Once again I found myself up at Cowee Mountain Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I had intended to find a nice little spot somewhere in the mountains earlier, but as time drew short, the cloud levels continued to drop, I fell back into one of my favorite scenes. The clouds were rushing in and out of the valley, the humidity was making everyone uncomfortable... That's photography though, chasing light like a star struck groupie, fumbling the relationship more often than not... but sometimes, the stars align and you find some headway. [That may be the nicest way I have ever described chasing light.....] So, there I stood, having carefully, slowly setting up my equipment, prepping my exposure, watching the nearby photographers with their own array of gadgets and gizmos, and no doubt strong opinions on the same scene. Lots of laughter, lots of waiting... while I stood near my tripod, trigger in hand snapping shots every so often, tracking and waiting for these corpuscular rays to cut through the clouds in just the right way. Finally I had a few moments to grab the shot I was waiting on, just as a huge cloud came and filled the entire valley. That was it according to four of the photographers, no more light, the day was done 45 minutes till actual sunset, five before golden hour... But the rest of us stayed, perhaps not wishing to admit defeat, maybe convinced the light would return...

i picked these on my way back home tonight, put them in a little beaker next to my computer, next to a simple lampshade... and proceeded to check my email and flickr.

i intended to do a quick, very closeup macro shot of one of them, but i liked the light on them from the lamp -- i decided to go with this.

i'm still posting and running... tired but feeling encouraged.

thank you.

Matthew 28:5-7

And the angel answered and said to the women, Fear not you: for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: see, I have told you.

Is It So Important?

Is it really so important

just to know that Jesus died,

Does it really make a difference knowing

He was crucified?

Indeed, it was for all my sin

He hung upon a tree,

So it really is important -

through believing, I am free.

Free from all my sin and shame, my

conscience cleansed from guilt,

You too may know this blessing,

through believing if you wilt.

Is it so important then to know that Jesus rose?

That the tomb was empty, mocking

all the efforts of His foes.

Yes! It proves his power,

over sin and death and grave.

By His glorious resurrection,

we know He came to save.

His disciples who had seen Him die,

were frightened and were sad;

Until the day of resurrection -

His appearing made them glad.

He ascended to his Father,

there His precious blood to plead,

For those who came believing,

acknowledging their need,

He has sent his Holy Spirit

(Guide and Comforter is He)

He will teach me of my Saviour,

who will come again for me.

Then - with all who love Him,

we shall meet Him in the air.

He will take us to his Father's house,

to praise Him ever there.

The rituals of the Rumi's followers (Whirling Dervishes) are among the enduring as well as the most exquisite ceremonies of spirituality.

The ritual whirling of the dervishes is an act of love and a drama of faith. It possesses a highly structured form within which the gentle turns become increasingly dynamic as the individual dervishes strive to achieve a state of trans.

The music that accompanies the whirling from beginning to end ranges from somber to rhapsodical; its effect is intended to be mesmerizing.

Chanting of poetry, rhythmic rotation, and incessant music create a synthesis which, according to the faithful, induces a feeling of soaring, of ecstasy, of mystical flight.

National Museum in Prague is a Czech museum institution intended to systematically establish, prepare, and publicly exhibit natural scientific and historical collections. It was founded in 1818 by Kašpar Maria Šternberg. Historian František Palacký was also strongly involved in the foundation of the museum.

After the French Revolution, royal and private collections of art, science and culture were made available to the public. The beginnings of the museum can be seen as far back as 1796 when the private Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts was founded by Count Casper

Sternberk-Manderschied and a group of other prominent nobles. The avowed purpose of the society was "the renewed promotion of art and taste," and during the time of Joseph II, it would be adamantly opposed to the King. In 1800, the group founded the Academy of Fine Arts, which trained students in progressive forms of art and history

A late entry, but I needed a bit of photography wind down time after work!

The Sun Voyager is a sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason, located next to the Sæbraut road in Reykjavík, Iceland. Sun Voyager is described as a dreamboat, or an ode to the Sun. The artist intended it to convey the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom.

In 1986, the district association of the west part of the city funded a competition for a new outdoor sculpture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the city of Reykjavík. Jón Gunnar's Sun Voyager won the competition, and the aluminium model was presented to the city for enlargement. The full-sized Sun Voyager was eventually unveiled on Sæbraut on the birthday of the city of Reykjavík, August 18, 1990.

The work is constructed of quality stainless steel and stands on a circle of granite slabs surrounded by so-called “town-hall concrete”. It was constructed in accordance with Jón Gunnar's enlarged full-scale drawing of Sun Voyager and was overseen by Jón Gunnar's assistant, the artist Kristinn E. Hrafnsson. The engineering of the sculpture was supervised by the technologist, Sigurjón Yngvason, in close cooperation with Jón Gunnar himself, the building itself was carried out by Reynir Hjálmtýsson and his assistant.

In an interview published in the newspaper Þjóðviljinn on 11 June 1987, Jón Gunnar describes the genesis of the work as being part of the Scandinavian art project, Experimental Environment, which conducted various artistic experiments in Iceland, Denmark and other places in the 1980s.

In May 1985, a group of artists, members of the Scandinavian art project, Experimental Environment, gathered to take part in the Saari-Vala Environmental Art Action in Bockholm, Finland. There I experienced a sense of the history of the origins of Icelanders, something which is also related in the present exhibition at the Nordic House in Reykjavík.

I had an uncanny feeling that I had been on this island before, when travelling on my way from Mongolia to Iceland, hundreds of years ago.

As you know, there have been speculations that the Icelanders as a race originated in Mongolia. I have discovered the history of their migration to Iceland, which runs as follows: Many centuries ago, a mighty warlord, let’s say it was Alexander the Great, was living in the centre of the known world. He dispatched his bravest and most experienced warriors, along with some women, scribes and other followers, on an exploratory expedition to the cardinal directions, the north, west, south, and east, in order to discover and conquer new, unknown territories. Those who headed east followed the rising sun until they reached the steppes of Mongolia. There they settled down and lived in comfort. Those scribes who accompanied the warriors were expected to document the expedition for the king. Several centuries later, when the documents written by the scribes eventually came to be examined, the people discovered that they had another fatherland in the west. They therefore decided to gather together their belongings and head back west towards the setting sun. We followed the sun for days and years, walking, riding and sailing. We enriched our experience and our determination grew in strength as our journey progressed, and we recorded everything that we saw and experienced. I remember endless pine forests, mountains and waterfalls, lakes, islands, rivers and seas before we eventually reached the ocean. We then constructed huge ships and sailed on westwards towards the setting sun.

As a result of this vivid experience of my participation in this expedition while on the island of Bockholm in the Finnish archipelago, I carved a picture of a sun ship into a granite rock by the sea. The sun ship symbolizes the promise of new, undiscovered territory. It is also being exhibited here at the Nordic House, made of aluminium.

There has been some dispute about the eventual location of Sun Voyager on Sæbraut in Reykjavík. Some people have complained that the ship does not face west, towards the setting Sun in accordance with the concept behind it. The original intention had been for Sun Voyager to be situated in the west part of Reykjavík, for obvious reasons. Jón Gunnar's original idea had been for the ship to be placed on Landakot hill, the prow facing the centre of Reykjavík and the stern to Christ the King Cathedral (Icelandic: Landakotskirkja). Another possibility was that it could be placed by the harbour in the centre of Reykjavík on a specially constructed base. The coastline by Ánanaust nonetheless eventually came to be Jón Gunnar's preferred location for the ship. Unfortunately, changes in the town planning for Reykjavík came to rule out this location. In the end, the final decision was taken (with Jón Gunnar's consent) that Sun Voyager should be located on Sæbraut on a small headland (which the artist jokingly called Jónsnes: Jón's Peninsula). Jón Gunnar was well aware that when bolted to its platform, Sun Voyager would be facing north, but felt that that made little difference when it came down to it.

Sun Voyager was built in accordance with the artist's hand-drawn full-scale plan. Its irregular form with the ever-flowing lines and poetic movement which are a distinctive feature of so many of his works make it seem as if the ship is floating on air. It reaches out into space in such a way that the sea, the sky and the mind of the observer become part of the work as a whole. As a result, Sun Voyager has the unique quality of being able to carry each and every observer to wherever his/her mind takes him/her. Few of Jón Gunnar's works have a simple obvious interpretation. As he stated himself, all works of art should convey a message that transcends the work itself. It is the observer who bears the eventual responsibility for interpreting the works in his/her own way, thus becoming a participant in the overall creation of the work. Jón Gunnar's works frequently make such demands on the observers, giving them the opportunity to discover new truths as a result of their experience.

The taxonomy of the Franklin's Grouse has been in flux for some time. The IUCN and the AOS seem to be at odds as to whether it is a subspecies of the Spruce Grouse or a distinct species on its own. Honestly, I couldn't care less. It differs from the Spruce Grouse of the north in that its tail is all black, with white spots.

Like most grouse, they are loathe to fly, and can easily be approached by a slow moving photographer. Apparently they are noted for their territorial wing-clap display, but I've never heard this.

I had originally intended to have this up in time for Valentine's Day, because why not? But then I got the idea to put out an applier, and then I randomly took some pictures of great items I wanted to share, and one thing lead to another so that this picture is only just getting finished now.

Still, I'm happy with how it turned out. :D

This is one of my family's seven pet dogs. This good-looking female canine, however, was not what I intended to photograph when I went out with a camera in my hand. Finding not even a single interesting subject to shoot, I then started to walk back toward home. Unexpectedly, this dog, named Kirei, came up to me. And the rest of the story is this head shot of her, which I snapped when she momentarily looked up, directly facing me.

I hadn't intended on being out this day. Intel was received that westbound J712 for Decatur would have CSXT 4685, the "Spirit of Mulberry" leading. Having an SD70AC leader was a rare treat as those didn't seem to make it to the midwest often, much less the branchlline that was the Decatur sub. I caught up to the train at Dana, IN, and decided that Scottland, IL, the first town across the state line would be a good choice for a photo.

The clouds parted long enough, maybe a minute, tops, for me to get one sunny shot. I did continue to Chrisman, five miles west, for another shot before heading back home, 40 minutes away.

…… We went for a circular walk (pun intended) around Ironbridge & Coalport area this morning before it got too hot! The area is steeped in history and indeed was the heart of the Industrial Revolution back in the day! Very rural now and a far cry from those noisy, steamy, smokey days!!I This shot is the bridge that replaced the ‘Wood’ bridge (The Woodbridge pub here is a reminder of that!), this ’new’ replacement was built for horse & carts back in 1818 and still takes traffic today. As I climbed the slope into Biggin Dale the fog started to lift so I decided to retrace my steps back along the top to Beresford Dale. I'm glad I did as I was treated to some good light as the Sun fought to break through.

Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares (250 acres) of reclaimed land in the Central Region of Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The park consists of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden (in Marina South), Bay East Garden (in Marina East) and Bay Central Garden (in Downtown Core and Kallang). The largest of the gardens is Bay South Garden at 54 hectares (130 acres). Its Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world.

Gardens by the Bay is part of the nation's plans to transform its "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden", with the aim of raising the quality of life by enhancing greenery and flora in the city. First announced by the Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the National Day Rally in 2005, Gardens by the Bay was intended to be Singapore's premier urban outdoor recreation space, and a national icon.

Being one of the popular tourist attractions in Singapore, the park received 6.4 million visitors in 2014, while topping its 20 millionth visitor mark in November 2015.

The underground station HafenCity University is located 16.5 meters below ground level. The design follows a draft by the Raupach architectural office, the lighting planning office Pfarré Lighting Design and the industrial designers Stauss & Pedrazzini from Munich, who won the previous design competition.

The walls and ceilings are clad with dark brown, smooth metal panels. The station is illuminated by 12 light containers, each weighing six tons, which hang lengthwise from the ceiling. They consist of a steel framework clad in frosted glass, inside which 280 coloured LEDs provide different lighting moods that can be adjusted to the time of day or season or the weather and are reflected by the wall metal plates.

The shape of the lighting containers and the wall and ceiling design are intended to be reminiscent of harbour elements.

On weekends and public holidays, light and music compositions are performed in the underground station on the hour between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The light containers change colour to match the classical music.

The underground station received the Radiance Award for Excellence in Lighting Design 2013 from the International Association of Lighting Designers.
