In Memory of Les Paul
1915-2009
I've changed the posting date on this image to bring it to the front in light of today's death of the legend Les Paul. Without him there would have been no rock and roll.

"My Les Paul"
Led Zeppelin performing Whole Lotta Love during their United Kingdom Tour in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London, England. Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall on January 9th, 1970. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, John Paul Jones.
83/365. 7/12/08.
Led Zeppelin wrote the book on rock'n'roll debauchery.
The stories are part of rock history now. If you want the sordid details then "Hammer of the Gods" is a good book to start with. Who knows, really, how much of it is true. But, as they say, there's no smoke without fire. There was certainly a great deal of bad behaviour, especially in the early years.
It's difficult to condone what went on and, for sure, they wouldn't get away with any of it today.
Said Robert in 1975: "That whole lunacy thing was all people knew about us and it was all word-of-mouth. All those times of lunacy were ok, but we aren't and never were monsters, Just good-time boys,...
Jimmy 1975: "It's airplanes, hotel rooms, limousines and armed guards standing outside rooms..... Sitting in this hotel for a week is no picnic. That's when the road fever starts and that's when the breakage's start,..."
It was no secret that cocaine was the band's drug of choice in the early days, along with marijuana and acid. And copious amounts of alcohol.
Here's the band doing Chuck Berry's "Round and round", from a soundcheck somewhere. "The joint was rockin'"
it“s my new guitar. don“t have a name. maybe the name of my ex-girlfriend? what do you think?

He's running the train and I'm shooting, but I'm not happy with the results. He parked the train in front of a lit ornament and bingo! Under the direction of Jimmy Page; who also took care of all the remastering, Led Zeppelin undertook a reissue programme of their back catalogue earlier this year. Apparently the classic; in many peoples' minds their best album, IV (or 4 Symbols or whatever) and Houses of The Holy are to be reissued sometime soon (now?). The first 3 albums (I, II, III) were reissued a couple of months back. These reissues come in several formats -from simple CD to Super Deluxe Boxsets. These latter formats have the proverbial everything-but-the-kitchen-sink included with them. Like with most "remasters" reissues people should ask these questions before thinking of buying them:
-Do they sound any better than the original vinyl?
-Are they just cashing in on the gullibility / credulity of some people that are willing to pay cash for something that they probably already possess several times over?"
-How many times have these albums been previously "remastered" and reissued?
-Are the boxsets, or deluxe editions, worth the price and do I really need an additional disc "of previously unreleased companion audio" (sic)?
Personally, I won't be buying any of them.

The Deanery and Deanery Garden is a garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll, with a house designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, in Sonning, Berkshire.
Deanery Garden was designed between 1899 and 1901, in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement. The garden (c. 1 hectare) was designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Although in the centre of the village next to St Andrew's Church and the Bull Inn, the house and garden are very secluded, being surrounded by high walls. However, the garden can be viewed from the church tower.
The house was built for the founder of the early lifestyle magazine Country Life, Edward Hudson, essentially as a show home. The house has subsequently been considerably extended on its north side.
The house and gardens, which are now owned by Jimmy Page, guitarist with the group Led Zeppelin.

Physical Graffiti. Side 2, Track 2.
Trampled Under Foot.
Studio version. Another foray into funk, driven by a great groove laid down by John Paul Jones on the clavinet. A great solo from Jones too, with some tasty wah-wah guitar from Jimmy in the background. The lyrics, on face value, are about a car and that's what I used to think it was about. It's really about sex. As are a lot of Led Zeppelin songs ( and most rock'n'roll songs in general). :)
Live version from Earl's Court, 1975. Played at a faster tempo than the album version, it rocks along! Better than the studio version, I think anyway. Watch out for the inclusion of a few lines from Gallows Pole along the way.

[Juniper's design was based on a photograph of the Jagdstaffel 11 Division of the German Air Force during World War I, the Flying Circus led by the Red Baron. Juniper replaced four of the flyers' heads with photos of the band members, added facial hair and sunglasses to some of the flyers' faces or replaced some with the faces of other people. 107 (now 181 as of Feb 11th) confirmed deaths so far. 1000s of people are homeless.
Mum and Dad are safe - fire got to within a couple of kilometres of them but a wind change yesterday stopped it getting any closer.
Fires are still burning within a few kilometres of Warburton where Clare (sisterD3) lives. There doesn't seem to be any direct danger to her place - but she's currently staying at Mum and Dad's.
This is the worst natural disaster this state has ever seen. Large fires are still burning out of control in many areas.
It's a horrible situation.
Update: 126 confirmed deaths now - mid-afternoon 9/2/09.
This 1952 Gibson Les Paul Model originally had a trapeze tailpiece. I bought the guitar in 1985 from Jimmy Brown at the Guitar Emporium in Louisville Kentucky. The top was amateurishly repainted so I had a luthier respray the "Goldtop" and I ground down an ABR-1 tune-o-matic and installed that. This is an extremely light weight and excellent sounding Les Paul. It is a BLAST to play. ;)
Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Mr Jimmy Page is very kindly supporting the 2015 StarCards annual Christmas charity auction, raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity - www.gosh.org

These were scanned years ago from the original negative - some of which I later loaned to Freddie Bannister (who promoted the gig) and never got back.

FAKE 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar. This forgery was sold to a collector as an original 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard. It is not, It is a VERY good fake. In fact it is a hand made replica, not a reworked Gibson product. Don't let this happen to you! Hire an expert who has SEEN and KNOWS a good fake when they see one. I have personally verified thirteen 1959 Gibson Les Pauls that turned out to be fakes.

Due, no doubt, to his interest in all things Crowley, Jimmy was hired by Kenneth Anger to create the soundtrack to his film, Lucifer Rising.
It ended up being a very acrimonious collaboration.
Anger (well named I think) was living in Jimmy's London home and using Jimmy's equipment to edit the film.
Jimmy, meanwhile, took far too long to produce the soundtrack. He was doing a lot of experimentation with it - running the guitar through synthesisers and the like.
Eventually he presented the finished soundtrack to Anger who then cracked it because it was 5 or 6 minutes too short. So he got someone else to do another soundtrack.
Here is an excerpt from Jimmy's version. It's not bad in an experimental sort of way but I don't think I could listen to the whole 25 minutes of it in one go.
For 7dos: processing involved messing with the rgb levels to make it all red.
