Scanned Article - Hot Doc Issue 84 September 2015

Another happy moment for me. My interview was published in daily THE SUN Sunday's magazine Trendz. here, is the scanned version of this magazine for you guys.

ROSMAN, NC (January 19, 2015): On Monday night, January 19, Rosman High School celebrated its 50th annual Miss Bengal pageant. There couldn't be a better night for celebrating passionate students and future leaders in our schools.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”

Rosman High School offers numerous programs targeting character education, both as part the curriculum and through clubs and service opportunities. The 50-year history of the Miss Bengal Pageant is one way Rosman High has reinforced the importance of character. The pageant has long taken place on the Monday night of semester break (with a Saturday snow date) for a variety of reasons.

Participants are evaluated on their talent, poise, future plans, and comportment: many of the things colleges and employers look for in our graduates, and their future students or employees.

This year's participants were:

Abby Buchanan ('18)

Blakely Owen ('16)

Madison Gingrich ('15)

Emma Henderson ('18)

Alexandria Galloway ('16)

Olivia Bishop ('16)

Robin Crowe ('17)

Jacey Voris ('15)

Claire Harris ('15)

Cassidy Knye ('16)

Madison Allen ('18)

Megan Brightwell ('16)

Shaylon Combs ('16)

Carli Batson ('15)

Hayleigh Mann ('15)

These highly-committed students, and many attendees, keep very busy schedules with school and extracurriculars, so the night is kept free for this special event, and tickets sell out weeks in advance.

The opening introduction and crowning were performed by Miss Bengal 2014, senior Hannah Reese. Former “Bengal” winners Loretta Sanders, Emily Reese Jones, Missy West, and Ashley Harris all emceed portions of the evening, from interviews and school dress, to the talent and evening gown competitions. Past winners Ashleigh Jamerson (Bengal ’12) and Hannah Reese performed talent at the intermissions as well.

RHS principal Donivan Edwards noted that, with a teacher workday scheduled before and after, students and staff had the run of the stage and school, setting up the elaborate stage design. Tammy Hall, teacher and pageant organizer, further explained how “Bengal” fits into Rosman High’s vision for character:

“I truly believe that Bengal is a very positive activity for the young women at Rosman High School. Bengal promotes community service, it builds character and confidence, and it allows students to reflect on who they are and what is important to them. The girls get to form relationships with people that they may not normally get to spend time with and they get to share their talent with everyone. Additionally, it provides a scholarship to the winner if they further their education after high school.

“I believe that Bengal does exactly what Mr. King was talking about in the quote mentioned above.”

The panel of judges included Dustin Cox, Jeremy Gibbs, Melody Gorman, Judy Edwards, and Tammy Reeves Duffy.

On the same night, RHS students also led the way during MLK activities centered around Brevard College. Rosman Middle and High chorus teacher Grayson Barton shared that Anna Carrillo (RHS ’16) and Casey Mesaeh (RHS ’15) both sang at Brevard College's MLK Celebration on Monday, January 19, at the Porter Center: “It was a big performance for them, and they both did an outstanding job!”

Peyton Manning being interviewed after his Pro-Am round on Wednesday with Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth at the 2018 Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

I took an Ansco Shur-Shot Jr. camera with me out on the course this year. I only got 8 shots but I was determined to get one of Peyton. I'm pretty sure I was the only one to shoot film.

The Jr. is a late 1940s box cam and was not really meant for photojournalism. I was trying to keep one eye on Peyton while my other eye was trying to frame the shot through a small half-inch mirror. Also, I was trying to hold my breath as the shutter speed is a blazing 1/30th of a second.

Note, people look at you funny when you hold a little black box and point it at them.

interview with Emblem3 @ São Paulo, Brazil

Hardeep Singh Puri, one of India's most outstanding diplomats who long played a key role for his country on the world's high tables, bids farewell Thursday to the Indian Foreign Service after 39 years.

"All that I can tell you is that I enjoyed every minute of this long innings," said Puri, India's permanent representative at the UN for the last four years, who in a manner of speaking was born into diplomacy.

"I did not join the ministry of external affairs in 1974, as the record shows. I actually was born into the ministry because my father was also a civil servant," he quipped in an interview with IANS from New York.

"I have witnessed at close quarters the kind of transformation that has taken place" in the "young service of a young country" since independence in 1947, said Puri, a Delhi University alumni who briefly worked as a lecturer at Delhi's St. Stephen's College.

He recalled how back in 1956 he, as a four-year-old boy, and a younger brother just a few months old, travelled with his parents first by train to Mumbai and then by ship to Naples on their way to Belgrade, where his diplomat father had been posted.

"We were still on the high seas when my father received a telegram saying that he had been diverted from Belgrade to Bonn," Puri said illustrating how Indian diplomats then undertook arduous long journeys to take postings with no provision for children's education or medical coverage.

As his father was posted in places where there was no English language education, Puri and his brother studied in boarding schools in India and "did very well in spite of all that" and qualified for the foreign service. Puri hasn't really looked back since then.

"So I really leave with a sense of great satisfaction - both professional and personal," said Puri, commending a career in the Indian Foreign Service to aspiring young professionals for "the sheer enormity, the sheer breadth of experience" and the "fantastic opportunity" that it provides.

The next chapter in the life of the veteran diplomat, who has served as India's permanent representative in both Geneva and New York, literally begins with a book that he plans to pen come March after a few months of "total switch-off."

The first draft of his book on the Doctrine of Responsibility and on Libya should be out by May, said Puri voicing his belief that "a book is either written in one go or not written at all."
