My heart gets heavy

My soul seems so weak

And my mind starts to race

And I cannot speak

My character’s tarnished

A spirit’s that’s stained

I show no expression

I feel so ashamed

Over and over I make this mistake

Internalize failures day after day

It cuts me down, runs me ‘round but this fact remains

Sometimes Bad Things Happen to Good People

It’s what I must face

I grow resentful as haters pass by

The frustration’s looming and I know just why

My judgment’s all clouded

It used to be clear

I despise my position but I can’t move from here

Over and over I make this mistake

Regret past decisions day after day

That brings me down, keeps me down but this fact remains

Sometimes Bad Things Happen to Good People

That’s what I’ve got to face

Time waits for no one especially not me

And some circumstances can render pain

Well I hate being jealous while they’re all so selfish

As if I had something to gain or if they had someone to shame

Over and over I’ve made this mistake

Squander opportunities that’s what they all say

That brings me down, keeps me down but this fact remains

Sometimes Bad Things Happen to Good People

That’s what we all have to face

Sometimes Bad Things Happen to Good People

Too bad we all have to pay

.....all the signs are there.....

It's pride month and for many it means a time to celebrate and a time of freedom. For me too, but this month also means accepting my past for me.

Like many others, I struggled with my sexuality at an early age, not only against the demons but also against my own parents and family. With this picture I internalize for you how most of my life went for me. Being gay should be normal, it shouldn't define me as a person or be that important but unfortunately it is for many others.

Yes I am gay but it doesn't define my character. The person here is so much more. The only ones who understood and took me for who I was were my grandparents. Friends came and went, I left my family behind me until my partner made it clear to me in my twenties that there is acceptance and love for me too.

I've dreamed of so much more. Whenever I closed my eyes, I had the feeling that I was going to disappear. But talking about it, telling someone about it, was never my strength.

Be proud of what and who you are. So many people have fought, suffered and won before us.

Enjoy!

It is very difficult to cope with this feeling, not knowing where you belong and not being able to internalize the place you live in is one of the heaviest burdens, it is not good for mental health, it is very difficult to struggle alone, but the nature and animals that surround me are always good companions for me.

If you want to see the statue up close, you can visit it from here. Who knows, maybe it will awaken completely different feelings in you.

°°°°°°°°°°

The professional photography sector is still marked by the underrepresentation of women, especially in the most visible areas such as press, publishing, or advertising.

Women photographers often face gender stereotypes, questions about their legitimacy, and doubts about their skills—sometimes reinforced by internalized biases (lack of self-confidence, difficulty networking, etc.).

The attractiveness of a woman can, in some cases, exacerbate these prejudices, as some colleagues or clients may be more inclined to reduce her professional credibility to her appearance rather than her actual abilities !

Hello again, my dear friends, after a long time.

The photography exhibition "The Fall of the Rebel Angel" is about the Man-Faith-Punishment triangle. Inspired by the sculpture "The Fall of the Rebel Angels" designed by the Italian sculptor Agostino Fasolato around 1740, I wanted to question the effect of the association of Rebellion with "Evil" in belief systems on the "taming" of humans in social life.

Even though the images I use seem to indicate a belief, they are actually symbolic. And our dear art-loving visitors are free to internalize the characters in the images by replacing them with the "symbols" they wish. I think we have all had a "moment" in our lives when we expressed our opinions outside of general discourse and were somehow excluded from the social group we were in, labeled and punished with bullying in some way.

I present the exhibition 'The Fall of the Rebel Angel' to all rebellious souls.

He once told me that during the candlelight vigil, as he contemplated Romero's life and death, he internalized the idea that there was a radical edge to Christianity, that some embrace even unto death; it is "a faith worth dying for," in Paul's own words. Or, as he told Tracy Kidder, "Wow! This ain't the Catholicism that I remember."

Enantiodromia refers to the process whereby one seeks out and embraces an opposing quality from within, internalizing it in a way that results in individual wholeness. This process is the crux of Jung's notion called the "path of individuation." One must incorporate an opposing archetype into their psyche to obtain a state of internal ‘completion. In other wards, the struggle between our “shadow” and our “animus” is what comes to define us. The dark void of our shadows too often holds us down so that we can only flap our wings in a vain attempt to fly

Often we are most afraid of ourselves. If we can dare face our own complexity, rather than succumbing to an internalized dualism in which we flee from facing bits of our own selves that we dislike, we can discover a deep tranquillity. We peep into the complexity of our conflicting desires and impulses, acknowledge all that we are and so can be at peace with ourselves. Simon Tugwell OP urges that the way to peace is the acceptance of truth. Any bit of us that we refuse to accept will be our enemy, forcing us into defensive postures. And the discarded pieces of ourselves will rapidly find incarnation in those around us. Not all hostility is due to this, but it is one major factor in our inability to cope with other people, that they represent to us precisely those elements in ourselves which we have refused to acknowledge.

In another time, when I was a different human altogether, I used to drive all night between upstate New York and Chicago listening to Radiohead’s Kid A, OK Computer, Amnesiac and Modest Mouse’s The Moon and Antarctica. It was a time I couldn’t even possibly conceive of photographing both bands as I drove all night on the thruway and across the winding curves of Cleveland hoping to not fall asleep and become part of a circle. And so, I’ve changed, the bands have changed, the cities have changed. But, did you know, just like a body turns into a new self after 7 years, so does a city? I came to Chicago 20 years ago and it’s about to completely change over for the third time (Math is fun, don’t you think, Karma Police?) Anyway, on a macro level, we’re all seeing the bulldozers and razed buildings, the rent increases, the humans being kicked to the curb like they never mattered. We all internalize this stuff like an infestation about 100x more detrimental and insidious than Coronavirus. And, on the microlevel, we can feel it too. It’s in all the elements of ourselves and the places we visited, the shows we went to, the restaurants we ate in, the people we bonded with who may not be still breathing. We’re still drinking drinking drinking Coca Coca Cola and we’re still heading down that road. We aren’t going to stop changing, a slow evolution or de-evolution until we die.

I chose October to resume this series for a reason. The main reason is this…it’s scary. Disaster Capitalism is the ghost who never stopped living and who you would never invite into your home on purpose, right? You want to avoid the devastation because it’s hard to function without welcoming all the misfits in your city into your home and calling it a day. You know you are a misfit, too. And, there’s a lot of peeling of surfaces, a lot of taking away from the original form. You know there’s a secret tension between those human made constructions and the others-the trees, the grasses, the nature that will also swallow us whole if given a chance. Just like…you know there’s a secret self who went to hundreds of protests to actively resist fascism when Trump was a more than an existential idea threatening all of human kind. It is terrifying to see all the layers. The more you look, the less able you will be to stop looking. And, it’s still happening. Just look at that abortion ban.

And so, if you see me on the street, my long red hair a chaotic tumble around my camera, please know that I am not insane as I crouch low and high on tip toe, capturing all the urban monsters inside ourselves. We may never be reconstructed because we’re not potential high end real estate. Maybe I’m crazy but, then again, what will that make the rest of this world?

Don’t forget to Refuse Fascism today! It’s never too late…

I consider Tuesday's Sunrise at St. Helens a near miraculous event: beautiful color in in a cloud filled sky, flowers near their prime, little wind, and beauty all around. It is moments like this that I feel so blessed to be fully alive and awake, witnessing nature at her best!

I just finished a new blog post titled Journey to Walden Pond, Thoreau's Legacy, and Message to a Modern World. In this post I talk about both Walden as a physical place close to Concord Massachusetts, and our own internalized Walden that can be found close to home in the here and now where ever we are. I discuss my twelve takeaways from reading and rereading the book including: (1) Access to Nature is our Birthright; (2) What we Need is a Breath of Fresh Air; (3) Voluntary Simplicity; (4) Daily Practice; (5) Follow the Beat of Your Own Drummer; (6) Solitude: (7) Inward Journey; (8) Be Here Now; (9) Waking Up; (10) Follow Your Dreams; (11) Stay Grounded; and (12) Rebirth. Creating something is more then just flinging paint on a canvas or jotting down a few words in your journal. It is, in fact, discovering the world within yourself and all around you. It is reflecting on the kaleidoscope of thoughts that clouds your mind and internalizing your environment in a very personal way. The creative process, is simply, reflecting on the Universe within.

As a photographer, there are a slew of details, minutia and subtleties I always internalize in composing a scene. A checklist of the trivial if you will. Where I stand, the settings I decide, the position of my reliable pairing of glass, shutter, and sensor - all these things have purpose and meaning. Everything from placement of subject matter, to lighting and tones build a scene.

Photography, as with any of the arts however, allows interpretation. Failure and success are not defined. Users can interpret a story via pixels as it frames their own life and experiences.

This capture is one of those oddities for me. Occasionally, all of the aforementioned - the trivial, the minutia, the finite; they pass to the wayside. Sometimes, its refreshing to simply envelop a scene with the senses, and let the camera do what it does.

If you've ever captured a moment in time, and adored it for no logical reason, you understand where I'm coming from. For me, it is this Overhead Acquiescence.

Isn't wonderful to lie down on the trail and look up at the world through a chorus of daisies dancing in the wind?

Not often do our scripture readings, dovetail so well, into a clear and cohesive message. The golden thread that weaves through them so beautifully is found in our Gospel acclamation today from Galatians. Listen, with an open heart as I read it-again. “May I never boast except in the cross of the Lord through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.” Practicing our faith will cost us according to this scripture passage. Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his famous book called ‘The Cost of Discipleship’ says this and I quote “Cheap grace is the grace we bestow on ourselves. Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession…Cheap grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ.” End quote.

The starting point for us, is the question that Jesus’ askes his disciples in today’s gospel reading: “but who do you say that I am?” Peter’s answer “You are the Christ.” It is not hard to imagine Jesus asking each of us this simple question and yet a simple question with profound consequences. We know Peter’s story, and we know the story of all the disciples. We have 2000 plus years of Saints, and new Saints being added every year. What do they have in common? To know Christ is to follow Christ and it is not an easy task.

One thing should be clear it; it will cost us everything.

Our gospel reading says so! As I repeat it part of the Gospel, let it sink deeply into our heart!

“He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,

"Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,

take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,

but whoever loses his life for my sake

and that of the gospel will save it."

Most of us understand this message and we have internalized it and live it out our lives. No one knows what you or I have given up…what personal sacrifices you or I have made. It does not matter that people do not know. The fruit is in the way you live your life as a Christian in the world. We know the cost and regardless we follow our God.

Our reading from Isaiah tells us how a faithful servant responds to God…” the Lord God opens my ear that I may hear, and I have not rebelled, I have not turned back. I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. The Lord God is my help!” As we hear the words of the suffering servant of Isaiah, by default we naturally turn to Jesus and his passion for this is HIS story. Whatever discomfort we may feel in living out our faith, when compared to the passion of Christ, seems a bit smaller and bearable.

Sometimes we meet believers that give lip service to their faith and not much else.

Our second reading from James says something profound…” demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.” Demonstrate means that I live my faith…not just talk about it. Our faith as Catholics means we understand what sacrifice is! Our faith is a sacrificial religion, and we are reminded of this fact every time we walk into a Catholic church and are confronted by a crucifix. What we do here at Mass is not just for appearances, to be uplifted or entertained. We come to offer up our lives completely with Christ in the Eucharist sacrifice for the world.

The world needs us now-even though they deny it. We are the sign, the candle in the darkness! When we live out our baptismal promises, the Christ in us will shine as a testament to the world that Jesus Christ is our Lord, and we are following Him. We live in a world now, that does not even give Christ lip service. God is forgotten and we are told that belief is a fairytale. Our response is that we do believe in something verses nothing at all!

The question our critiques have…is why do we do what we do as Catholics? We know what our purpose in life is for and we have a deep peace that transcends our pains, joys, and sufferings. We are not alone…God resides within us, and HE shows us the way to walk in unbelieving world. We know who Jesus is. May we always strive to align our lives to HIS example. As we prepare to meet HIM now in the Eucharist, may we recommit to following him not just in words but in our actions.

Shanty Bottom Brook, Adirondacks, NY.

I am following a trail in the Pharoah Wilderness that starts several miles up a well graded back road. It's been raining all day, but that weather seems to have spent itself, with some of the gloom lifting as the system moves out. I tend to internalize when I am just walking in the understory. There's too much information, too many trees, too much vegetation to take all of it in. Focused on a destination, the mind thinks about the trail ahead and what has to be pushed through to reach the end. Concentrate on respiration, and burning leg muscles. After roughly following the main brook for awhile, I stumble into a clearing where a tributary comes in. The canopy is more open where they meet, and I feel like I can breathe again. My focus returns, and I begin to see with more clarity. It is a gentle stream. The cut through the forest is shallow, the boulder debris old. and thick with moss. You can tell this brook does not flood often, the water here does not rage or gouge a canyon through the folds of the wood. A soft light has been invading the damp air, and as I watch, low angle shafts of light follow the ridge line, almost into the sanctuary. So much of this pursuit revolves around openings. Holes in schedules, days without demands, whims of weather, and the clearing of your mind. I don't know if nature expends effort or relies on fate when making these oases, any more than we expend effort or rely on fate to let ourselves find them. Perhaps it's a bit of both.

I *think* that after 50+ years of taking pictures I have finally internalized the basic requirement to make sure the entire subject is in the frame before taking the picture. At this point in time (Jan 1976), I evidently had not. Apologies.

“Don't just say you have read books. Show that through them you have learned to think better, to be a more discriminating and reflective person. Books are the training weights of the mind. They are very helpful, but it would be a bad mistake to suppose that one has made progress simply by having internalized their contents.”

“Some people say home is where you come from. But I think it’s a place you need to find, like it’s scattered and you pick pieces of it up along the way.” ― Katie Kacvinsky, Awaken

“Give yourself permission to see and feel the extraordinary events in your own life. In internalizing them, you also will find your perspective about life and its meaning will change, resulting in growth and expansion of your soul.”

An aspect of Freemasonry that has always fascinated me is the belief of some that it is a "secret fraternity." Well, if you are aware of it, then it isn't secret, is it? It is, however, a fraternity with secrets.

This photograph, treated with a texture to give it the hint of age, is of a stairway located in the Colonial Room of the Salt Lake Masonic Temple in Utah. This room, as well as others, is open for public visitors at nearly anytime by simply making a phone call.

Most importantly, nearly everything you see within the photo is steeped in the symbolism of Freemasonry. As an adept in the Craft, I must take care that I don't disclose more than what might be considered courtesy explanations. For example, I titled the shot, "Stairway to ....." To where? I cannot say.

While one can find those explanations by searching the Internet, only by being a brother within the fraternity can you internalize that meaning into your life and use it for positive change.

And that is the Secret of Freemasonry.

Process:

Nikon Coolpix P4, flash, 7.5mm, 1/181sec, f/2.7, adjusted in Adobe Photoshop by adding texture, cropping out and obscuring the really secret stuff, and various and sundry other janitorial work. Or, in lay terms, I took a crappy old photo with bad lighting and buggered it up with a texture to make it look more valuable than it really is. Sort of like how they antique and distress new furniture so they can charge more for it.

The last two weeks I've been on vacation in the American Southwest and visited some of the most beautiful and most famous locations for landscape photography there. One place that has been photographed over and over again is Upper Antelope Canyon (you might have heard about the $6.5 million photo sale from this place). Usually I'm wary about these tourist hotspots and my initial impression of Antelope Canyon (after the first "Wow" when entering it) was that it was incredible overcrowded and very stressful to photograph with so many people moving around.

However, my perception quickly transformed. After having spent about one hour inside the canyon with our very helpful & charming tour guide I began to internalize the beauty of my surroundings and calmed down. At this point the canyon also emptied a little bit and our small group of photographers had entire chambers of the canyon just for us. Finally I fell in love with it and marveled about the beautiful patterns and colors of the sandstone, the amazing sun beams and the now almost solemn atmosphere. No wonder this place has been photographed so often. It is indeed fantastic and one of the true natural wonders of this world.

Was I able to come up with something original in there? Actually I didn't have this ambition since it would seem almost arrogant to do so when visiting it for the first time, after so many famous photographers have been there before. Still, I feel kind of lucky since I managed to photograph two nicely lit sunbeams simultaneously which I haven't seen on many photos yet.

Beautiful layers of fog, mist and clouds move through the Mowich Lake area of Mt. Rainier National Park.

When a quiet, wind-free night suddenly fills in with the Aurora light, my internal state of calmness rapidly changes. The inflow of excitement kicks in bringing a nervous and chaotic search for composition. Only after the first shot of adrenaline fades away, I can calm down and move into my internal Zen space. Then, I can internalize the experience to put together all the moving parts and frame the shot.

The next episode of Images in Focus has just been published! It's all about Depth of Field. Check it out here: youtu.be/6y1s2rzuaMA

From all the photographers I've worked with, I find that Depth of Field is one of those topics that many people don't have a solid understanding of. They know that aperture will control DOF but they don't know many of the other variables that are equally if not more important than aperture! In this episode, Juan and I break down these variables and make DOF easy to understand and internalize. Please share and any comments and suggestions are welcome!!

This image is a good example of using a shallow DOF to draw attention to the foreground rock. DOF is an artistic tool that we can use to give more impact to our photos!

I could think of no better model that My Scene's Kennedy for the "Broadcast Yourself" series. She has the distinctive Barbie face, with the unsettling addition of bedroom eyes, and cherry red slightly parted lips. Combined with her girlish ponytails, she channels a myriad of forbidden fantasies and desires. I decided to use a different doll's body, which I couse for its suggestive pose and sheer red nightie.

She is using the built-in webcam on her little laptop to share images of herself with the world. She makes a digital slide show for her social networking pages using a song by The Pussycat Dolls. The lyrics of the song are about wanting fame and attention, and being called sexy by boys. She knows no better way to express herself that to take photos that expose her breasts. She is not thinking of the consequences of her actions, especially what kind of influence this could have on her little sister Ana.

The Doll Project is a series of conceptual digital photographs that uses fashion dolls to embody the negative messages the media gives to young girls. Though it would not be fair to blame it all on Barbie, there have been many instances in which she has come dangerously close. I chose to use Barbie dolls because they are miniature mannequins, emblems of the fashion world writ small, a representation of our culture's impossible standards of beauty scaled to one sixth actual size. The little pink scale and How To Lose Weight book are both real Barbie accessories from the 1960s. They are recurring motifs in the pictures in the series, symbolizing the ongoing dissatisfaction many girls and women feel about their weight and body image. The dolls' names, Ana and Mia, are taken from internet neologisms coined by anorexic and bulimic girls who have formed online communities with the unfortunate purpose of encouraging each other in their disordered eating. With each passing era, Ana and Mia are younger and younger, and the physical ideal to which they aspire becomes more unattainable. They internalize the unrealistic expectations of a society that digitally manipulates images of women in fashion and beauty advertisements and value their own bodies only as objects for others to look at and desire.

In my frustration I decided to consult the Oracle at ChatGPT concering our problem with fascistic billionaires. Here is their response:

Addressing concerns related to the environmental impact of the actions of the wealthy requires a combination of policy measures, public awareness, and international cooperation. Here are some potential strategies:

1. **Environmental Regulations:**

- Strengthen and enforce environmental regulations to limit pollution, resource depletion, and unsustainable practices.

- Implement and improve emissions standards, waste disposal regulations, and sustainable resource management policies.

2. **Carbon Pricing:**

- Advocate for carbon pricing mechanisms, such as carbon taxes or cap-and-trade systems, to internalize the environmental costs of business activities.

3. **Renewable Energy Transition:**

- Encourage and invest in renewable energy sources to shift away from fossil fuels. This might involve subsidies, tax incentives, and research funding for clean energy technologies.

4. **Corporate Responsibility:**

- Promote corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainable business practices. Encourage transparency in reporting environmental impacts and adherence to ethical standards.

5. **Wealth Redistribution:**

- Address wealth inequality through progressive taxation and social policies. This can help prevent a concentration of power and resources in the hands of a few.

6. **Political Advocacy:**

- Support political candidates and policies that prioritize environmental sustainability and address the influence of money in politics.

7. **Consumer Awareness:**

- Educate consumers about the environmental impact of their choices and encourage sustainable consumption. A conscious consumer base can drive market demand for eco-friendly products and services.

8. **International Cooperation:**

- Promote international agreements and cooperation to address global environmental challenges. Climate change and resource depletion are global issues that require coordinated efforts.

9. **Philanthropy:**

- Encourage billionaires to use their wealth for philanthropic efforts that focus on environmental conservation, sustainable development, and addressing climate change.

10. **Innovation and Technology:**

- Invest in and support research and development of technologies that promote environmental sustainability and mitigate the impact of human activities on the planet.

It's important to note that systemic change often requires a combination of policy, economic, and cultural shifts. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and individuals is crucial for creating a sustainable and equitable future. Public pressure and awareness play a significant role in holding both businesses and governments accountable for their environmental impact.

Product Description

Freestyled and performance captured by award-winning professional Belly Dancer Mary Winpenny.

In dance, floorwork refers to movements performed on the floor.

Developed in Cairo 1920s, modern Egyptian Belly Dance or "Raqs Sharqi" has roots in Egyptian folkloric dances with some influence from western dance genres. In Egyptian style, the movements tend to be more internalized and smaller than other styles of belly dance. Egyptian Raqs include some ballet and ballroom dance influences, such as in footwork (for example the use of arabesque) and in stance and arm positions, although adapted to an oriental style.

Friday Food For Thought

Many of us were taught when we were young that when you do wrong we apologize and correct what we did wrong. As we got older we come to realize that everyone does not live by this rule. There are moments in life were we find that we will be done wrong. It could be physical abuse, divorce, financial blows, underhanded deals, or harsh words and we expect the other person or party correct what they did wrong. But to our surprise nothing is given in return, not even an apology or recognition by the person that they are wrong.

There are only two responses we can have: internalize the anger and become bitter or let go! Bitterness only closes our hands not to let go the past and keep replaying past memory tapes of us being done wrong. Most of all bitterness keeps us from grabbing hold to the blessing in front of us all because we are afraid to let go the negativity of the past. I wish I could tell you that if you let go you will not be hurt again but that is not true. But I can tell you if you do not let go, you will not feel the joy that you will gain more out of life.

It’ is ok….

….to Let Go!

Dear friends,

everything is fine. I'm just enjoying reading books, being at home and practicing Dr. Hew Len's Ho'oponopono and internalizing the profound teachings of my spiritual teacher David R. Hawkins.

Just a little pause of taking photos...

Today, I went outside with my beloved nephew and took this shot of ice crystals. We have no snow, but since a week wonderful cold and sunny weather.

Of course, these crystals are dedicated to you, my dear flickr friends!

Hope, that everybody is alright, too.

Wishing everybody a most fantastic New Year's Eve!

All the best,

Namasté,

Lars.

Forgiving is not forgetting. It's letting go of the hurt.

So this image wraps up my series on Self-Stigma. It wasn’t all that I had hoped it would be, but then again what ever is? it’s funny because this stigma series wasn’t even supposed to be self portraits in the first place, but it became much more than that. It became a narrative of my life both now and then, a transformation of sorts.

From bandaids to butterflies.

Noctilucent clouds behind the Helsinki Cathedral at ten to one one July night. Cropped, no other editing.

In 1995 Finnish author Anja Kauranen (Snellman) wrote a novel called Pelon maantiede (Geography of Fear). This book dealt with (among other matters) a phenomenon I recognized - a tendency by many women, including myself, to see the geography of the cities they lived

in from the perspective of places to avoid, especially after dark, because they were potentially unsafe. Reading the book made me aware of this kind of thinking that I had internalized to the extent that I was not aware of it anymore. I had simply accepted certain limitations as to where I considered it to be safe to move about alone at night - especially but not limited to weekend nights.

Returning to my country of origin this summer I felt very safe although I was walking through the city center after midnight pulling a big and a small suitcase. So safe that it not only felt normal to walk through the city center alone with heavy luggage, but also to take out a camera and two lenses and exchange them.

It was a beautiful night with noctilucent clouds. I am very fortunate to be rooted in two very safe countries. I wish more people in general and women in particular could have this experience - to not only seize the day, but also to seize the night.

LOVE YOUR NEXT EVEN IF IT IS DIFFERENT.

The subliminal message is one of the most striking elements in advertising, cinema, art or television. A subliminal message is a message or a visual signal designed to be transmitted under (sub) the normal (liminal) limits of perception.

Among the examples, a message can be mentioned in a song, not perceived by the conscious mind but able to reach the unconscious, or an image transmitted so shortly (in a tenth of a second) that it is not perceived at the level conscious but is perceived unconsciously. The person may not perceive the message consciously but internalize it at the subconscious level.

The perception of subliminal messages in advertising, literature, cinema and television is a business that has to do with the insertion of words drawn through structural elements, or elements that are positioned in certain scenes, completely changing their meaning.

I scurry upon this wilted trail,

The dreaded rat race.

A year has snuck by, yet still I fail;

Internalized disgrace.

Of course I pine for a colder place,

Where winds moan and wail.

To look into the eye on freedom’s face,

And trim her weathered sail.

This lovely daisy returning to bloom is meant to keep me calm.

Every time I get into a car, I take a risk that I long ago factored into my life’s equation. I don’t think about it (much). A few weeks ago, John and I rationalized the risks of food delivery by adhering to a routine: take the bags from the doorstep, sort the groceries, wash the produce and clean the bags, the counters, and our hands. Now we quarantine all other packages by the front door for two or three days to minimize the danger of touching and opening them.

Today we’ve made a similar plan for the delivery of something bigger - a washing machine to replace the one that inconveniently broke last week: bring the crew in through the back, wipe everything they touch and pass through when they leave, and move ourselves upstairs for a few days so we don’t come into contact with anything we might have missed. It’s a plan, not a mitigation of the fear. I have felt so safe in this bubble of a home. Now there will be strangers breathing in my bedroom. What a terrible, inconceivable thing to be afraid of!

Last night’s dire new pandemic predictions, I know, aren’t helping. Nor is the breakfast conversation about our finances in the light of a falling stock market and a prolonged, and perhaps chaotic crisis. But all I have to do is think about the trepidation with which those delivery guys will climb down from their truck and enter yet another stranger’s house, expose themselves to OUR air, OUR breathe, to remember that I am not the only one who is afraid.

As we confront a new, and perhaps prolonged reality in which all encounters with others represent a rational danger to ourselves, I will have to internalize the fact that it is the disease we fear, not the people who come to help us.
