Classic British comedy troupe Monty Python returned to the stage one “last” time (or ten, as the case may be) for a final farewell to the surreal comedy gold sketches first made famous in the 1970’s and 80’s.

The remaining original line-up of John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam all returned for the series of shows at East London’s O2 Arena playing out famous sketches, including Dead Parrot, The Lumberjack Song, Spam and The Spanish Inquisition as well as famous songs including show closer Always Look on the Bright Side if Life.

While a familiarity with the classic material would have heightened the show to an unparalleled level, a good time was had by all as classic original sketches and animations were shown on screen in-between the live acts.

The Monty Python boys were joined on stage by “the seventh Python” and former Miss California Carol Cleveland. While various special guests will join the show over it’s run, tonight’s guest was Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding.

My first job after leaving school was with WH Smith & Son Ltd ('For books and a great deal more'). I spent 6 years with them altogether (Trainee Manager then promoted to the heady heights of Department Manager), ending up spending 6 months at the Notting Hill Gate, London W11 branch 1979/1980 . During my time there I sold typewriter paper to John Cleese. a photograph album to Anthony Wedgewood Benn and something I can't remember to Gabrielle Drake (UFO, Crossroads etc). I don't think my mind was on what I sold her - She was georgeous!!! At that time she was in a TV Series - 'The Kelly Monteith Show'. John Cleese was rather funny. he told me that his secretary had sent him in for some typewriter paper. Other 'celebs' (a loose term for some of them) I saw while working there were Billy Idol, Frank Bough, and Dinah Sheridan (Genevieve). At the end of 6 months I moved on to the rather less hectic Chiltern hills of Buckinghamshire. Taken with my Canon TX SLR.

At Last the 1948 Show - John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Marty Feldman, Tim Brooke Taylor, Ami MacDonald

The knights are joined by Sirs Gawain, Ector, and Bors, and a group of monks led by Brother Maynard (Eric Idle). They encounter Tim the Enchanter (John Cleese), who points them to caves where the location of the grail is written.

Arthur (Graham Chapman) and Bedevere (Terry Jones) travel to the Castle Aaargh, which they find occupied by the French forces that drove them off earlier. The knights amass a large army and prepare to storm the castle, but just as they begin to charge, the modern police arrive. Arthur and Bedevere are arrested, and one of the officers covers the lens with his hand as the film breaks in the projector.

I've been cleaning the hell out of my apartment, so I've not been able to work on anything this week. Last night was spent cleaning out my bedroom and listening to C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" as read by John Cleese.

I enjoy drawing realistically and don't do it nearly as much as I'd like. I believe the ability to draw realistically is the foundation of any other kind of drawing, whether as a foundation to build on or a body of knowledge to subvert.

I wish I'd not pushed the values so much here, but it's just a drawing on a cup so I can let that slide, right?

Update: I put this up on a street sign and it is long gone.

Arthur (Graham Chapman) stops at a castle, where the guards ask how Arthur found the coconut halves Patsy (Terry Gilliam) uses to simulate the sound of horses galloping. Arthur leaves after his encounter becomes a discussion about African and European swallows.
