No matter how many times I see the Milky Way like this, it's always an inspiring sight. The dark Coal Sack Nebula is now visible immediately below the Southern Cross, and directly above the foreshore house lights, the Large Magellanic Cloud is a standout from the Milky Way.

A little star trail I took out at Cana Island before I left for Alaska. One of my favorite places to shoot and for good reason. I will admit...it took me longer than it should have to get my Lume Panel to light this nice and evenly like this but it worked out pretty well in the end.

Last one from Seven Mile Beach on Sat'dy night - FInally got my head around using 'Starry Landscape Stacker' with this one ... getting rid of the hot pixels was the hard bit (it was quite a warm night which didn't help - don't get them in winter so much).
12 raw frames developed in DxO PhotoLab 6 exported as .dng files again, stacked in Starry Landscape Stacker (Mac) brief stop over in Color Efex Pro 5 for well ... colour, stop over in Topaz Photo AI for some pixel smoothing and Edge enhancing and a final stop back in PhotoLab.

Puerto Montt is a port city and commune in southern Chile, located at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound in the Llanquihue Province, Los Lagos Region, 1,055 km to the south of the capital, Santiago. The commune spans an area of 1,673 km2 (646 sq mi) and had a population of 238.455 in 2012. Founded as late as 1853 during the German colonization of southern Chile, Puerto Montt soon outgrew older neighboring cities due to its strategic position at the southern end of the Chilean Central Valley being a gateway city into Chiloé Archipelago, Llanquihue Lake and Western Patagonia.
Puerto Montt has gained renown and grown significantly due to the rise of Chile as the second largest salmon producer of the world during the 1990s and 2000s. The city's cultural heritage mixes elements of Chiloé culture with German heritage although the city has attracted a significant number of newcomers from all over Chile in the last 30 years due to employment opportunities from salmon fish farms and related industries.
Going into a black cave in the wee hours with the amplified sounds of the ocean (and a few million mozzies finding you quite intereresting) can be uhh inimidating to say the least.
Add the fact that it's a bit of an iconic location that your determined to do your best on, and you can find yourself arguing out loud with the mozzies and yourself in a cave alone in the dark.
Technically from my side of the lens I muffed this one well and truly and spent the day yesterday determined just to leave it alone and let it 'sit' while I gave it the time in my head to sort itself out.
Glad I did now - this isn't the image I was hoping for but, for my first attempt at something like this I'm happy to share the view.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do?

A wider pre-sunrise view of the planetary lineup that I photographed last week. Most of Orion is now visible as it rises. The three stars forming a line in his belt lead to Venus after bypassing Aldebaran in Taurus, and Mercury sitting just above the clouds. The Pleiades are visible a little further on. The waning crescent moon is very overexposed but beyond it, Mars and then Jupiter are visible.

I 'left' this stack alone for a day to let the process gel a bit in my head ... a lot simpler this time round.
My favourite for the day - "blue hour" is such a special time for some reason.

Taken with the K1 and the fabulous IRIX 150mm macro lens
I just bought an Irix 15mm f2.4 to see how it handles night shots. This is the first attempt. I did not have the time to travel to a dark location so this image was taken only about 10km out of Toowoomba City. The light pollution was terrible and it was still astronomical twilight. It seems to be ok but I think the 25 second exposure time is a bit long - if the elongated stars are trailing and not distortion or bad focusing. Well learning curve coming up - see how it goes. I took some day shots and they were great but massive vignetting. However I downloaded the lightroom irix lens profile from the irix website and it corrects it perfectly.
