Summer is over, and what a strange summer it has been for so many people around the world. Many people have doubts about what will happen concerning the pandemic, but it is nice to think about the beautiful things this hot season brought us. For the rest of my life I will have memories of those many happy moments. My summer took me to wonderful places that I shared through images and videos with the important people in my life. I like summers because millions of people smile and that is always a beautiful to me.

A panoramic shot from the summit of Sighignola, a peak on the border between Italy and Switzerland.

In the foreground the lights of the Swiss towns overlooking Lake Lugano (the triangular-shaped town of Melide is very recognisable) : in the distance the lights of the Piedmont plain (Italy) and in the background the unmistakable silhouette of mountain Monviso.

The temperature has been well above freezing in recent days, and it’s been raining. The snow is melting fast.

Spring is here, just outside my door!

Nothing more than a pigeon up the top of next door's Silver Birch tree . Took it to see if it could go abstract for SSC this week , the jury is well out on hat one !!

Frosty is back sitting in the twinkling snow falling all around him.

This is the smallest wading bird on the planet, even smaller than a Little Stint. I crawled like a seal across wet sand to get the desired low angle so I wasn't going to let this one go unposted. I took the photograph on Hinchinbrook Island which lies at the entrance of Prince William Sound in Alaska. It is an adult in full breeding plumage and this is probably its final refuelling stop en route to its arctic breeding grounds.

Joensuu is a small town in Finland. It's name translates to: rivermouth or Joe'smouth :-) Sorry about the low resolution. Image got destroyed by some of the post processing apps I used last night :-)

This is one of my nearby, favorite places to spend some time along the river in the fall. We've only had a handful of chilly mornings like this so far this fall.

Thanks to everyone who has taken some time out of their day to visit my photostream over the years. Your kindness is much appreciated.

Our backyard is full of Lady Bugs this year. We have lots of aphids so there is plenty of food for them to feast on. We also have lots of finches too which I suspect are eating the lady bugs.

This is the same place as the earlier photo called Evening Beaver Pond. The angle is different and now you can see (in Large) the beaver lodge. There might even be a beaver (in box on right) in the unfrozen part but you have to look in a really Large blown up version.

Here is a scene from one of the area that resembles a creepy movie scene, of the Southern Bayou region. It was one of the most amazing area I ever photographed, an experience that will stick in my memory forever.

Sempervivum (/sɛmpəˈvaɪvəm/) is a genus of about 40 species of flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, commonly known as houseleeks. Other common names include liveforever (the source of the taxonomical designation Sempervivum, literally "always/forever alive") and hen and chicks, a name shared with plants of other genera as well. They are succulent perennials forming mats composed of tufted leaves in rosettes. In favourable conditions they spread rapidly via offsets, and several species are valued in cultivation as groundcover for dry, sunny locations.

These are just a few of the Sempervivums I have dotted about in the garden/greenhouse . They are a very hardy plant tolerant of a wide range of temperatures so make a good plant to have around .

This is another photo from Pixabay. For some reason, it reminded me of the movie "On Golden Pond." I have made a number of adjustments to the original image in Snapseed and Picasa, including adjusting the contrast, color balance, cropping, and adding a matte.

American Bald Eagle

The American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

The Bald Eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and 1 metric ton (1.1 short tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.

Bald Eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". The adult is mainly brown with a white head and tail. The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are about 25 percent larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.

The Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. The bald eagle appears on its seal. In the late 20th century, it was on the brink of extirpation in the contiguous United States. Populations have since recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. government's list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the contiguous states on June 28, 2007.

ODC-Where I Live Is Known For...

This area of Upstate, NY is known for its beautiful waterfalls and gorges. In fact there's a saying here "ithaca Is Gorges!" It really is!!!

At last, we have finally received a measurable snowfall. It is 7:45 AM, and it looks like we have received 6 inches so far - and the snow continues to fall.

It is eerily silent outside. So quiet in fact - that you can hear that proverbial pin drop.

The animals must be settled into their hidey holes to wait out the storm, so Doc will not need to hurry out to the feeder stations this morning.

Because of the warm weather here in Alaska, bears are still roaming many areas of the state and people have recently been mauled by them. Hopefully the cooler weather and the snow will drive them into their dens.

In this photo you see our trusty old one ton truck blanketed in white, while the temperature sits at 17 degrees F. with no wind.

Hinni canyon is a ravine 15-20 m in depth. This majestic natural monument in Devonian sandstone is unique in Estonia for its depth. No other deep sandstone canyons are known. The canyon is about 200 m long, 6-10 m wide, narrowing quickly to 3 m. Uniqueness is added by the crisscross of fallen trees and a small cave with a spring. According to the lore, the spring water has a treating and rejuvenating effect.

I always had the plan to post more shots of the wonderful Iskanderkul in Tajikistan, but it is already three years ago that I finished my trip through central Asia, and how the world has changed since then.

Beside this shot www.flickr.com/photos/115540984@N02/49221949713/in/photol..., that I posted a long time ago, there were many more.

This image was taken when we left early next morning. The scenery was gorgeous thanks to the light and the haze, and the lake got a wonderful turquoise color.

Iskanderkul is situated in the northwest of Tajikistan, in the Fann-mountains. I am not sure if it was named after Alexander the great, the stories are somewhat vague on this matter, but what is sure is that the dacha of the Tajik president is situated at the east end of the lake.

We spent two days at this lake, and although this scenery is fantastic it took me a lot of pictures to capture its grandness. Not only the lake but the surrounding mountains are so stunning you don't know where to look all the time. Enjoy!

20 September 2019 I came back from my journey over a part of the Silk Road to and through Central Asia. 4 months of traveling through 14 countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran) before I flew home from Teheran. An impressive journey in countries that are extremely beautiful, with lovely and welcoming people and diverse cultures and history.

Intense traveling with more than 20000 kilometers in our mobile home on sometimes roads that hardly could be called that way. We saw many villages and cities (some wonderful, others very ugly), countries that are transforming from the old Soviet era into something more related to older cultures and the way people live, often funded by oil readily available around the Caspian sea. We saw the amazing mountains south of the Black Sea, the wonderful Caucasus, and the high mountains in the far east close to China with peaks over 7000 meter, and not to forget the (Bulgarian) Alps!

We crossed the great steppe of Kazakhstan. a drive of at least 5000 km, the remnants of lake Aral, once one of the biggest lakes of the world, saw a rocket launch from Baikonur (this little part is Russian owned), we crossed many high mountains passes, and drove the breathtaking canyon that comes from the Pamir, beginning at ca 4500 meter, and going down for ca. 400km to an altitude of 1300 meter, driving for 100's of kilometers along the Afghan border.

And then the numerous lakes with all sorts of different colors from deep cobalt blue to turquoise, and one rare spectacle in Turkmenistan where a gas crater is burning already for more than 40 years. And finally and certainly not the least to mention an enormous amount of wonderful, hospitable and welcoming people. The woman often dressed in wonderful dresses, and bringing a lot of color in the streets of almost of all countries we visited.

Last year I swapped some home grown tomato plants for a plant I've never grown in my garden, Teasel. I'm pleased to say several teasel were given to me and once they flowered they where enjoyed by lots of insects especially bees.
