Meu medo é esquecer. Esquecer as coisas pelas quais passei, as lições que aprendi, esquecer aqueles que amo. E, acima de tudo, temo esquecer meus valores, perder minha ideologia e matar minha causa.

Pitot Tube
This tubular device was invented by French hydraulic engineer Henri Pitot (1695-1771) based upon his study of the flow of water in rivers and canals. Called a "Pitot tube," this pressure measuring instrument senses the velocity of a fluid (such as air) flowing past a fixed point. The Pitot tube points directly into the airflow, allowing total air pressure to be measured. At the same time, ambient air pressure is measured using static ports on the sides of the fuselage. Instruments compare the two pressures and thereby determine the indicated airspeed of the aircraft, which is displayed to the pilot via the airspeed indicator in the cockpit.
History of the F-106A "Delta Dart"
First manufactured in 1959, the F-106A was developed to be an all-weather interceptor against Soviet attacks. These aircraft were equipped with the MA-1 system, which took control of the aircraft in order to maintain proper altitude, attack position, and fire missiles. The MA-1 system could break the aircraft off from attack runs, come back to the vicinity of its base, and return control to the pilot for landing. Production of these aircraft ended in 1960 after 277 had been built.
The F-106A "Delta Dart" at Hill Air Force Base
In the late 1950s, the Ogden Air Materiel Area performed maintenance, supply support, and modifications on the F-106 aircraft weapon system.
The F-106A on display was manufactured in 1959, and after spending some time at the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center in Arizona, it transferred to a base in Illinois where it was converted to a QF-106 target drone. In 1998, the aircraft returned to Arizona as one of the last six flying Delta Darts. In 2002, the Hill Aerospace Museum acquired the aircraft and restored it for display.
Interesting Fact
In 1959, the F-106 set a world speed record at 1,525 mph!

Envision, Invent, Inspire: MIT Media Lab's Tangible Media Lab Presents, Part II
2:40 pm - 3:40 pm MDT on Sunday, June 30, 2013
Three MIT Ph.D. candidates present their research. Daniel Leithinger proposes that information can be conveyed by changing the shape and material properties of physical objects. His actuated tabletop display Relief renders and animates shapes, which users can touch and deform with their hands. Xiao Xiao is interested in how we can interact with information the way we interact with music, not with the abstract content perceived consciously and intellectually but as moving, visceral experiences. She will present MirrorFugue, an interface for interaction with remote and recorded piano performances that viscerally evokes the presence of pianist. Lining Yao will demonstrate that the physical world can be programmed, diminished, or digitally fabricated for people to see, touch, and feel in new ways. Think: whoever starts to talk will be focused and the others around will be blurred in real life.

Okay, so you know that recent Michigan trip I keep mentioning? It was a different sort of trip than usual, and I'm going to present it in an unusual way. We took the trip as part of a genealogical exploration of one of my ancestral lines, so for the next couple of weeks, I'll be talking a lot about where I originate and some of the people who produced me. But I'll start with a 30-plus-year-old picture of a batch of people who have little to do with Michigan.
These are the folks who actually raised me. I don't like using my real identity on the internet, so I won't tell you their full names. My little play on the name of a movie star gunslinger has worked well enough as a fake flickr surname, though, so that's what I'll call these people. This is a photo of the Midwestwood family, taken in 1983 or '84 for a church directory, I think. The parents, Becky and Milton, sit in the middle with the baby on their lap. The middle kid stands over on the left, looking a little creepy. And the big-haired blond kid standing off to the right with an expression stuck somewhere between confusion and annoyance is the ten-year-old version of me, Clint Midwestwood, oldest of the Midwestwood children.
There's a fun fact about that family I've alluded to several times in the past: only three of the five people in this image are related by birth. That dark haired kid on the left is the only child born to Milton and Becky to make it out of the hospital. (There were three other babies who didn't live longer than a day.) The other two kids, me and the little guy, were both adopted as infants. And it only gets more complicated from there, as that baby and I are genetically related, too. Biologically, the kid is the child of one of my biological sisters, who gave birth to him when she was 16. She figured since my parents already had one her brothers, they might as well have her son, too. I used to have a lot of fun with family pictures by pointing out that the only person I actually share any genes with here is the black kid.
But there's a down side to all this for somebody who likes to compartmentalize things the way I do. Thanks to my wife, who is really good at researching things, I've developed an interest in genealogy. But this leads directly into the question of which genealogical line I follow. I've got two options giving me twice as many ancestors as everybody else. I can follow the line of the Midwestwoods, the people who raised me and from whom the law says I originate. Or I can follow the genetic line that leads to a bunch of people with names like Prout or Frazier or Goudreau or, if you can believe it, Waubojeeg.
At one point in the recent Michigan trip, Robin asked me which line I felt the greater connection to. That's sort of a difficult question to answer, as it hints at a lot of nurture-nature fights. My personal experience tells me those fights mostly wind up a draw, and neither really dominates. I consider both lines "real." They're just real in different ways. Though I'm not genetically related to the people in this photo, Milton and Becky are my real and true parents, and I've never been tempted to think otherwise. And since my parents' ancestral lines made them who they are and my parents made me who I am, I am as much a product of their lines as they are. But the physical stuff that embodies me, the blood and bones and tendency for cancer and bouts of depression and fuzzy hair, that comes from a mix of Michiganders and Mississippians. My love of writing and photography and my urge to over-analyze things probably comes from there, too. So that line's as real as the other.
The genetic line is the one I'll explore in this set, focusing on the lineage of my biological mother. She came from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, as did practically every one of my forebears in that line going back at least 300 years. Here's a few of their stories.
Avoir 2 ailerons : configuration twinzer.
Avoir 3 ailerons : configuration thruster.
Avoir 4 ailerons : configuration quad.

A very rough tracing sketch where I had to invent many of the details -- like the odd eyes and nose --because I couldn't find them in the photo, which shows my rank beginner status in drawing and ignorance of anatomy. Even though this doesn't look quite right I've decided to show it anyway, for now, simply as another example so far of my nondoodling fumbling around with iPad art apps. I might replace it with an improved version or, more likely, just delete it in a few days. You can see why I often retreat to patterns or abstract forms that don't have to resemble anything accurately.
By the way, that glass of beer is just as big in the photograph.
Here's the flickr photo my drawing is somewhat based on (my apologies to the photographer for not doing justice to his wonderful picture): www.flickr.com/photos/sashimanek/42102520/
I spend many hours browsing through flickr and looking again and again at my many favorites, which include some amazingly good line drawings. So if you want to see how good digital drawing can be, one place you can start is to look is at my flickr Favorites. For example, don't miss the drawings of Tom Pokinko and of Julio Giacomelli. Then look at their other drawings and the flickr groups linked to their drawings. I should put together some galleries of my favorite flickr drawings.
