Under Secretary Jacobs and Professor Dash Moore participated in a fireside chat:

Jacobs: "You mentioned in the 30's and 40's, American society was often hostile and suspicious of American Jews and that many if not most had not met someone who was Jewish. Similarly, many Jews grew up in very insular environments even if they had friends outside of the those communities. And so, I'm wondering if you can expand on how Jewish service members navigated this kind of uncertainty, having to prove themselves both individually, but also to their new colleagues and fellow service members?”

Dash Moore: "Well, it really depended upon who the person was and where they came from. Sometimes the struggles were out in the open as it is in the Steinfeld example. But sometimes they were also internal. One of the people whose correspondents I looked at and they wrote letters back in those days which is really wonderful in terms of resources, and you have some of them outside here which is great. Arthur Goran writes home to his parents he has enlisted, he's 18 and he they haven't even started basic training he's in New Jersey in the camp. He writes home, "The bugle blew and your son,”…he didn’t have his uniform yet, “got up and immediately marched off to the mess hall” and there was your typical American breakfast. There was cereal and milk and coffee and orange juice and eggs with...ham. And Goran had never eaten out, he ate at home and his mother had a kosher home. And he never really thought about that and so he's looking at the ham and he's trying to figure out well what do I do I eat it, or do I not eat it? And he decides, well it's a long time to lunch and we're going to have a lot of things we're going to have to do and so he starts to eat the ham and eggs, but he washes it down with the coffee and he writes to his parents, “I ate it the way you would in aspirin”, you know just sort of forcing himself".

"But now what's going on here is really so interesting because none of the other recruits sitting around that table would have had any idea that he was struggling to eat the ham, eggs, and that is sort of symbolic of the way in which he was internalizing his Jewishness. Some things now you know you don't say, and I think that's one way in which people coped".

After nearly 60 years of having a constitution which promises a dream where caste-based discrimination belongs to a distant past, we still witness the most gruesome and barbaric incidents of atrocities on dalits. In 2006, an entire dalit family in Khairlanji was murdered and the women raped. This incident shockingly took place in full public view, with the connivance of hundreds of onlookers. Their only crime was that they had dared to be educated and break the shackles of an exploitative caste order. Two years later, 6 people have been sentenced to death, and two with life imprisonment. The caste dimension of this incident was always clearly evident, and yet the guilty were charged under the IPC, and not under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. This attempt to sanitize the brutality of its casteist intent belies any claim of honestly in dealing with the entrenched casteism in society. .

Khairlanji is most unfortunately not an aberration or an isolated incident. Caste-based discrimination and caste atrocities are a chilling reality in every part of the country. Just to remember some of the cases reported in 2008 alone: In a bizarre New Year Eve honour killing, an Indian father set fire to his daughters home in the USA killing his pregnant daughter, son-in-law and their three year old son, because he could not bear the fact that she had married a lower caste immigrant. In January, the eye of a dalit youth in Maharashtras Nanded district. was gouged out and acid from a car battery poured into it, simply for eloping with a minor girl belonging to the upper caste Marathas. In Jan, a brahmin priest in Kanpur abused and beat up a dalit and his three friends on Tuesday when the latter tried to enter the famous Mahadev temple to offer prayers. In Feb, the owner of a sweets shop pushed his dalit employee into a large pot of boilinIg oil, resulting in his death, after the man refused to work for him in Uttar Pradeshs Etawah district. In Oct, a dalit woman committed suicide in front of the Betul district Collectorate, when no action was taken the sarpanchs son, who had raped her twice. These are just some of the incidents of caste brutalities. .

Even in UP, where Mayawatis victory sharpened the aspirations of dalits for democracy and empowerment, dalits continue to bear the brunt of casteist assaults and atrocities. We have not forgotten how a young dalit student, Chakrasen was murdered in Pratapgarh after he got admission into an engineering college. .

He is fulfilling his jatigat kartavya (caste obligation). thats what the President of the BSP Pratapgarh Unit said when asked about the local Brahmin BSP MLA who had harboured (in his own home) the killer of Chakrasen (reported in Tehelka, 25 August 2007) .

Educational institutions also reveal this entrenched casteist mentality. We have seen how SC students in AIIMS are subjected to segregation, caste abuse and victimization. In our own campus, we have seen how casteism is prevalent, abetted not just by some sections of the student community but also by the JNU administration. The recent incident of caste abuse in Periyar hostel is an eye-opener for those who live under the illusion that casteism is no longer a threat that needs to be addressed. .

In this incident, an objection was raised when a dalit student wanted to put up a picture of Dr. Ambedkar in his room. The manner in which the hostel administration dealt with this situation reveals the open reluctance to strongly oppose a casteist mentality. By his own admission, the Chief warden treated this incident as a simple case of a mild difference of opinion of two roommates over something innocuous. The chief warden openly states that he does not see a caste dimension in this incident! .

Education is supposed to be about learning and internalizing new values. It is the responsibility of a campus to inculcate democratic values in students. In the Periyar hostel case, ideally, the Chief warden should have explained to the roommate of the dalit student that any opposition to the picture of Dr. Ambedkar reveals a casteist bias. Intolerance to a symbol of dalit assertion is the first step towards segregation. Such an attitude is plainly unconstitutional, and should not be entertained at any cost. .

Instead, the Chief warden chose to ignore the entrenched casteist mindset that this incident revealed. In his own words, he tried to negotiate, and mediate between the students, by asking the complainant to remove Dr. Ambedkar's portrait,a suggestion which the warden thinks has "no problem". .

Dr. Ambedkar had warned that simply instituting laws is not enough to tackle a centuries old exploitative Brahminical caste order. .

Democracy is not a form of government, but a form of social organization.

[the formal framework of democracy] involves

an attitude of mind, and attitude of respect and equality towards their fellows. .

The Capital Market Authority (CMA) in partnership with International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group host a breakfast meeting themed “Corporate Governance; the pathway to sustainable business growth in Rwanda” on Wednesday, November 16th , 2016 to raise awareness on issues related to Corporate Governance as a sustainable driver of business growth.

Good corporate governance practices will attract investors to emerging markets’ businesses and address the barriers to access long term funding with lower transactions costs and hence lower cost of capital. Increased access to capital encourages new investments, boosts economic growth, and provides employment opportunities.

The Executive Director of Capital Market Authority (CMA), Robert Mathu stressed that “IFC has consistently cooperated with CMA in helping companies in Rwanda to explore capital markets as a source of long-term finance. A key prerequisite to access capital from public markets is to adopt and internalize corporate governance practices to instill confidence among investors.”

Looking outward is the same as looking inward, if you're honest. You can't decide what's internalized — everything is — all you do is rearrange yourself, cherry picking what you like, what the culture 'allows'. The darker side is deeply suppressed, denied, not you, nevertheless it remains, shading and shaping us all.

In photo 2, I was inspired by Napoleon Sarony, his flamboyant approach in his portrait works and theater personalities influenced me to shoot this portrait photo. The Renaissance Fair was a perfect place to capture the theatrics of people recreating a historical setting. I’ve directed my subject to internalize his character and not mind the camera to be able to bring out a genuine emotion of the person that he is portraying. This photo was shot in late afternoon using natural lighting, it was a clear day with harder lighting. A telephoto lens was used and post process was done in Lightroom using Nik Silver Efex pro.

January 24, 2012 - "A Regulatory Framework for Managing Systemic Risk" - Steven L. Schwarcz presented a Risk Regulation Seminar about the systemic risk in the financial sector and how current approaches to regulating financial risk are insufficient. Schwarcz suggested that a new analytical framework could be established in order to help internalize risk within financial institutions themselves to as to minimize external risk that might affect multiple institutions within the economy. This might involve firms paying into a 'systemic risk fund' that would help firms to be able to recover from financial failures. Schwarcz is a Stanley A. 2020 has been full of surprises the entire year. Just when you think you've internalized and have adapted to the new normal, 2020 springs something new your way. Another surprise this year was Maskne – short for mask acne, which means acne caused by face masks over-wearing. The technical term for maskne is acne mechanica.

I think it is supposed to look like it's scratching for grain, but as far as I am concerned, it's contemplating its own existential angst.

The real-cost cafe was designed as a restaurant. Video on large screens of restaurant workers combined with personal "place setting" screens to inform visitors about the total-environmental costs that are associated with common seafoods. The association of the information to the environment where it would later be needed was spot on. The content wasn't preachy, either, letting you (or those who eat seafood, anyway) decide to internalize this message for yourself.

On the left was the cook, who spoke of things in the dialogue from his perspective. In the middle was the counter waitress. On the right was either a host or a table waiter, I couldn't figure out exactly who he was supposed to be.
