The sun-god Inti was one of the Inca Empire's most important gods. Inti Raymi, the Festival of the Sun, takes place at the summer solstice, and was being celebrated in Cusco the week I was there.
The Inti Raymi festival in Peru is a feast of the Sun God and Pachamama (Mother Earth), the main Gods of the Inca civilization. These Gods were considered to be the creators of all that exists. They rule over the destiny of mankind and the universe!
This Inca festival of Inti Raymi is the most luxurious, large, and colorful celebration to be performed in Cusco as it was originally dedicated to an Incan ruler, considered to be a demigod for his people.

Tarpuntay! You who know how to nourish the sacred wakas (shrines), prepare the offering of a llama. Make certain that it is the youngest and finest animal from the herds of the Sun god which are kept in the Chitapanpa ... Do it now!

Waminkas! Choose a young llama! It must be the blackest of all. Carry it to the highest part of the altar.

Lord of the universe! Creator of the world who is everywhere! Here we are, your priests from the sacred city of Cusco, ready to offer you the sacrifice of this young black llama from your flocks ... Receive it, lord, oh Sun god, and through this sacrifice show us your merciful will!

Look! Look! The lord of omens is answering us! Oh Sun god, reveal your will to the priests of your Empire of the Four Regions ... Let them be favourable, and full of hope and life!

I think these days the sacrifice is symbolically enacted.

de ahĆ las calles mĆ”s importantes
la inca llevaban afuera en forma
de estrella en el imperio
La colocaciĆ³n en la montaƱa - Sacsahuaman
con esto la forma y la situaciĆ³n de
Sacsahuaman forma la cabeza del puma
puedo presentarme,
el edificio de una torre nivelada,
su fundamento aquĆ debe ser visto,
un ojo de la cabeza que reposa
al lado debĆa representar...
de una otra manera de visibilidad,
si la boca del puma puede haber sido
representada sin embargo tambiƩn con eso.

This is a picture I took back in 1984 while I was living in Cusco, Peru, for one year as an exchange student. I chose not to dust the slides (oops, mistake!) so, well, they're kind of dusty!
My class used to run up the hill to Saqsayhuaman to exercise, but we were usually the only people here. This photo was taken during the Festival of the Sun God, Inti Raymi... all done in the Quechua language. It was very interesting... a festival depicting an Incan ritual.
