This last weekend has been exceptional. The weather has been good, except for a brisk Scandy wind and my mini-orchard is full of insects and blossom, busy pollinating and being pollinated.

Sunday was a special day. I tend to vacillate about dressing, often ending up in the man shed fixing 'things', but that day I dressed first thing in the morning for photos and after changing from my retro dress into skirt and twin set life just carried on ... doing stuff ... until at the end of watching The Deer Hunter late into the night I realised that I'd just spent 15 glorious hours in petticoats. Even more, it marked seven consecutive days wearing nail varnish. Isolating has its benefits.

Isolating (again) in our downstairs level, if I take pictures, they are limited to what I can see from windows and the patio door. So you see the same stairs I like to shoot in the winter. The mood seems appropriate, somehow.

Isolating penguins against the background isn't easy but I managed it with this Macaroni Penguin at Cooper Bay on South Georgia. The name Macaroni was an eighteenth century slang word for a dandy and the name stuck for the penguin after the original meaning had drifted into obscurity. Apparently dandies of this period often wore feathers in their hats. The scientific name (Eudyptes chrysolophus) means fine diver with the golden crest, although there are several other penguins with a golden crest.
