A second puzzle I bought from David. This one is from a 1941 WW2 image by Abram Games, nicknamed the "blonde bombshell" recruitment poster!

Appx 9" x 14" (Estimates from memory)

From Wikipedia:

Abram Games OBE, RDI (29 July 1914 – 27 August 1996) was a British graphic designer. The style of his work – refined but vigorous compared to the work of contemporaries – has earned him a place in the pantheon of the best of 20th-century graphic designers. In acknowledging his power as a propagandist, he claimed, "I wind the spring and the public, in looking at the poster, will have that spring released in its mind." Because of the length of his career – over six decades – his work is essentially a record of the era's social history. Some of Britain's most iconic images include those by Games. His work is recognised for its "striking colour, bold graphic ideas, and beautifully integrated typography"

The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the women's territorial army. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps.

The ATS had its roots in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), which was formed in 1917 as a voluntary service. During the First World War its members served in a number of jobs including clerks, cooks, telephonists and waitresses. The WAAC was disbanded after four years in 1921.

Prior to the Second World War, the government decided to establish a new Corps for women, and an advisory council, which included members of the Territorial Army (TA), a section of the Women's Transport Service (FANY) and the Women's Legion, was set up. The council decided that the ATS would be attached to the Territorial Army, and the women serving would receive two thirds the pay of male soldiers.

All women in the army joined the ATS except for nurses, who joined Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS), medical and dental officers, who were commissioned directly into the Army and held army ranks, and those remaining in the FANY, known as Free FANYs.

New Group I joined: 100 Strangers.

So this is my FIRST stranger, I met this man in Florence , chalking on the street ground, his name is Johnny McGrogan and he went to Italy on a Art scholarship for a year and that was 6 years ago ! He chalks on the grounds of Florence at night and models in the day for other art students. He is from Ireland, northern Ireland.

His work was amazing and the title I used was the one he had over the chalk work, thought it was quite witty when working for money :o))

Also this is me trying diptych, joining two shots, not such a good attempt :-/

Bulkheads attached to temporary rectangular braces. Centreboard assembly nearly ready to offer up to the bulkhead slots. The braces are just screwed to the bulkheads. It is very rewarding to undo the screws when the boat is turned over, and just slip the temporary framework out, knowing everything is square and plumb..

Many joined us for the Pontifical High Mass on the feast of Candlemas on Sunday, February 2nd.

Candlemas commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is also known as "The Presentation of Our Lord." This feast traditionally closes the Christmas season. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop Joseph N. Perry.

The name Candlemas comes from the activities associated with the feast. It came to be known as the Candle Mass. A procession with lighted candles is the distinctive rite. This procession into the church for Mass commemorates Christ’s entrance into the temple.

Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis which is chanted at this particular Mass:

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled: My own eyes have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a Light to reveal you to the nations and the Glory of your people Israel.

The Boys' & Girl's Handbook: Kadets of America. 1960.

Found this little booklet in a pile of ephemera at an antique store in the Houston Heights.

An interesting bit of Americana--the Kadets of America was a group formed by a company that originally manufactured "dummy" training rifles used by the US Navy. After WWII, the company ended up manufacturing toy guns and pop guns. The Kadets, which had an estimated 16,000 children registered organized drill teams that competed--sort of a Junior-Junior ROTC.

The Kadets disbanded in 1970, probably due to shifting sentiments in American culture. It's somewhat disturbing to think that a group like this was formed, but I suppose the dummy rifles used by modern drill teams in marching bands date back to these sorts of para-millitary training groups.

From Wikipedia: 'In 1953 Parris started the idea of Kadet Military Drill Teams that communities could form. Purchasers of Kadet toy weapons would receive a free comic book drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger for Customs Comics Inc. telling the story of an imaginary boy named Bob Duncan who became a Kadet and advanced to the rank of Captain. The comic book featured instructions how to do the American manual of arms and offered the full range of Kadet Trainer Rifles, cork firing weapons, rank insignia, and dress and fatigue uniforms for both girls and boys featuring a white riding helmet. The brochure also featured a Kadet Officer's Training School located on a 200-acre (0.81 km2) farm in Savannah and a Kadet song. From 1953 to around 1970 when the programme ended, the Kadets had over 16,000 members.;

ORLANDO, Fla. - Soldiers from the Army Reserve joined their comrades from Army recruiting battalions and Army Reserve Officer Training Corps battalions to promote the branch's leadership platforms, educational opportunities and financial benefits to fans, staff and community leaders participating in the Florida Classic Nov. 21-23 in Orlando, Fla.

Formally created in 1978, the Florida Classic features a series of celebrations that culminate into a football game between the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats and the Florida A&M University Rattlers. This year's game, which kicked off at the newly renovated Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando Nov. 23, stands as the largest sports rivalry between two historically black colleges.

Army Brig. Gen. Norman Green, commanding general of the 4th Sustainment Command out of San Antonio, Texas, represented the Army Reserve during the Florida Classic VIP Reception and Kickoff Luncheon. Green, a graduate of the historically black South Carolina State College, also spoke with cadets from several Florida-based Army ROTC battalions about their career progression and leadership expectations as they transition from the campus parade grounds to the commissioned officer ranks.

The Army reinforced Green's efforts with static and interactive displays positioned outside the Citrus Bowl stadium. Managed in part by Soldiers from the 143d Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), the site gave fans to show off their strength, speed, endurance and dancing moves in a variety of challenges. Participants also received knapsacks, keychains, tee-shirts, dog tags and other items to show off their support for the American Soldier.

The Florida Classic organizers repaid the Army's support with an action-packed football game coupled with a lively half-time show featuring two of the finest marching bands in the country. After a scoreless first half on the rain soaked gridiron, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 18-17 on a two-point conversion in overtime.

I joined a great teacher training workshop at the Museum of Children’s Arts, to prepare for our Maker Art classes. We learned a range of useful practices for classroom management and design thinking.

This day-long event was hosted by social entrepreneur and innovator Jill Vialet, founder of Playworks -- and an Ashoka Fellow like me. She is starting a new project called Substantial, which aims recruit and train more creative people to sign up as substitutes in our schools.

I support Jill’s vision for transforming education by recruiting and training creative people to work as substitutes. You can read more about her and Substantial on their site:

www.substantialclassrooms.org/

This first training session brought together current substitute teachers, those interested in becoming substitutes, and substitute teacher managers at MOCHA in downtown Oakland. We all learned a lot from our coaches and each other.
