"Insurance" Pumpkins
We picked these two little pumpkins in order to allow more growth into the bigger pumpkins on the plants. I keep an "insurance" pumpkin on each plant for a while, finally cutting them off the vine when it looks as if the primary pumpkin is doing well. I have had the primary pumpkin get rotten suddenly in the past, and then the insurance pumpkin at least gives me something for my efforts. One year my best pumpkin was the insurance pumpkin and was 524 pounds. These two were 230 pounds (orange) and 144 pounds (white).
