3rd January 2022 in Pype Hayes Park, after another visit to the hospital where my husband, Trevor, is being treated for his heart attack at the end of December 2021. I am spending a lot of time taking our dog, Marnie, out twice a day and answering text messages and phone calls from his and my family. This afternoon Marnie accompanied me all the way to the hospital to take him some much needed items so a late 2nd visit to the park to give us both a break.
The hospital is so understaffed due to Covid, but the volunteers are marvelous, I am so grateful for their dedication and help getting his parcel to him. Not a sign of complaint or tiredness. They even phoned me to let me know it had got to him.
Immensely grateful too for your friendship, my dear friends here on Flickr. Thank you for your lovely messages ...everything. Many of you have your own worrisome problems, but you always give me hope and support. Thank you so much.

Quick field edit of a composite lunar eclipse shot to see how the result might turn out.
There was rain likely after 10 pm, just after totality gave way to partial eclipse, but it was the best forecast I could find within a reasonable drive.
From the moon elevation during the eclipse I determined which lenses to use for shots with both vertical and horizontal orientation.
This is a composite image of the moon and foreground captured at 4 minute intervals. The sky clouded over at 10pm and the wind picked up considerably, so I finished just in time!

I'm under strict instructions from my wife to stop putting up pictures with snow in them... so I shall comply for awhile...
For the last few years, I've done the morning portraits for Greater Peoria Honor Flight. And what does that have to do with this month's calendar. Well - GPHF starts set-up at 4am, and photos are delivered by 6:30am which leaves me sunrise opportunities most of the time. And that's where this shot came from.
Back when I lived on Peoria's West Bluff, this little cemetery was a nice walk at the end of Heading Ave in West Peoria. Finding myself with a little time in 2017, I pointed the camera east just after sunrise with this glorious Oak in the foreground and bam! - the January 2020 calendar was born.
We're not going to follow any specific geographic region in 2020 - just some unused faves from the last few years - so stay tuned for the next 11. Meanwhile, head over to the Central Illinois Photoblog in a few to grab your first calendar of the new decade.

An Elmo balloon managed to make its way onto the ceiling of the back room at CVS. I find balloons all over the store from kids who grab hold of a string as they're walking under the corral, but usually they don't get as far as the back room. My appointed (very tall) balloon wrangler called out today, so this little guy is stuck up there until he loses helium.
On January 24th of 2025 King Christmas Wawa arrives at Newbeak City for his fifth consecutive Arrival of the Month Event. The king was seen by over 150 spectators in Newbeak Park while photographed and filmed in his new January Crystal Maze Suit.
This suit, the most anticipated spectacle of The Arrival of January, is an ivory cotton four button coat, with an off white satin cape, and a cotton boot. The coat and boot are lined with satin fabric and decorated with a mixture of rhinestones, chains, buttons, and crystal charms. The chains on the suit and cape are sterling silver plated, and the chains on the boot are pure sterling silver. The suit weighs in at almost two pounds including the cape.

An image of the evening waning moon captured on the 15th January. The moon is in the waning gibbous phase being just over 95% illuminated at the time.
Crater Langrenus is nicely highlighted near the lunar terminator, at upper right in the image.

Snow Robin...
Caught this little guy playing in the snow in January. I thought they flew south in mass migration, so imagine my surprise to see this bird in the cold and snow. Unfortunately, my camera's autofocus focused on a snowflake, so he is a little out of focus.

This January 31st in 2013 began in Grinnell, Iowa and ended in Gretna, Nebraska per my personal daily log. Knowing that I know this was somewhere on I-80, and from the time of day I know it was close to Gertna. The next day February 1st I drove 630 miles and ened in Rawlins, Wyoming. I began truck driving the first week of 2009, but didn't keep track of my mileage or beginning locations until September that same year. Not sure why I began logging this information on small "Marble Memo" pads, but glad I did. Otherwise I'd be looking at many of my pictures with no idea where I took them.
Before I checked my first memo pad for the location of this shot, I thought it was in Illinois because I remembered a day similar to this. Anyway, glad I started the little log books, with over a million miles driven and 48 States plus a fair amount of the lower part of Canada covered, I often can't remember where I began the day before.
I've seen hundreds of crashes, trucks and cars, most survivable, but dozens that looked impossible to survive. Life on the road gives one a constant reminder how thin the vail is, between life and... well, next.

It was so warm over Christmas that we are seeing springtime in January - these blooms usually appear around March.

9 January 2021: Update on The Corona Pandemic – I’m continuing down memory lane. This very day exactly 4 years ago we arrived in La Paz, Bolivia. The breathtaking view on display is taken from El Alto (4000 m above sea level) looking down over La Paz with a backdrop of the snow-capped mountains Huayna Potosi and Illimani. In Belgium, today, statistics show that for the first time in a while there is a slight increase in the number of infections. During the week from 30 December to 5 January an average of 1,720 people/day tested positive for the coronavirus. This is up 3% on the 7-day rolling average for the previous week. The numbers of hospitalizations and fatalities albeit is still going down. Are these the early signs of the impact of the festive period and the returning holiday makers? The good news is that after the criticism that things were not moving quickly enough the government announced yesterday a revised vaccination program. By the end of this month all residents of care homes should have received their jab. From the end of this month the vaccination of health care professionals will commence. The vaccination of the over 65s and people with underlying complaints that put them at a high risk if they become infected with coronavirus will get under way in March. The rest of the population will be able to get vaccinated from June. In order to facilitate the mass vaccination programme 200 vaccination centres will be opened across the country. The aim is that all those that wish to will have been vaccinated by the end of September. Net-net, there is hope. We just need to get through the next couple of months.
January has brought a reprieve from the succession of winter storms that marked December. It's a welcome lull, don't get me wrong. But the melted snow pack has revealed a drab and dreary landscape. The vibrant colors of summer and autumn have been bleached away by the cold and snow. And the low sun angle continues to haunt the sky. Everyday scenes look familiar, but feel different. These seasonal oddities are often more apparent in photos than to the naked eye. This rather dystopian scene caught my eye. The overall gloom magnified by the dead overgrowth and furniture out on the lawn. The utter hopelessness of the scene punctuated by the one missing drawer in the dresser. (Odd the things I obsess on; as if putting back that drawer would mollify the grimness of the scene. Still I can't stop seeing that little black square.) And the bent and misshapen sapling in (front center) suggests things here won't be looking much better even when spring weather arrives. This house seemed a fit metaphor for the hope and optimism that greeted the arrival of 2021. Our expectations for a new dawn were probably unrealistic. Just like the countryside around me, the world looks familiar, but feels completely different.
A long time ago it used to be that there were only 28 days to the month of January. A time when the blackbird (merla) was the color of white, white as the clouds in the sky, pure as the virgin snow. The merlo and his family lived among the trees, in a nest made of grass and twigs, and every winter the family of white birds waited for the cold days to come to an end. It was never easy in the cold season, they survived on small insects and seeds that lay hidden under the ground. Then it happened, one January, on the 28th day, the weary merlo rejoiced and shouted to the heavens, "Più non ti curo Domine, che uscito son dal verno!" [Lord, I don't care about you anymore, winter is over!]. January, greatly enraged by this disrespectful outburst, asked his brother February to lend him three of his days. He turned the 29th, 30th, and 31st into the harshest of all the month, and the merlo, filled with worry and fear, moved his family away from the trees, away to a stone chimney on the top of an old farmhouse.
For three days they huddled next to the chimney top. Three days of horrendous ice and cold. And when the first day of February appeared in a hopeful ray of sunshine, the merlo and his family emerged, only to find themselves no longer white, but transformed to the color of night by the smoke and soot of the chimney. From that day on, the merlo was always born black. And that is how February came to have 28 days instead of 31.

Secondo la leggenda, una merla, con uno splendido candido piumaggio, era regolarmente strapazzata da Gennaio, mese freddo e ombroso, che si divertiva ad aspettare che la merla uscisse dal nido in cerca di cibo, per gettare sulla terra freddo e gelo. Stanca delle continue persecuzioni la merla un anno decise di fare provviste sufficienti per un mese, e si rinchiuse nella sua tana, al riparo, per tutto il mese di Gennaio, che allora aveva solo 28 giorni. L'ultimo giorno del mese, la merla pensando di aver ingannato il cattivo Gennaio, uscì dal nascondiglio e si mise a cantare per sbeffeggiarlo. Gennaio si risentì talmente tanto che chiese in prestito tre giorni a Febbraio e si scatenò con bufere di neve, vento, gelo, pioggia. La merla si rifugiò alla chetichella in un camino, e lì restò al riparo per tre giorni. Quando la merla uscì, era sì, salva, ma il suo bel piumaggio si era annerito a causa del fumo e così rimase per sempre con le piume nere.
Come in tutte le leggende si nasconde un fondo di verità, anche in questa versione possiamo trovarne un po', infatti nel calendario romano il mese di gennaio aveva solo 29 giorni, che probabilmente con il passare degli anni e del tramandarsi oralmente si tramutarono in 31. Sempre secondo la leggenda, se i Giorni della Merla sono freddi, la Primavera sarà bella, se sono caldi la Primavera arriverà in ritardo.

This early January 2014 image shows the extensive flooding at Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury, Wiltshire. In the far background are the water meadows, made famous by Constable's paintings and the Town Path that crosses over to Harnham, in the extreme distance.
The river is on the right, heavily swollen, flooding the centre and right areas which are normally the park. Notice the pathway which leads under the water and park benches dotted around with their bases under the water.
On the day this image was taken there were a lot of people taking images, some getting dangerously close to the edge of the swollen river.
This is a panorama of thirteen images, merged together in Photoshop. This enabled me to capture the sky and the swollen river/flooded areas in the scene, must more effectively that any single image could. Hopefully it provides a scene similar to the one that could be seen if you were actually at the scene itself.
