Completed stitched handkerchiefs & hand-written notes by craftivists for M&S board members & other VIPs to be wrapped and ribboned to hand over as gi]fts at the AGM on Tuesday 7th July 2015.
Press Release: Craftivist campaign launches after survey shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid a Living Wage
The Craftivist Collective is joining forces with ShareAction’s AGM Army this summer to press UK retailers to pay a Living Wage. The campaigners are coordinating a series of “stitch-ins” at branches of Marks & Spencers across the UK, for crafters to sew hand-made messages onto M&S handkerchiefs, to be delivered to the board, celebrity endorsers, and major shareholders of the British retail giant at its annual general meeting at Wembley Stadium on July 7th.
An online poll shows 17 percent of British shoppers would shop more often at Marks & Spencers if it paid staff a Living Wage. (Source: Opinium survey, 12th-16th June 2015, based on 2002 online interviews across the UK).
The first “stitch-in” will take place on June 22 in London at 6:30 pm outside the Marks & Spencers on Liverpool Road, N1 0PR. Another “stitch-in” is scheduled for June 23 in Cardiff, another in Brighton on June 29, and another in Milton Keynes 30th. There will also be stitch-ins in Warrington, Lincoln, and Birmingham amongst others.
The idea of the “stitch-ins” is to show M&S that in addition to major shareholders with billions of pounds under management, its core customer base is also fully engaged and supportive on the issue of the Living Wage, and that they expect the company to show leadership on this basic fairness issue.
Each unique hand-stitched hanky encourages board directors of M&S to commit to paying the Living Wage of £9.15 in London and £7.85 across the UK to all staff. This is a part of ShareAction’s campaign in partnership with Citizens UK to achieve the Living Wage across the FTSE 100 through shareholder activism. Nearly a quarter of FTSE 100 companies have now accredited with the Living Wage Foundation, but no high street retailer has yet signed up.
ShareAction has organised AGM questions on the Living Wage at more than 20 company AGMs so far this year. ShareAction is simultaneously mobilising an Investor Collaborative for the Living Wage made up of institutional shareholders with billions of pounds in British companies, including asset managers, pension funds, charity and faith investors. These large shareholders have written in 2015 to all of the FTSE 100, including M&S, in support of the Living Wage.
Crafters will be giving M&S handkerchiefs with personalised positive messages stitched into them to all 14 board members of M&S, as well as to its largest shareholders, and to the 2014 celebrities who feature in the company’s ad campaign: Annie Lennox, Emma Thompson, Alex Wek, Rita Ora, Dowreen Lawrence, Lulu Kennedy, and Rachel Khoo.
They will also be handing out 250 special handkerchief craft kits with a Living Wage message printed on them to shareholders at the company’s Annual General Meeting, so that shareholders can stitch too, to encourage themselves to support the Living Wage. These kits include an ethical hanky, needle and thread, instructions, and a briefing note on investment risk.
M&S Chief Executive Marc Bolland is paid £2.1million a year. Last year, his company refused to consider a Living Wage at its Annual General Meeting. Later, at a meeting with campaigners, the company again refused to consider paying the Living Wage.
Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective, said: “Marks & Spencer is supposed to be a company with solid values threaded through all that they do, which include paying your workers fairly. We’re sending the board and shareholders these carefully hand-stitched handkerchiefs to encourage the company not to ‘blow’ their chance to support life-changing decisions.”
Catherine Howarth, Chief Executive of ShareAction says: “This craftivist initiative at the M&S AGM is nothing to 'sniff at'. Sarah and her amazing stitchers are devoting hours to creating gifts the M&S board we hope will treasure and remember forever. People adore M&S but they want to see the company step up and become a Living Wage employer. The many big shareholders backing this call know it makes business sense as well as being the right thing to do.”

It's the big day and I wanted to look pulled together but not stuffy. Send positive vibes my way at 2:30 CST!
Q1: Why did you start label?
A1: upitup records started out in 2003 as the musical baby of a few guys from rome (italy) and stuttgart (germany) who met each others during a student-exchange. we initially just wanted to make our sounds accessible to the public. the idea was to create an open platform for sharing ideas and staying/getting in contact with people. until now, upitup remains completely uninfected by commercial interests.
Q2: Why is the label called Upitup? What's behind the name of the label?
A2: the slogan "upitup" can be seen as a battlecry of digital culture . unless you "up something up to the network", it stays where it is, unshared (in your brain, on your pc etc.). to "up it up" equally means to "go for it", to "make it hot".
Q3: What tune/genre has label released?
A3: upitup has released mostly electronic music. in terms of genres - phew - many... acid rap, future polka, hobby house/jewish disco, bump 'n' bass... just to name a few...
Q4: What do you think the main difference between Net Label to Real Label?
A4: with a non-commercial netlabel you are not bound to release economically promising stuff. you can virtually put out anything without running the risk of going under. the only thing you have to pay for when running a netlabel is webspace. there are a lot of factors that make you much more flexible than a commercial label.
Q5: What do you think of Radiohead's online album, his experiment, and result?
A5: concerning the band's popularity, it was clear that the concept would work out. this doesn't reflect the situation of musicians that were not massively promoted by labels before. in these dimensions it doesn't make a lot of difference whether people pay a dollar just for one song or for the whole album, so the conclusions that can be drawn by political or economical respects remain exclusive to those that have already been promoted by traditional methods. as far as i know they are now selling the album as a nicely designed digipack with lots of gadgets included. it would be interesting to investigate the importance of such artifacts to the consumer compared to a purely digital product.
Q6: What do you think the music industry become in the future?
A6: if the majors want to stick to selling decomposing digital rights managed compact discs at profit margins that lost touch with reality, we kiss their fat asses goodbye. anyway, they won't be able to keep up their strategies since nowadays the real bucks are made with playback technology - and content of course. obviously in this system the musician will take the last place again…
Q7: What is the most important thing about Net Label?
A7: netlabels helped to put a different view on sharing digital files and music distribution. most netlabels don't provide solutions for the future of the music industry, but all of them are aware that digital sound and the internet are having a huge impact on society, art and economy. netlabels are just anarchically surfing on the wave of this power.
Q8: What is the pleasure of the management of Net Label? A8: see above
Q9: What's the next step for you and label?
A9: make the djs happy and release some funky ass vinyl records.
Q10: Please send a message for Japanese Music Fans!
A10: こんにちは日本! if you make electronic music, send us your demo - if you like electronic music, visit our page and drop us a message! 会う希望 @ upitup.com

Another happy moment for me. My interview was published in daily THE SUN Sunday's magazine Trendz. here, is the scanned version of this magazine for you guys.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientist John Hubbe is interviewed by a local reporter about the Burning Biomass Observation Project (BBOP) campaign. Hubbe manages the G-1 payload and other aircraft payloads used by the ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) for airborne research.
From June to October 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility deployed the G-1 research aircraft above wildfires in the U.S. Pacific Northwest region, near Little Rock, Arkansas and in the vicinity of Memphis, Tennessee, as part of the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP). The aircraft flew through smoke plumes from forest fires and agricultural field burns—types of “burning biomasses”—to measure various properties of aerosol particles soon after they form and as they change over time.

Canal+, programma L’effet Papillon – uitzending 24 maart a.s. Eind maart hoop ik een Youtube te kunnen plaatsen op mijn website; www.marcelzwoferink.nl
