeybrook, Chris Schlarb, Mike Watt, Paul Masvidal, the LAFMS (including Smegma, Airway, Ace Farren Ford’s Artificial Art Ensemble, Rick and Joe Potts, Fredrik Nilsen, Tom Recchion, Vetza, etc), Sissy Spacek (the band), Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and more.
Ted has also collaborated with / worked for a variety of visual artists: he has accompanied a Doug Aitken “happening”, collaborated with Olivia Booth to play her glass artworks, collaborated with Dani Tull on a sound performance, performed with John Knuth and Bret Nicely at an installation in an empty pool, and has performed for FLUXUS artist Jeff Perkins on multiple occasions for his projector/light installations.
Currently, Ted is delving further into the possibilities and realities of solo drumset performance in addition to continuing to work with his existing projects.

EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion)
Matt Wardell
January 9 - February 13, 2016
Baik Art presents EYE-DEE-QUE (Something Like an Asclepeion), a solo installation and series of events by Los Angeles artist Matt Wardell.
For the exhibition, Wardell will present an immersive environment of images and objects by channeling ‘something like’ an ancient Greek temple of healing. Using Baik Art’s unique architecture, viewers experience a literal (and perhaps figurative) katabasis (‘to go down’ as in a descent of some type), but more importantly, and ideally, a catharsis (‘cleansing’ or ‘purification’).
Numerous objects, found and constructed, engage with the verticality of Baik Art’s shaft-like space, surrounded by an installation of wall works including drawings, collages, and repurposed images. Several fabric sculptures fill the gallery functioning as apotropaic totems. These Guardian Figures suggest a ‘presence’, ideally something beyond the object.
Daytime and evening events will further activate the gallery a space for healing. Practitioners from a variety of fields will be on hand for consultation. Music for Healing or What You Need will present a sonic cleansing. Incubation and Dream Analysis will be an overnight event of guided sleep followed by dream analysis with a professional. Utilizing the healing properties of dog saliva, An Event for Wound Licking will be a participatory event pairing wounds with dogs. For the date and time of each event, please contact the artist at shonufwardell@hotmail.com.
In ancient Greece and Rome, an asclepeion was a healing temple, sacred to Asclepius, the Greek God of Medicine. These temples were places in which patients would visit to receive either treatment or some sort of healing, whether it was spiritual or physical. Epidaurus was the first place to worship Asclepius as a god, beginning sometime in the 5th century BCE.
Starting around 350 BCE, the cult of Asclepius became increasingly popular. Pilgrims flocked to asclepieia to be healed. They slept overnight (“incubation”) and reported their dreams to a priest the following day. He prescribed a cure, often a visit to the baths or a gymnasium. Since snakes were sacred to Asclepius, they were often used in healing rituals. Non-venomous snakes were left to crawl on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept.
Matt Wardell seeks to prolong a sense of wonder while placing the viewer in a lingering position of active assessment. He is interested in how we choose to live and in introducing work that facilitates these investigations. Wardell enjoys walking on fences, answering wrong numbers, and giving directions to places he does not know. Uncomfortable laughter, confusion, and irritation tend to be the byproducts of Wardell’s works.
Wardell has exhibited his work at venues throughout the United States and Mexico, including the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (SFMOMA), Claremont Museum of Art in Claremont, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), REDCAT, PØST, Human Resources, Black Dragon Society, Mark Moore Gallery, and Commonwealth and Council, all in Los Angeles. Wardell is a founding member of the artist collective 10lb Ape.

Thousands of university, college and school students – joined by workers – are marching in London and Manchester against Tory cuts to education, fee rises and attacks on jobs and services.
The revolution in Tunisia and uprising in Egypt have clearly inspired the marches. Marchers have chanted, “Egypt, Egypt everywhere.”
London
Aisha, an FE student from Camden in north London said, “I’ve been on all the demonstrations, but some of my friends are here who haven’t been out on the protests before.
“I like the slogan ‘This is only the beginning’, because it’s going to be a long fight against this government.”
Theo, a school student from south east London, took part in the Day X walkouts last year. He said, “Lots of people who want to go to university won’t be able to and people will definitely be affected by the cuts to EMA [Education Maintenance Allowance]. The government is making the wrong people pay – the bankers are getting hundreds of thousands in bonuses.”
For workers, the student protests have been an inspiration.
A GMB rep joining the protest in London said, “I’m here to show solidarity with the students. I’ve got a daughter who has just gone through university and there is no way she would have been able to afford £9,000 a year fees.
“I’m also here to say that I don’t believe in these cuts. We’ve got to stick together workers and students. I think that the TUC demo on the 26 March can give people confidence to fight.”
UCU lecturer Vicky Margree works at the University of Brighton. She said, “We face 100 percent cut in arts and humanities funding which will hit universities hard. And the new fees will make university unaffordable for the majority of people.”
Kelly Rogers, a Unison organiser, said, “Unless we show solidarity with younger people we may as well give up. Students have led the way and enthused workers, showing us how to fight.”
Solidarity with the Egyptian uprising
In London the mood was electric as up to a thousand students joined the many hundreds of people already protesting in solidarity with the Egyptian people outside the embassy off Park Lane.
Chants of “Solidarity, solidarity,” “London and Cairo unite and fight” and “Hey ho Mubarak has to go” are ringing through the air.
One man on the original protest said, “I can’t believe that all these young people have come to support us. This makes us feel even stronger. I can’t wait to send the pictures of all you British people who have come to support us to people back home.”
Before reaching the embassy, the protest stopped outside the Tory HQ at Millbank – a focus of student anger and protests last year – as students chanted, “Tory scum, here we come.”

FESTA - Canterbury Tales
A carnivalesque procession through the former Red Zone.
Following on from the success of LUXCITY, this year’s main event is the carnivalesque Canterbury Tales, conceived and led by Free Theatre Christchurch. This extravaganza of light, colour and interactivity will delight, stimulate and offer reflection as we explore the past, present and future of Christchurch.
At 8.30pm the procession of large puppets and masked performers will assemble near the Bridge of Remembrance and follow a specific path through the central city at night: along the river to Worcester Bridge before ending at the heart of the city in Cathedral Square.
Spectators can join the procession at any point as it moves through different sites that come alive with diverse performances, soundscapes, lights, hospitality, interactive architecture and installations.
This unique experience is the major event for this year’s festival, creating a city-within-a-city based around different Canterbury tales – expect to see the city like you’ve never seen it before!
Dress up, wear a mask and come join the carnival of Canterbury Tales.

From Wikipedia:
Abram Games OBE, RDI (29 July 1914 – 27 August 1996) was a British graphic designer. The style of his work – refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries – has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, "I wind the spring and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind." Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era's social history. Some of Britain's most iconic images include those by Games. His work is recognised for its "striking colour, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography"
The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the women's territorial army. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps.
The ATS had its roots in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), which was formed in 1917 as a voluntary service. During the First World War its members served in a number of jobs including clerks, cooks, telephonists and waitresses. The WAAC was disbanded after four years in 1921.
Prior to the Second World War, the government decided to establish a new Corps for women, and an advisory council, which included members of the Territorial Army (TA), a section of the Women's Transport Service (FANY) and the Women's Legion, was set up. The council decided that the ATS would be attached to the Territorial Army, and the women serving would receive two thirds the pay of male soldiers.
All women in the army joined the ATS except for nurses, who joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS), medical and dental officers, who were commissioned directly into the Army and held army ranks, and those remaining in the FANY, known as Free FANYs.

It is very rewarding to undo the screws when the boat is turned over, and just slip the temporary framework out, knowing everything is square and plumb..

Greater Manchester Police and other emergency services in the county have joined forces in Manchester City Centre to highlight the dangers of drink driving by staging the aftermath of a road collision and showing how they work together to cut free and swiftly convey trapped drivers to hospital.
The dramatic event launched the start of this summer’s drink drive campaign. Last year’s campaign saw more than 5,000 drivers being breathalysed across the Greater Manchester area in June. Of those 311 tested positive and were arrested.
Over the whole of 2011 officers say 141 collisions occurred that were linked to drivers being over the limit. The year also saw a shocking rise in road deaths with 75 people losing their lives on the roads of the county an increase of 42 per cent on the previous year.
Emergency services are particularly keen to drive home the don’t drink and drive message this summer as they fear that people enjoying the Jubilee weekend and Euro 2012 may put lives at risk by getting behind the wheel after a few drinks.
Road safety campaigners point out that people driving at twice the legal limit increase their chances of causing a road crash by at least 30 times. Due to the many factors affecting inebriation they say that it is almost impossible to personally accurately gauge how fit you are to drive and recommend drivers steer clear of alcohol altogether.
Convicted drink drivers get a criminal record, lose their driving licence for at least a year and have it endorsed for 11 years. They also risk losing their job and increased insurance premiums.
However, the real cost of drink driving is the devastating loss of life or life-blighting injury it can lead to agree emergency service chiefs.
“Police officers and colleagues in the fire and rescue and ambulance service face the carnage and devastation caused by selfish drink drivers far too often” said Inspector John Armfield from Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Policing Unit.
“Going to someone’s home and telling their loved one’s that he or she will not be coming home due to the thoughtless actions of a drink driver is without doubt the worst duty that can fall on a police officer.”
Area Manager Dave Keelan, GMFRS' Head of Prevention Services, said: "Our crews now rescue more people from collisions than they do from fires - so we see the devastation a smash can cause on a daily basis.
"There are many reasons to celebrate this summer but none of them is worth mixing drinking with driving because the consequences can be horrific."
Head of Service for Greater Manchester, Ged Blezard said, “The impact these types of road incidents have on families, friends and sometimes even emergency services staff is huge. On many occasions the scene of devastation can be upsetting even for the most experienced medical professional, especially when in many circumstances the accident could have easily been avoided.”
Karen Delaney from DriveSafe, Greater Manchester’s Casualty Reduction Partnership added: “‘Everyone gets so excited when watching the football and England’s potential fortunes, it is easy to get carried away and go over the limit without realising it.
“It is extremely dangerous to try and calculate alcohol levels – it depends on so many factors, BMI, age, weight and food intake during the day. Those that attempt to calculate whether or not they are over the limit often find themselves being arrested for drink driving, or worse, injuring or killing themselves, or someone else.
“That’s why our message is ‘None For The Road’. If you’re planning on watching the match and having few drinks, don’t take the risk of getting behind the wheel, Greater Manchester has a fantastic public transport network and if all else fails just call a cab.”

STRANGE UPDATE: I had last night 05 July put here a "Memorial" for my 2nd grandbaby who died on 02 July & joined his/her brother Gabriel who also died this year 12 Jan 07 but now We are in a state of "confusion" not knowing now as 5 days after we were told our 2nd grandbaby "Little Baby Nava" had died on 02 July 07 bet. 1:00 Pm- 5:02 Pm. and now today 06 July at 1:35 Pm, we get another phone call saying the Baby is still alive or atleast "appearing" so as my daughter's pregnancy & hormone etc.. levels are all registering that they are increasing!! The blood test came back positive! We are in shock, and after 5 days of mourning, to get news like this is quite confusing to say the least! You can read the full story to my 'REPLY" to dkhlucy down below.... Do we mourn or do we celebrate that we have a "Miracle"?? One thing is for sure, we are frightened as we do worry about Little Baby Nava's Health now.. I trust in God, that he has a greater plan, I just need to catch my breathe here for a moment to try to grasp all this...
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
This is my 1st Grandbaby- Little Baby Gabriel's grave whom died 12 January 2007 at 2:30 A.M. age: 56 days, BUT we sadly just lost our 2nd granbaby- Little Baby Nava on 02 July 2007 between 1PM-5PM. Monday, age: 7 weeks and we have no way to bury him/her so I am burying him/her here with his/her older brother Little Baby Gabriel. My daughter was going to announce her pregnancy on the 19th if she felt comfortable as because of what happened to our 1st grandbaby, it is most understandably why. I got the phone call at 5 pm. and just couldn't believe my ears!! We lost 2 precious grandbabies just 10 days short of 6 months! How can this be? Tears just choked my eyes & my heart sank with deep grief. My beloved cousins had told me on 15 May that I was to be a grandmother again which just so happens to be the day Cousin St. Sr. Marie Rose Ferron- Stigmatist, Mystic, Victim Soul of Woonsocket, RI., USA.'s, burial day and her brother Anatole's birthday and now it became the conception day of Little Baby Nava! I didn't say anything to anyone except my husband for worry of what happened to Little Gabey, so I wanted to wait to see. No, the death of Little Baby Nava is not related to what happened to Little Gabey at all, Thank God, it is just sadly, very common for most women to experience miscarriages atleast 1-3 times during their lifetime of child-bearing years. Much of it happens during the "early stages" and some women don't even know they have miscarried til there is another sign. My daughter was at work and collapsed bleeding & had to be rushed to the hospital. There is where she lost Little Baby Nava after they had done the sonogram etc.. She was released before 5 pm when that was the time I got her phone call. My heart aches for my daughter and beloved son-n-law whom love their children so much and was so looking forward to this new precious baby. God, blessed us again with such a beautiful gift of life even tho it was cut very short, Little Baby Nava's life is precious to us!!! He/She is a part of our family forever now and I place him/her under my cousins care as well as my St. Grandparents and relatives. I wish we could have been able to atleast christen & baptise him/her but that is just the "selfish" part of me, as I know, trust, and love God, our beloved Father to do so for us as he has a greater plan for these 2 precious children we share! Thank You my Beloved Father for my 2 precious Grandbabies-You have shown me that Life is valuable no matter the age or stage and I treasure your gifts dearly! Please Kiss them daily from Grandma as they sit upon your precious lap with your loving arms about them. Thank You Father, I know you will and that you hear my prayers!

‘Resist tyranny, join a union’: Huge turnout as Hongkongers hit the streets for New Year’s Day protest
Thousands of Hongkongers took to the streets on Wednesday for the first police-approved mass protest of the new year.
The huge turnout built on a continuing a pro-democracy movement that has reached each corner of the city over the past seven months.
The march received a letter of no objection from the police, and began at around 2:40pm in Victoria Park in Causeway Bay.
The front of the march reached the endpoint at the Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct in Central just after 4pm.
In addition to the five core demands of the movement, protesters on Wednesday also called for increased union participation, supporting the victims of political reprisals, and halting a proposed pay rise for the police.
Protesters chanted slogans such as “Five demands, not one less,” as well as new additions such as “Resist tyranny, join a union.”
Those at the head of the march included some newly-elected pro-democracy district councillors – whose term in office began on January 1.
A group outside Victoria Park were rallying Hongkongers to register to vote: “We want to use our vote to tell the Hong Kong government what we want… We want the people to come out again and win at the Legislative Council election [in September],” Ms Oliver told HKFP, following the pro-democracy camp’s victory at last year District Council elections.
Though the extradition bill – which sparked the movement – was axed, demonstrators are still demanding an independent probe into police behaviour, amnesty for those arrested, universal suffrage and a halt to the characterisation of protests as “riots.”
In a statement, march organisers the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) called on the public to be “more united, persistent, and caring of one another” in the coming year.
“In 2020, the police have already fired the first round of tear gas,” the group wrote shortly after midnight. “Carrie Lam and police brutality turned a festive season into anguish, and perhaps we should say ‘Five demands, not one less’ instead of happy new year.”
In a statement later on Wednesday, the Front said the police had taken no responsibility for any misconduct: “They dehumanise protestors as cockroaches, demean journalists as “black reporters” and arrest medical doctors and nurses as rioters. Now, the government even attempts to increase the salaries of these rioting police.”
“We must persist this fight, for the arrested, injured and departed brothers and sisters in this movement. When victory comes, we shall gather at the dawn,” they added.
During the march, Ms Ho of the Construction Site Workers General Union said they had over 10,000 signed-up members and around 100 active members: “It is a union that already exists, but now we are recruiting more workers with the same political stance,” she said.
“We aim for three targets. The first one, we want to defend our own worker’s rights… We want to get the right to vote in the coming legislative election [as a functional constituency]… The third aim – we are trying to use construction workers’ role in this movement – for example, volunteer teams for people in need – trying to prepare for the general strike.”.....
