I noticed there was a lot less visible steam in the stack exhaust from the Climax compared to the Heisler when both were run together on Saturday. I am thinking lack of insulation on the steam pipes contributed to the difference, so tonight I wrapped the pipes using black silicone tubing that I had slit lengthwise.

Ahead of delivering the Budget to Parliament today, Mr Swinney visited a scheme, delivered by City of Edinburgh Council and part-funded by the Scottish Government, installing insulation for households at risk of fuel poverty.

these are in reverse order...

Asbestos insulation of 8 large calorifiers, the insulation is quite thick and will need injecting with surfactant to remove in the safest manner.

Young Mr. Reed is enamored with the insulation blower nozzle.

Houses in mild winter areas like California are notoriously leaky and minimally insulated. Thus my number one tip for reducing one's carbon footprint is to have the house envelope sealed so less energy is used for heating and air conditioning because less air leaking in or out all the time. This we had done yesterday and today they blew in another layer of insulation which should help keep the house warmer in the winter. It already feels more snug and less drafty.

We had an energy audit done by Sustainable Spaces, a green retrofitting company, who then contracted the work. They but a blower fan door on our front door to suck all the air out while watching pressure readings on a meter. (I forgot to take a picture of that.) While the air is being sucked out, you can feel where all the holes are by the cool air coming in at gaps around doors, plumbing and light fixtures and the fireplace. That's where they applied lots of caulking.

We don't have air conditioning, but hopefully the insulation will keep the house a little cooler in the summer too. I wanted to go for a whole house fan, but that just cools the house faster at night and doesn't do anything for you when it's still hot out. I still refuse to put in air-conditioning although the company did recommend a mini-split air conditioner and heat pump to replace our obsolete, no longer allowed, floor-register furnace. The mini-split system has no ducts just units in several rooms, but it wouldn't save on energy because more of the house would be heated. So I'm looking into a fireplace insert instead, even though burning wood is emission producing. Better to have an insert that is efficient with minimal emissions than an open fireplace. It also gives us options when gas gets even more expensive.

Asbestos insulation board ceiling to integral garage.

This boarding is often mistaken for asbestos cement sheeting which is a dense bonded and safer material.

Builders often expose themselves by disturbing this material, thinking it is safe to do so.
