The Intermediate Egret, median egret, or yellow-billed egret (Mesophoyx intermedia) is a medium-sized heron. Some taxonomists put the species in the genus Egretta or Ardea. It is a resident breeder from east Africa across the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and Australia.
This species, as its scientific name implies, is intermediate in size between the Great Egret and smaller white egrets like the Little Egret and Cattle Egret, though nearer to Little than Great. It is about 56–72 cm (22–28 in) long with a 105–115 cm (41–45 in) wingspan and weighs c.400g (14 oz), with all-white plumage, generally dark legs and a thickish yellow bill. Breeding birds may have a reddish or black bill, greenish yellow gape skin, loose filamentous plumes on their breast and back, and dull yellow or pink on their upper legs (regional variations). The sexes are similar.
Differences from Great Egret
The non-breeding colours are similar, but the Intermediate is smaller, with neck length a little less than body length, a slightly domed head, and a shorter, thicker bill. The Great Egret has a noticeable kink near the middle of its neck, and the top of its longer bill nearly aligns with the flat top of its head. Close up, the bare skin of the Great Egret's gape line extends in a dagger shape behind the eye, while the Intermediate's is less pointed and ends below the eye. The Intermediate tends to stalk upright with neck extended forward. The Great is more patient, often adopting a sideways-leaning "one-eyed" stance.
Differences from Little Egret
Little Egrets have yellow-soled feet and black bills. They often run after fish in shallow water. Breeding birds have long nuptial plumes on the back of their heads.
Behaviour
The Intermediate Egret stalks its prey methodically in shallow coastal or fresh water, including flooded fields. It eats fish, frogs, crustaceans and insects. It often nests in colonies with other herons, usually on platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs. Two to five eggs are laid, the clutch size varying with region.

After removing the asphalt siding we discovered the original shiplap siding. The front room is still creepy, though.
Landis Intermediate School students escorted residents of the Veterans Memorial home in Vineland to a senior prom in the Home’s auditorium May 30, 2014. The students had been visiting the Home each month since September 2013 to participate in activities with the residents. As a final event, 50 students escorted 50 residents along with 32 of the Home’s resident couples to the prom. Area businesses donated food, limousine rides and corsages. At evening’s end, residents Connie Tomasso and Mike Damico were crowned Prom Queen and King. I grabbed this pic of an Intermediate Egret (Mesophoyx intermedius) in Bhandup mangroves in Bombay. The bird is called Madhyam Bagala [Devanagari : मध्यम बगळा] in Marathi.

This was a college class book. No one wanted to buy it. Which is weird since the algebra concepts contained within probably remain unchanged from the date the book was published until at least now. Anyway, this was one of my first projects. I discovered that cutting those slick textbook pages is very, very difficult.
I forgot to say that this is a REALLY hard bird to photograph in full sun. I mean, really really hard. Firstly the camera doesn't seem to like focusing on bright objects. But more universally, the bird is so very bright white and the grass and water comparatively dark that it is impossible to maintain any detail in bird without rendering the background kind of odd. Or putting it the other way, if you make the background look like real grass and water, the bird is burnt to a crisp, blinding white.
I ducked out to Kellys first thing this morning since this bird has been noticed there for a week or so, not really expecting it to greet me in front of the hide. But it did and then carried out these pre-nuptual exercises all to itself. Good to be prepared, even if you are the only egret in town.
Showing off its breeding plumage, although the beak, face and leg colours are not quite there yet.
Compare with what I believe is the same bird, 10 weeks later.
