Circa 1912 postcard view of firefighters and their equipment at Plymouth, Indiana. This building still stands south of Washington Street on the east side of North Center Street (220 North Center Street). The 1905 and 1910 Sanborn™ fire insurance map sets for Plymouth show this building with the 56-foot-tall hose tower that is still part of the structure today. Both map sets show the City Council room on the second floor of the building. A dwelling stood on the north side of this building. That house was on the southeast corner at Washington Street.
The fire department descriptions in the two map sets differed slightly. In 1905, there was one chief, two assistant chiefs and three volunteer companies with 23 men each. The vehicles included a two-horse hose wagon and a hook and ladder truck. Only Michigan and Laporte streets were paved with bricks.
The fire department included one chief and 64 volunteers in 1910. The listed vehicles remained the same, but additional streets were paved with bricks. These included West Garro, West Washington and West Jefferson streets between Michigan and Second streets; Center Street between Laporte and Harrison streets; and Plum Street between Laporte and West Jefferson streets.
The license plate on the fire truck pre-dates 1913. The postcard was copyrighted by “Steele.” This was probably Jesse M. Steele, who was a photographer in Plymouth for many years.
