On Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs hosted a major Veteran Career Fair in Washington, D.C., where federal agencies and private sector companies partnered to hire Veterans on the spot. The Veteran-focused career fair and exposition was attended by thousands of Veterans competing for approximately 6,400 public and private sector job opportunities. Federal agencies included Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and EPA. Over 20 private sector partners included Microsoft, Lockheed Martin, Citigroup, Safeway, Washington Area Transit Authority, Philadelphia Police Dept, Johns Hopkins Hospital, JP Morgan and many others.
"Ensuring that Veterans are educated, trained and able to translate their military skills into careers in both the public and private sector continues to be a top priority for the Obama Administration," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. "Now more than ever, America needs the knowledge, skills and abilities of our Veterans, and this generation of heroes is capable of transforming the Nation at a time when we need their leadership and ingenuity."

Sam has set up shop in an otherwise abandoned building. Aside from performing odd jobs his operation recycles old windows, appliances and furniture. While most of the folks bring in their own stuff I suspect some of his material comes from urban scavengers. This is something of a good news/ bad news situation. The bad news is the neighborhood on the north side of the Highland Park & Detroit border is so bereft of businesses this is one of the few viable types of commerce. The good news is it demonstrates the resourcefulness of people in the community. That resourcefulness is going to be in high demand over the coming years for Detroiters.

Despite the mining industry facing a tough economic climate and regular strike action over the past year, the Department of Mineral Resources has approved 36 new mining licences in the past year. These projects have the potential to create about 6 000 much-needed jobs in the sector, particularly ahead of more job cuts by some of the biggest miners in South Africa.
Falling metal prices and increasing labour costs are just two of the reasons that companies like Lonmin and Harmony will be reducing their workforces. Lonmin announced a planned cut of 10 percent of its labour force, amounting to 3 500 employees, while Harmony has cut more than 5 000 jobs since 2012. Similarly, Last week BHP Billiton announced that it will be simplifying its portfolio by demerging a group of high quality assets to create South32, necessitating a labour reduction.
