When driving home south on I95 I always glance down toward the tracks and Atwells interlocking when passing through the city. Well on this morning I saw the unmistakable string of freight tucked off the main in the skeletal remains of what was once the New Haven Railroad's Yard 17. So I hopped off the highway to grab some shots on this cold sunny morning as Providence and Worcester Railroad's Valley Falls based local PR3 worked the Providence Journal spur which is the last old school rail served industry in the heart of the city.
Having completed all the complicated switch back moves to pull and spot the printing plant, PW GP38-2 2007 (built new for the then only 7 yr newly independent road by EMD in Nov. 1980) is shoving three empty plate F newsprint boxcars back out the lead and over Promenade Street to the rest of their waiting train.

UP 8366, wearing UP's new and wingless paint scheme, shoves on the rear of an empty rock train at Tower 26 near Downtown Houston.
The train is on the recently added, second northeast connector track at the interlocking. This allows trains to more easily bypass Englewood Yard, which this empty unit train will be doing shortly after it rounds the corner here.

Heading eastward, NS stacks from Landers Yard snake through 80th Street Interlocking and start climbing up the long flyover that carries the former C&WI over the Belt Railway of Chicago. Once the train reaches Pullman Junction, it will pass through Calumet Yard and use the former Nickel Plate main out of the city.
Our next shot in this series comes from about milepost 324 on the Pittsburgh Line. We're looking west at what was EAST RG interlocking. This was on the east end of where the old Radebaugh Tunnel was. The tunnel would have been directly behind the signal. This interlocking controlled movements into the tunnels, as well as movements onto the 'old' Radebaugh Tunnel - the track on the right, main three (formerly four), would have gone to the old tunnel. That tunnel was still in service in this shot, taken out of service in 1973. This image really gets me, as there is absolutely no way today you would know any of this was here. The hill is grown over, the track to the right is so long gone you'd never know rails or a tunnel were ever there. EAST RG and the associated signals were taken out around the time RG closed in 1980.

Interlocked Destinies by Daniel Arrhakis (2016)
Sometimes fates intersect in certain temporal lines ... not by chance ... are events that need to materialize ... the secret is to recognize the characters and the directions so that we can anticipate the Future ... we live in that times !

Sitting in the small yard just south of the interlocking at Tower 32/BNSF Crossing, UP 1058 waits for clearance on UP's Sabine Industrial Lead, the former SP branch to Port Arthur.
Effective March 2005, an FRA rule requires reflective white or yellow striping on all freight cars and locomotives. Prior to that date, a red reflective stripe across the frame was standard on UP locomotives. 20 years later, nearly every unit has been retrofitted or repainted. But not UP 1058, which still wears its early 2000's paint and sill stripe after being repainted from SP 9762.

Amtrak work extra 2006 is southbound through Cedar Interlocking in North Haven, CT. The Providence & Worcester GP38-2 is on loan to Amtrak for work train service on the Springfield and Shore Lines.
The second of two southbound Bloomer trains is moments from hitting the TP&W diamond at Chatsworth, IL with "not-a-leaser" GP10 7561 in the lead. Although a lucky "stumble-upon" for me while the train was loading at Cullom, this move was apparently well-publicized. Luckily, the other fans managed to hide themselves well, at least at this particular location.
An eastbound CWR train swings into F interlocking, straddling the line between the Metropolitan Sub to the west and the Washington Sub to the east. In the foreground is the west end of the Montana Track. This track ran from here to Montana Ave to the east. Jeremy Plant took this photo in May 1972. JL Sessa collection.
A Canadian Pacific manifest ducks under the signal bridge at Hoffman along Dayton's Bluff in Saint Paul. The route for this train became clear after the Empire Builder departed making a direct line for Red Wing.
CTrail 4407 passing through Willow interlocking before making its station stop in Berlin. The far left track is Pan Am's Waterbury Branch to Plainville, and the far right track is the Berlin industrial.
More from the lovely conditions seen here in last few days. A last few days leave this year came at the right time - definitely beats Christmas shopping in my view.
A "Goat Boat" Heritage I Dash 9 is the lead unit for BNSF train G-RPHSWA9-19B dropping out of The Gooseneck into Old Union Depot Interlocking on Track 81 of the KCT North-South Corridor. 11/21/24.
With a faint memory of a good cloud---ing I received by a similar looking train back in 2015, this particular Saturday afternoon it seemed like that wouldn't be the case. This is a tardy FEC 109 passing Iris Interlocking at 3:30 PM, three hours off the advertised time. This shot only works perfectly at a certain time, and usually GEVOs aren't part of the equation. Intermountain ES44C4 locos #802 and #820 lead the charge of the autorack, rock, and manifest train.
An SD70ACC rebuild is on the point of NS train 112 negotiating the reverse S curve at Old Union Depot Interlocking on Track 81 of the KCT North-South Corridor. This train is bound for BNSF's Argentine Yard in Kansas City, KS, and once it's yarded, the power will return home to NS's Avondale Yard north of the river. 10/22/23.
Canandaigua's boathouses don't feel like they should be in Upstate NY. I felt like I was wandering Halifax or some fishing town on the Atlantic as I took my photos.
