Egyptian Goose - Alopochen Aegyptiacus

Once common along the entire Nile valley and regarded as sacred in ancient times, the Egyptian Goose is no longer an easy bird to see in the country from which it takes its name, as it is largely confined to upper Egypt. It is, however, widespread and common throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with introduced populations firmly established in England, Holland, Belgium and France. Concerns over conflict with native species has led to restrictions on keeping them in Britain and Europe.

This distinctive small goose is a member of the shelduck family. In the wild it is invariably found in pairs or family parties, while flocks of 50 or more can be found after the breeding season. The sexes are similar: both have a conspicuous chestnut patch encircling the eyes, giving them a somewhat piratical appearance, while the brilliant white forewing is obvious when they fly.

The UK Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 came into force on Sunday 1st December. The Order implements requirements contained in EU Regulation 1143/2014 on Invasive Alien Species, which sets out rules to prevent and minimise the impact of the introduction and spread of non-native animals and plants across the EU. The Order makes it an offence, amongst other things, to import, keep, sell, transport, breed or release into the environment, any of the listed plants and animals. Invasive alien waterfowl currently covered by this Order are Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Ducks Oxyura jamaicensis.

Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths . An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female 'digests' the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Shot was taken with a 100mm macro lens. NSW, Australia

So called because of the formal layout of the garden at Loseley Hall and the modern sculptures in the background which seem to be figures meeting.

The smallest of the four species of the genus Piranga that breed north of Mexico, it is a long-distance Neotropical migrant, annually making the journey between northwestern South America and the eastern United States and southern Canada.

This tanager is monogamous and aggressively territorial throughout its range. It is largely insectivorous, foraging heavily on the larvae of Lepidoptera and a variety of adult insects by hovering and gleaning.

Long-tailed Tits need no introduction; if your garden is invaded by a throng of extremely cute and chatty ping-pong balls on sticks, youโ€™ll know about it! Listen out for their distinctive shrill calls, interspersed with lower-pitched chattering. (BTO).

My thanks to anyone who views, faves or comments on any of my photos. It is much appreciated.

Here Rags and Caithlin are confirming their friendship after the ordeal, while Bastian is looking. :)

The "bringing together" of Bastian and the Somalis have been completed according to plan and in relative harmony - i.e with a minimum of hissing and growling and no serious fighting. They don't love each other, but they can be in the same room - well done for adult cats aged 5 to 8ยฝ...

Hope you are having a good one today? While we are waiting for a tulip season here in Chicago, as a proper spring introduction, I will leave you with some prairie flowers! What do you think?

Having got within a long lens range of a few of these Red Legged Partridge in the UK, they have simply darted for cover. On our hike in Madeira we came across four or five that were unbelievably tame. As can be seen I was using a 24-70mm lens and I didn't need to crop this one. My only issue was that they clambered over and around the rockery at great pace.

We came across these partridge at a height of around 5,000 feet and apart from a couple of Chaffinch they were the only birds we encountered all day. Apparently the Red Legged Partridge are a recent introduction to the island of Madeira.

Stella is introduced to Daisy - showed appropriate respect for the older dog for all of a day. Then puppy teeth and playtime needs took over, and well, Daisy likes to have lots of time away from the puppy!

The dramatic Abbey ruins at Fountains are the largest monastic ruins in the country. The Abbey, which is near Ripon in North Yorkshire, was founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks from St Maryโ€™s in York seeking to live a devout and simple lifestyle. Within three years the little settlement at Fountains had been admitted to the austere Cistercian Order and with that came an important development โ€“ the introduction of the Cistercian system of lay brothers.

The lay brothers relieved the monks from routine jobs, giving them more time to dedicate to God. It was because of the lay brothers that Fountains became so wealthy through wool production, lead mining, cattle rearing, horse breeding and stone quarrying.

The Abbey was abruptly closed down in 1539 in the Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by Henry VIII, and the abbot, prior and monks were sent away with pensions.

The estate was sold by the Crown to a merchant, Sir Richard Gresham. It remained in private hands until the 1960s. The National Trust bought the estate from the West Riding County Council in 1983.

The birds are not getting much shut eye these days with the recent introduction of a half hourly passenger service between Ashington and Newcastle. Previously they were disturbed only by the infrequent biomass trains heading to or from Lynemouth Power Station. They take to the air again as GBRf Class 60 No. 60056 Great Gable crosses North Seaton Viaduct over the River Wansbeck at sunset with another load of biomass from Tyne Dock on 15 January 2025.

BRUNO: "It is a small world! Gigi, does Ellie mean you when she talks about a pink elephant?"

GIGI: "I am not quite sure, but it could be..."

BRUNO: "Only how many elephants with the name Gigi will there be? That will certainly mean you... "

Bร‰LA: "But nobody knows me! I prefer to remain inconspicuous..."

BRUNO: "But you are being introduced... - Dear friends, this little bear is Bรฉla and he is still a very young bear, while Gigi has been living here for a while! But of the three of us, I am definitely the oldest..."

Bร‰LA: "Good day to you, dear friends of Bruno!"

BRUNO: "Sigh! Dear Bรฉla, the ladies have the right of way... It means Ladies first."

Bร‰LA: "First come, first served."

GIGI: "Can I now? Dear distant cousin Ellie and dear bearish friends of Bruno, I wish you all the love in the world!"

This amazing gentleman Dale has the car in the carport. He loves his MGA and used to drive it and I think he may take it around the block a time or two. Dale has Cerebral Palsy, doctors told his mother that he had a very short mortality rate. His selfish mother gave him up. Nothing can stop this 78 year old man. He worked for Florida Department of Transportation, he was an inspector for signs, reflectors, lighting. He wanted to take me for a ride, not wanting to hurt his feelings, I said next time. Dale lives alone and I thank the family who helps when needed. My Easter touched my heart ๐Ÿ’œ

The 1991 season marked the introduction of the FIAโ€™s new, and controversial, 3.5 Litre Formula which replaced the highly successful Group C category that had been used in the World Sports Car Championship since 1982. However, due to a small number of entries in the new 3.5 litre formula heavily penalised Group C cars were allowed participate in the newly created C2 category for the 1991 season but Jaguar participated in the new formula.

To comply with the new regulations Jaguar produced an all-new car, the XJR-14. It was designed by Ross Brawn and John Piper, and was built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR).[1] In the past, TWR's Jaguars had been designed under the direction of Tony Southgate, while Brawn worked with a large design staff (12 according to John Piper); a paradigm shift (albeit small) in its own right and reflective of Brawn's Formula One background.

The abandonment of the Group C fuel consumption regulations meant a change in aerodynamic design philosophy. Coupled that with vastly different packaging requirements for a small, light, normally aspirated engine meant that concerns over drag became a secondary requirement to downforce. The new design, lower kerb weight of 750 kg (1,653 lb) and higher downforce levels meant that the XJR-14 was a lot faster in corners compared to the previous Group C front runners.
