US Airways - Boeing 757-225 - N924UW (c/n 22204/27)

Caught this rather remarkable sight from Renaissance Island as a sailboat sailed right through the jet blast of this US Airways 757 as the jet came to full power for its take-off (note the boat heeled over and the jet blown mist off the boat's wake).

This 757 was originally delivered to Eastern Air Lines (EAL) in November 1983, it joined US Air as N608AU in February 1992, and wore that registration as US Air transitioned to the name "US Airways", before being registered as N924UW in December 2006.

UPDATE - N924UW was withdrawn from service and placed into storage at Victorville (VCV / KVCV) in Southern California in December 2009.

UPDATE (March 2017) - N924UW would be dismantled and scrapped at Greenwood–Leflore Airport (GWO / KGWO) in Mississippi in 2013.

Not a scene from the Bible but a jet blast pushing back the water at Maho beach, St Maarten.

The fence riders are suffering on the receiving end of an MD-83

One of several warning signs posted near Maho Beach in St. Maarten. The beach is located at the end of Princess Juliana International Airport's runway 09.

Unreal experience.

PS Camera is now fixed :)

A Caribbean Airlines 737 over the end of the runway next to Maho Beach. Everyone's taking pictures of the incoming flight. Seen from the deck of the Sunset Bar & Grill. We stopped here on our way to drop off Lisa and Meredith at the airport. Our own flight was two hours later.

By the way, those "danger" signs are about the blast from jet engines as planes prepare for takeoff here. The danger is real. In this video (not mine), the blast blows a girl across the street and slams her into a concrete wall.

Wingtipvortexes, enginevortexes, jetblast and spray; I love it !

The bone is hard to capture. The afterburners throw up a curtain of heat making everything hazy and they are hard to focus on due to the lack of contrast.

Training on runway 31 at Prestwick with a huge amount of rudder deflection!

It could have been a nice sunset but this fucking goverment and the aiport authorities have an airport with up to 3 fences!! This is not a friendly airport to spotters. Barcelona airport authorites and the local goverment should learn from Amsterm's airport (AMS-EHAM)

I think these folks were making a future youtube video or a segment for a reality TV show...perhaps they were doing jetblast research. I would have really liked to get a shot of this during our takeoff roll a couple of hours later. For safety reasons, we had to make sure the engines would develop full thrust before brake release.

Insel Air - McDonnell Douglas (Douglas) MD-82 (DC-9-82) - PJ-MDB (c/n 48021/1078)

Aside from the 747 and 757, the MD-80 (like this Insel Air MD-82) perhaps generates the most intense jet blast while taking off from Princess Juliana. This is in large part due to the aft-mounted engines being closely paired and the fact that those engines are not high-bypass turbofans, but traditional turbofans (JT8D), where hot jet core thrust accounts for a greater portion of their power (as opposed to cooler fan air thrust on more recent engine designs.) I can only imagine the malestrom a Boeing 727 (which is powered by three aft-mounted JT8Ds) generates at Maho Beach when taking off.

Unfortunately, aside from the amateurish camera work, this video plays in fits and starts on Flickr for some reason.

Delivered brand new to Austrian Airlines as an MD-81 (DC-9-81) in February 1983 as OE-LDX and named "Tirol." Converted to MD-82 standard in December 1990. The aircraft was next operated by Spirit Airlines as N812NK beginning in December 1999. After Spirit, then went into operation for Kulula Air (kulula.com) as ZS-OPU in January 2005. After Kulula, Insel Air began operating the aircraft as PJ-MDB in June 2008.

UPDATE (September 2017) - In July 2016, PJ-MDB would be withdrawn from service and placed into storage at Curaçao International Airport (CUR / TNCC) in Willemstad, Curacao. The aircraft would be scrapped in March 2017.

The train was only rolling at walking speed, but the 5-second exposure, combined with the LED headlights, really made it shoot past.

IS TORONTO READY…for the Hawk?

And the glorious return of the RCAF?

I'm not sure they are.

Less than two weeks now…this lone GOLDEN HAWK featured on the cover of Canadian Aviator last month…will be ripping up the sedate and virginal skies of Toronto. In fact HAWK ONE will be ripping up the skies all over CANADA, this year, in celebration of what, Torontonian?

No idea.

Yup, too lost in other things, silly things, waterfront things, green things…saving the planet. Shutting down the Island Airport. You know the boring stuff…the make-believe stuff. The Al Gore nonsense.

Still no idea? That's what I thought—

Celebrating 100 years of powered flight in Canada!

The GOLDEN HAWKS (note plural) were created to celebrate the 50th.. And this lone Golden Hawk returns 50 years later to jetblast the 100th for us!

For those other Canadians who are a littl' confused by this whole affair…maybe even afraid of this proud display. Don't be.

CANADIANS aren't in touch with the CANADA Hawk One represents.

A proud Canada. A much different Canada on the world stage then. A red tory Canada then.

Not the leftist joke you see before you.

HAWK ONE. Here. Downsview. Wings and Wheels 2009. May 22, 23 and 24th.

All the other Hawks are gone now—

This one refurbed by Michael Potter (yeah, that one, the software giant guy) to celebrate the 100th Year of powered flight in Canada. Coast to coast.

And the engine that powers this baby? MADE in TORONTO.

And from before,

"Remember long…LONG…LONG before the SNOWBIRDS…there were the GOLDEN HAWKS!

Formed in 1959, the Golden Hawks were created to celebrate the 50th Year of powered flight in Canada.

They were disbanded in 1964 after 317 airshow demonstrations.

The GOLDEN HAWKS pioneered the “starburst” maneuver and the use of two solo pilots working together as part of the overall team demonstration. Pretty much all aerial demonstration teams have adapted this setup since–

The GOLDEN HAWKS were famous for wrapping up their demonstration by doing a low level flyby, with canopies open, and waving at the adoring crowds (please Michael Potter get your pilot to do this!).

This Canadair Sabre was made in Montreal (under license from North American Aircraft) and the Orenda engine was made in Toronto. How’s that for an all-Canadian effort!

A big hip-hip-hoorah to Michael Potter for putting the Golden Hawk back in the air, one more time, for all Canadians.

And if my political party was in charge…the Hawks would replace the Snowbirds…post haste!

MEET 777man… as he BLASTS one of the event (Wings & Wheels Heritage Festival 2008) co-ordinators who has a natural stance similar to a “Doonesbury” character. Likely, the carefree attitude to go with it as well.

And because of that, 777man is losing his marbles, again.

He’s in that guys face…ALMOST as close as he got to JETBOY’s face.

777man has a point, though.

WHAT WAS 777man’s point?

Well…when the marshal guided JETBOY and his L-29 fighter jet into position he signaled to JETBOY to swing his aircraft around and JETBOY with not a care in his head, dutifully responded.

And the crowd immediately behind got JETBLAST: www.flickr.com/photos/news46/2520379628/

And yes, sticks and stones and tarmac debris can break your bones, teeth, faith in the goodness of man, whatever…

The point lost on JETBOY initially, but I’m sure he’ll never forget it now, as even I have nightmares about it, is…

“YOU SIR are in control of that airplane!

And JETBOY, rapidly losing the will to live, pathetically responded, “But the marshall told me to swing it around!”

777man bellowed, “YOU SIR, ARE IN CHARGE OF THAT PLANE!!!!!

In other words JETBOY…its supposed to be ALL ABOUT safety…and would you drive your jet into a wall…if the marshall “motioned” you to do it???

No, no, you wouldn’t.

And that’s why, JETBOY just stood there, and he had nothing left to say.

By the way, JETBOY…777man is not jus’ any superhero.

He is an Air Canada Boeing 777 pilot, the 777 being the current flagship airliner of the Air Canada fleet. He, therefore, is an elite pilot, chosen to fly the “cream of the crop”.

So, you just listen there, son–

AND FINALLY, 777man even owns HIS OWN airport in Tottenham…where light and ultralights congregate on a few grass strips.

And JETBLAST is never allowed.

Mike, oops, 777man even has his own Super Cub, so I’m sure Taylorcrafts are most welcome!!

The Sequel~

Taking off. The heat haze from the engines has blurred the picture somewhat but it still shows how undulating Birmingham's main runway is.

Ferrari 458 Italia Themed after F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Jet Fighter

At a first glance, it appears that there's nothing really special about this 458 Italia other than it's a new Ferrari and that it's covered in dark grey vinyl wrap. However,

take a closer look and things start to get interesting...

This Italian supercar was themed after the notorious F-117 Nighthawk stealth attack aircraft with the matte gray vinyl wrap incorporating a rivet-style design. Other

notable features include the rivet graphics on the window and windshield frames as well as numerous other aircraft-inspired labels such as the "Heater Exhaust", "Beware of Jetblast" and "Pull to Open" [door-handle] signs.

Since the begining of July, aircrafts are now parked facing North on the "Lima" parking, on the North side GAC. It's to avoid jetblast to enter in the nearby GAC building. This configuration was already in force during the late 1970s, but was changed due to the nearby light aircraft's grass runway, which was closed in late 2017.

Jet Blast

Some of the jet blast coming from a KLM 747 as it takes off from Princess Juliana (SXM).

In about 7 SECONDS… there are going to be a whole lot of folk who will ask themselves the question: why me?

DISASTER is about to strike!

There before you we have a L-29 Delphin a Czech fighter trainer flown by JETBOY.

Notice TWO THINGS.

JETBOY is "max attentive" to the marshall (the flagman) and "min attentive" to the crowd milling about him.

And remember I had just watched IRONMAN a few days previous, so I did not expect to meet an actual superhero and supervillian ever, let alone only a few days afterward!

But meet and see THEM in action I did.

Okay, you've waited long enough!

Disaster strikes!!!!

The crowd WAS STILL recovering, removing stones and sticks from their teeth when 777man vaulted into action!

SOON, the sequel!
