This Ivory carving measures only 1/2 inches wide, and 1-1/4 inches long. I can't imagine carving something so delicate out of such a tiny piece of ivory. It's kind of ironic that the artist used a walrus tusk, to carve the likeness of a walrus. The walrus is mounted on a piece of whale baleen, and is the slider on my husbands bolo tie.

Ivory head, hands and feet. The head is not solid ivory. A small part of the back pate was removed and replaced with a wooden addition. Fiber hair, metal crown of thorns and vestments original. The base is definitely not original. The cross may be a later addition as well.

I thought I would try to photograph anything except flowers for Creativity Boot Camp...it just didn't seem creative enough for me...but whenever I thought of the word "ivory" these creamy white blossoms were all I could think of...
....is the last doll my son saw before he passed away.....i finished her just a few hours before ......he died in my arms on 15th of September, was reanimated and in coma until he died on 19th.....so she will be my guardian angel from now on.....and my son, of course, who is with me all the time....
I got her on sale a couple of weeks back and i was always intrigued by this sculpt- androgynous and strong, which upon arrival , it confirmed all my expectations. the sculpt is surprisingly detailed and easy to work with though quite ginormous lols. She is wearing a leatherette empire gown, with shoulder sculpture details and a filigree headpiece all inspired by Cherlize on Snow White and the Huntsman.

I think this is a Ivory Gull and believe it is probably the only one I ever saw! Near St.John's, NL. Rare in this area for sure.

Sto Cristo Moribundo / The Dead Christ
Late 16th Century / Very early 17th Century
FILIPINO
Solid ivory and polychromy
A solid ivory corpus of the crucified Christ known as the Sto. Cristo Moribundo (the Dead Christ). Erroneously attributed as 15th century Spanish and possibly made of mammoth tusk. It was probably made in the Philippines at the closing decade of the 16th century which makes this example rare and highly important as very few pieces survive from that period.
The hair is carved in single strands consistent with archaic rendering of hair on antique Philippine images. The hair is parted in the middle but is gathered and falls in three ropy strands on the right shoulder. This is also consistent with how early images of the crucified Christ were portrayed. The face is thin and severely carved with a spade-shaped beard terminating in twin pointed ends. The face is beautifully carved with a serene -- almost resigned -- expression consistent with Philippine images of the crucified Christ made during the Baroque period. If this would have Spanish, the face would have been more expressive and would have exhibited pain and anguish as is typical of Spanish baroque sculptures. Although not evident here, the carving of the perizonium or tapis is also consistent with how Christ's loincloth is carved in the Philippine style. The arms now missing. The whole mouned on later velvet-clad board.
Height of corpus: 32 cm or 12.5 in.
Estimated Price: £14,000 - £18,000

This old house in Suffield, Ohio, was once part of a large farm and occupied by a family. For several years, during the 1980s and 1990s, it was the site of Ivory Manor Antiques. Still standing straight and tall, it has been empty for several years and, sadly, the deterioration continues.
LIFER! Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Campephilus melanoleucos, Laguna Sonso, COLOMBIA. Belongs to the same genus as the critically endangered Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Campephilus principalis. The crimson-crested Woodpecker (Campephilus melanoleucos) is a very large woodpecker which is a resident breeding bird from Panama south to northern border regions of Argentina, and on Trinidad. Its conservation status is of least concern.

About the Work
By Augusto Marcelino Reyes Gonzalez III
Commissioned by D Maximo Viola y Sison (1857– 1933): a contemplative and reflective tabletop “Calvario” tableau. The “Cristo Expirante” has a resigned expression. It has long hair of “jusi” fibers and on its head are a silvergilt crown of thorns and “tres potencias” symbolizing the three powers of the Lord: Authority (Exousia in Greek), Ability (Dunamis in Greek), and Strength (Kratas in Greek), it wears a “tapis” loincloth of silvergilt repousse with flowers and leaves. The cross itself is of kamagong wood with linear lanite inlay terminating in silvergilt repousse “cantoneras” on three of its exposed sides; there are the requisite INRI plaque (“Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews,” in unusual silvergilt openwork) surmounting the cross, the reverse–painted red glass sun framed by silver rays above the Cristo, and the silver skull and bones representing Golgotha below the Cristo; the cross exudes silvergilt repousse rays with flowers and leaves which symbolize the Cristo’s divinity. The Cristo is flanked by the two thieves, San Dimas the good thief to the Cristo’s right and Gestas the unrepentant thief to the left, as dictated by tradition; San Dimas gestures towards the Cristo but Gestas ignores both of them; both San Dimas and Gestas are polychrome “de tallado” wooden figures with their carved “tapis” loincloths painted red for some reason. The other principal figures in the tableau are the grieving “Mater Dolorosa” (Mary the Sorrowful Mother) on the left, a silvergilt “rostrillo” (of the distinct 1890s type) around its face and a silvergilt heart pierced by a dagger on its breast, clad in a gold robe and blue cape; a distraught “San Juan Evangelista” (Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist) on the right, a silvergilt “paraguas” halo on its head, clad in a red robe and green cape; and a prostrate and desperate “Santa” Maria Magdalena (Saint Mary Magdalene) at the foot of the cross, a silvergilt “paraguas” halo on its head, clad in a purple robe and yellow cape. All the velvet vestments are embroidered with floral and foliar designs of the 1890s genre. In the tradition of nineteenth century (Victorian) “miniaturismo,” many charming glass baubles, reputedly created by the inmates of the Bilibid Prison (according to the prewar–postwar collector Felipe Kleimpell Hidalgo), dot the base of the tableau. There are country folk: a farmer (well –dressed, looks like a prince), his wife, daughter, and a female vendor with a basket on her head, all wearing cheery dresses. Plants and flowers. There are all kinds of animals: dogs, cats, birds, geese, sheep, goats, even antlered deer. There is a “Roman centurion” on a horse between the Cristo and San Dimas, although the horse looks like anything but one. The surface of the base is textured to simulate earth. Overall, it is a very interesting tableau. “Calvario” tableaux (Calvary scenes) were necessary appurtenances of Roman Catholic evangelization and catechesis in the past centuries. They depicted the Crucifixion: the “Cristo Expirante” (dying) or even the “Cristo Moribundo” (dead) Jesus Christ on the cross, his nearest and dearest --- “Mater Dolorosa” (Mary his Sorrowful Mother), “San Juan Evangelista” (Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist), and “Santa Maria Magdalena” (Saint Mary Magdalene) at the foot of the cross. To the faithful, they were daily reminders of the ultimate sacrifice by Jesus Christ. They were the visualizations of “Semana Santa” (Holy Week), “Viernes Santo” (Good Friday), “Las Siete Palabras” (The Seven Last Words), “La Procesion del Entierro” (Burial Procession), and “El Triduo Pascual” (Easter Triduum), all central themes of Roman Catholicism leading to Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, the most central theme of all.

What a charming little poem to go with this ivory fork, another treasure from my Grandfather's house. The box is really old and beat up, a remnant of an elegant lifestyle that sadly does not exist these days. Imagine having a special ivory serving fork to put that slice of lemon in your tea?

My ivory display wedding cake. I wanted to use plenty of texture on this one to show that all ivory doesn't have to be boring! Piped dots on the top, hand-embossed hearts on the middle layer and double-depth stripes on the base.
The Taj Mahal, meaning Crown of the Palace, is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The tomb is the centrepiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall. It is in the list of UNESCO World

St. Anthony with the Christ Child
17th Century
FILIPINO
Ivory with traces of gilding and polychromy. The ivory has yellowed with age.
St. Anthony is shown wearing the habit of the Franciscan order -- the long cassock with the valona (a short capelet) with a raised cowl forming a hood at the back. A rope cincture is tied around his waist. On the saint's right hand, he holds a book (probably a Bible) on which perches a small image of the Christ Child. His left hand is crooked to hold a spray of lilies (a symbol of his chastity and purity) now lost. The saint is shown with a chubby face consistent with early renditions of the saint's image in ivory. The saint also is shown generally bald but with a a wide tonsure which cover his pate three-quarters of the way around his head. In the middle is a bunched forelock. Old losses and repairs.
