Sing loud for the sunshine,
Pray hard for the rain
And show your love for Lady Nature,
And she will come back again.
The people turned away,
People turned away.

I was at a loss today until I was reminded it's Jimmy Page's birthday. I love Led Zeppelin, and E just happens to have a Les Paul, the same as Mr Page, so I coaxed him (E, not Mr Page) to let me take a photo in tribute.

PF Wish you were here - © Pink Floyd
Storm created this iconic cover for Pink Floyd's 9th Studio Album 'Wish You Were Here'
The album was recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios.
Whilst researching for the artwork Storm joined the band on their 1974 Tour and had given some serious thought to the lyrics, eventually deciding that the songs were filled with 'unfulfilled presence' rather than Syd Barrett's illness.
The Artwork was concealed in a dark coloured shrink wrap making the album artwork absent.
Album cover shows how people conceal their true feelings because they risked getting burned. 'Risked being burned' was also a common phrase in the music industry where artists were denied royalty payments.
To create this shot, two stuntmen were used (Ronnie Rondell & Danny Rogers). One work a fire retardent suit covered by a business suit with his head protected by a hood under a wig.
Whilst shooting the wind blew in the wrong direction causing flames to go in to Rondell's face, burning his moustache. The stuntmen had to change positions with the image being reversed later.

Having some fun with WAY too many necks! Catch the Metallica boys on the Death Magnetic tour. It's a GREAT show for sure! Metallica Guitar Hero
I heard this on the radio the other day that on August 13th Les Paul - The legendary guitarist and inventor, whose 'solid-body electric guitar' changed the course of 20th-century music, died at the age of 94.. At the same time I was also hearing about the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock this weekend.... So I looked up a bit of research on both as i thought both warranted some kind of tribute.
I found this fascinating interview with Les Paul in 2008 at the age of 93!!!
video.nytimes.com/video/2009/08/13/obituaries/12474639831...
What a lengend. He had a major influence on a number of renowned guitarists... including a few of my faves such as Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, BB King and John Lee Hooker.
I recently found these old photos of me. Taken when I was around 5 and 13. Both with a 'musical' influence... The one of the left is taken @ 1971... a couple of years after Woodstock. That's Dad's guitar. We had this little thing going. I'd get up real early before he went to work and sit with him while he played his guitar.. He's even let me sneak a cup of coffee with him... It was out little 'special time'. %-)
So I kind of grew up with music. I LOVE the guitar... but never managed to master it myself. Although my Father did and my Brother is also a brilliant guitarist. A lot of my musical influence comes from my Mother too. She had some great records when I was growing up too. Like me, she's never mastered playing an instrument but has a huge respect and appreciation for those who can! %-)
As a teenager.. Led Zeppelin was my favourite band. I was amused and pleased to find this old photo of me in my Lep Zep T-shirt. I was SO gutted when they spit up. They were one band I always wanted to see. (Then I discovered Pink Floyd!) I assumed Led Zep were at Woodstock, but have since discovered that their manager 'declined the offer' opting for a solo concert on the same weekend at the Ashbury Park Convention Hall in New Jersey. So I can't really link this photo to Woodstock.. but I can link it to Les Paul, cos Jimmy Page helped immortalise the Les Paul Guitar! %-)
Here are a couple of links I wanted to share....
jimi Hendrix iconic Star Spangled Banner since it's from Woodstock and a classic...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2bGUeDnqPY
But also a couple of others that are particular faves... Oh to be able to play like him... (Any of them really.. even just a smidgen!) I was always impressed that he's left handed... That was always my excuse why I am so terrible... but if anyone could do it he sure could...

I also got sidetracked and found this really cool acoustic cover of Hendrix 'Little Wing'.. played on a Les Paul... %-)

Oh and a couple of others by the other Jimmy.... Page of course... for the nostelga....
he's also playing a Les Paul

You could call this a bit of six degrees of separation..... anyway... it's been a bit of fun for me.. and made me want to get out my Led Zep and a few of other old blues albums and BLAST them LOUD! %-)

Boleskine House (boll-ESS-kin) was the estate of Aleister Crowley from 1899 to 1913. It is located on the South-Eastern shore of Loch Ness in Scotland. It was built in the late 18th century by Archibald Fraser.
Crowley purchased the home in order to perform the operation found in The Book of the Sacred Magick of Abra-Melin the Mage. In order to perform it, Crowley (1989) says,
"One must have a house where proper precautions against disturbance can be taken; this being arranged, there is really nothing to do but to aspire with increasing fervor and concentration, for six months, towards the obtaining of the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel".
In Confessions (Ch. 22), he continues:
"The first essential is a house in a more or less secluded situation. There should be a door opening to the north from the room of which you make your oratory. Outside this door, you construct a terrace covered with fine river sand. This ends in a "lodge" where the spirits may congregate".
Crowley eventually sold the manor in order to fund the publication of The Equinox, Vol. III. However, he later alleged that the funds were stolen by the Grand Treasurer General of the Order, George MacNie Cowie. (The extensive mortgaging of the house by that time may in fact have left little funds to steal.)
From the early 1970s to well into the 1980s, Boleskine was owned by famed Led Zeppelin guitarist and Aleister Crowley enthusiast, Jimmy Page. Sections of Page's fantasy sequence in the Led Zeppelin concert film, The Song Remains the Same were filmed at night on the mountain side directly behind Boleskine House

[The original album featured an unusual gimmick: the album had an outer sleeve which was made to look like a plain brown paper bag , and the inner sleeve featured black and white line artwork which, if washed with water, would become permanently fully coloured. There were also six different sleeves featuring a different pair of photos (one on each side), and the external brown paper sleeve meant that it was impossible for record buyers to tell which sleeve they were getting. The pictures all depicted the same scene in a bar (in which a man burns a Dear John letter), and each photo was taken from the separate point of view of someone who appeared in the other photos. The walls are covered with thousands of yellowed business cards and dollar bills. The photo session in a London studio was meant to look like a re-creation of the Old Absinthe House, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1980, Hipgnosis were nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Album Package for In Through the Out Door.]

85/365. 9/12/08.
After copping so much criticism over Led Zeppelin III, the band decided to release the fourth album with no references to the band on it at all. It has no title and the band's name does not appear anywhere on it. On the paper inner sleeve, protecting the actual vinyl, it does say "Produced by Jimmy Page" but that's it as far as any identification goes.
The album is referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, Led Zeppelin 4, Zoso (after the symbols the band members chose to represent themselves), Untitled, Four Symbols, etc. The band refer to it only as "the fourth album".
No single was released for radio promotion either.
The album went on to sell approximately 40 million copies, 23 million in the USA alone - the third highest of all time according to Wikipedia.
The gatefold sleeve has this picture of "The Hermit" by Barrington Colby Mom on the inside.
Although the album contains acoustic tracks, it also marks the return, by the band, to electric hard rock.
The opening track, Black Dog, is classic Led Zeppelin riffery. The song's title has nothing to do with the lyrics though. It was apparently named after a black dog which used to regularly wander through the recording studio.
Live version from 1973.
72/365. 26/11/08.
Early to mid 1970: the band took a two month break from its punishing touring schedule. Jimmy and Robert took off to Wales and rented an old cottage, named Bron Yr Aur, in Gwynedd. Here they wrote most of the material for the band's third album.
However, the cottage had no electricity.
Said Jimmy: After the intense touring that had been taking place through the first two albums, working almost 24 hours a day, basically, we managed to stop and have a proper break, a couple of months as opposed to a couple of weeks. We decided to go off and rent a cottage to provide a contrast to motel rooms. Obviously, it had quite an effect on the material that was written ... It was the tranquility of the place that set the tone of the album. Obviously, we weren't crashing away at 100 watt Marshall stacks. Having played acoustic and being interested in classical guitar, anyway, being in a cottage without electricity, it was acoustic guitar time ... After all the heavy, intense vibe of touring which is reflected in the raw energy of the second album, it was just a totally different feeling.
Most (but not all) of the songs on this album are, therefore, acoustic based. At the time, this raised the ire of the critics, and some fans, who were expecting more of the same heavy blues-based rock of Led Zeppelin 1 and 2. Instead, the album displays much more of the folky side of the band.
Needless to say, initially it didn't sell as well as the previous two releases.
I never understood this reaction because it's not as if they'd never done any acoustic numbers before. Nothing wrong with a bit of variety! In fact, it's that very variety that keeps me coming back to this band over and over again.
Anyway...
this track, Hey Hey What Can I Do was recorded for the album but didn't make the final cut. It did, however, make it as the B-Side of the Immigrant Song single.

This 1952 Gibson Les Paul Model originally had a trapeze tailpiece. I bought the guitar in 1985 from Jimmy Brown at the Guitar Emporium in Louisville Kentucky. The top was amateurishly repainted so I had a luthier respray the "Goldtop" and I ground down an ABR-1 tune-o-matic and installed that. This is an extremely light weight and excellent sounding Les Paul. It is a BLAST to play. ;)
