This was at Seikai, an ancient, gorgeous, traditional ryokan just down the street from my apartment. It took me nearly 2 years to realize this place was a ryokan--and the TAISHO EMPEROR* had stayed here 30 years earlier, when touring Shikoku! DUDE.

* Taisho = Emperor before the current one. The time up until that Emperor's death in 1989 was the Taisho Era. Everything since then has been the Heisei Era, for the Heisei Emperor, who's the son of the Taisho Emperor.

The Intermediate Egret, Median Egret, or Yellow-billed Egret (Mesophoyx intermedia) is a medium-sized heron. It is a resident breeder from east Africa across tropical southern Asia to Australia. It often nests in colonies with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Two to five eggs are laid, the clutch size varying with region. This species, as its scientific name implies, is intermediate in size between the Great Egret and smaller white egrets like the Little Egret and Cattle Egret, though nearer to Little than Great. It is about 90 cm tall with all-white plumage, generally dark legs and a thickish yellow bill. Breeding birds may have a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on their breast and back, and dull yellow or pink on their upper legs (regional variations). The sexes are similar.

Some taxonomists put this species in the genus Egretta or Ardea.

The Intermediate Egret stalks its prey methodically in shallow coastal or fresh water, including flooded fields. It eats fish, frogs, crustaceans and insects.

This isn't everybody, but these have been the regulars this year so far.

(l-r)

- Katsue (met my family on the train to Ikeda from Tokushima--not very high-level, but a sweetheart)

- new Yamaguchi-san (new enough that I don't remember her first name--oops! Beginners student who braved our class due to the beginning class being full and has been a bit nervous about the level difference; big Star Wars fan, who started bringing a SW notebook to class in a silent show of support after the other ladies admitted to not enjoying the film when I tried showing it)

- Shizuko (grandmother of one of my junior high kids; not the greatest at English, but incredibly warm and kind and full of life, always feeding me tea and sweets if I come by, and always giving me fresh veggies)

- me

- Terumi (really warm and wonderful, and has two grown daughters and has recently become a grandmother; this is her house we're at)

- Masumi (has a really warm smile; she co-owns a local kimono store with her husband, who's a beginners student)
