This great blue heron was ahead of its time, self isolating on a stump. When I tried to get closer, it took off, walking quickly away to keep a safe distance. Full frame - no crop.

Stay safe, my friends!

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, like or comment on my photos!

Inspired by Chris Packham's 'Sparrowhawk of the Day' feature on his morning webcast / FB Live session - (a real pick me up to start every day), here's a shot of one of my favourite garden visitors.

Many will have seen Sparrowhawk posts from me here on my photostream before. Rarely though, do the perfect combination of wind direction (westerly), decent morning light and being in place on the bedroom balcony at the right time, camera in hand align so perfectly.

I am usually to be found dashing to grab the camera as I glimpse a blur of Sparrowhawk speeding through the sky .... and missing the shot. This time (and we have plenty of that at the moment!), I was in place anticipating a good raptor show in the skies above the house.

Our house sits at the end of a village, on a small escarpment, with a South West facing view over the valley and countryside stretching into the distance.

The sun hits the wooded escarpment, producing thermals and when the westerly breeze blows gently, all kinds of raptors take advantage, with Kestrels, Red Kite, lots of Buzzards and of course the beautiful Sparrowhawk skidding low through the trees and up on a thermal for better view of our bird feeders and a potential meal!!

This is the best view of the action I've had over the last couple of years.

Stay safe everyone and I wish you all some great birding over the weeks to come, whatever your view of the skies around your house happens to be.

Right .... no where's that White-tailed Eagle rumoured to be touring the country with it's mates from the Isle of Wight .. #eyespeeled

Isolating at home can make you go crazy or make you try something new. So i figured since we cant go out and enjoy our favorite hobby i would try some water drop photography. Its my first time so take it easy one me. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. No fancy equipment needed just creativity.

As always, there is a full blog post from last year about Ada Lovelace available at Stuck in Plastic: www.stuckinplastic.com/2019/11/week-48-ada-lovelace/

I'm trying to keep busy during self-isolation and so I made a new nesting box for the many wild birds that visit my garden. Here you can see a possible new owner giving the property a once-over and is obviously taking advantage of the low interest rates on mortgages here in the UK :-)

The "Soap Bubble Nebula" is the common name for the planetary nebula PN G75.5+1.7. This nebula was only discovered by amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich on July 6th, 2008. It was independently confirmed and reported by Keith Quattrocchi and Mel Helm on July 17th, 2008.

PN G75.5+1.7 is situated in the constellation of Cygnus, very near the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888). It is embedded in a large diffuse nebula which, in combination with its low surface magnitude, is the reason it was not discovered until recently.

NGC 6888, also known as the Crescent Nebula, is a cosmic bubble about 25 light-years across, blown by winds from its central, bright, massive star. This image uses narrow band image data that isolates light from hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the wind-blown nebula. The oxygen atoms produce the blue-green hue that seems to enshroud the detailed folds and filaments. Visible within the nebula, NGC 6888's central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136). The star is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun's mass every 10,000 years. The nebula's complex structures are likely the result of this strong wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. Burning fuel at a prodigious rate and near the end of its stellar life this star should ultimately go out with a bang in a spectacular supernova explosion. Found in the nebula rich constellation Cygnus, NGC 6888 is about 5,000 light-years away. (source: APOD)

I decided in 2015 that I wanted to see if I could catch this very faint nebula with my 9.2 cm refractor. I started working on imaging this in 2015, but then I only got 4 images before weather interrupted the imaging sequence. It was only in 2016 that I was able to catch more data of this region to see what would come out. In August 2016 I took for 5 days in a row images of this nebula in H-alpha, OIII and RGB.

During this time of self isolating and quarantine, let's spend time reconnecting with ourselves. Practice some self-care. Thinking about all those who are out working and not able to stay home. Your work is truly appreciated. <3 <3

Applications are now open for the role of ESA-sponsored research medical doctor at Concordia research station in Antarctica for the 2023 winter over season. Do you have a medical degree, an interest in space exploration and the fortitude to spend almost a year in isolation in the world’s largest desert? Apply today for this unique post.

The blank backdrop

Located at the mountain plateau called Dome C in Antarctica, the French-Italian base is one of only three that is inhabited all year long.

Between the extreme altitude – 3233 m above sea level means the crew experience chronic hypobaric hypoxia or lack of oxygen in the brain – four months of total darkness during the winter, and temperatures as low as –80°C, the base is fertile ground to research the effects of isolated, confined, and extreme environments on the human body and mind.

For this reason, each year ESA sponsors a medical doctor to oversee biomedical experiments at the base.

The 2021 winter over doctor, Nick Smith from the UK, is on his way back home after a successful year in Antarctica. Taking his place is Hannes Hagson from Sweden. He arrived with his crew of 12 in early November and will oversee research such as how isolation changes people’s brains, sleep and their immune system.

Summer in December

Concordia is currently hosting the summer season of researchers. About 60 researchers flock to the station to check equipment, set up sensors and run experiments for a few weeks. The last of the summer crew is expected to leave in February, and then the isolation begins. The 13-member crew will spend the next nine months with only each other for company as the sun begins to set, returning after four months.

If you think you have what it takes, apply for the position of ESA research doctor by 21 January 2022.

Good luck to Hannes and the DC 18 crew! Follow Hannes’ year on the Chronicles from Concordia blog.

INSULATOR

The weather has probably deprived this self-made insulator (an electric fence) of its function.

The only image I salvaged from a pretty uneventful trip to Maldon in Essex a few weeks ago. The sunrise was really poor photographically and I nearly didn't take this image as i was in-fact walking back to the car and turned around and saw this composition. I climbed down onto the river bank and set up my tripod and after a few minutes i decided to isolate these two boats. The golden hour was then in full force and the scene had a lovely soft pinky light on it. This colour scheme was further emphasised in the edit to create this overall pastel effect which for me really works on this image.
