ANSBACH, Germany – Installation Management Command, Europe (IMCOM-E) Region Director Mr. Michael Formica, presided over a U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach (USAG Ansbach) Change of Command ceremony Wednesday, 18 July on Barton Barracks. During the ceremony Col. Benjamin Jones relinquished command to Col. Steven Pierce. In his remarks Formica was unstinting with his praise of Jones's many accomplishments and leadership and said Pierce was "The perfect candidate to succeed Jones and to lead the Ansbach garrison into the future".

Among the collateral events of the 55th Venice Biennale, Dora Garcia’s “The Joycean Society” at Spazio Punch on the island of Giudecca is one of the most compelling, despite a presentation that looks forbidding at first glance.
Garcia is the winner of the 45th International Contemporary Art Prize (PIAC), which is awarded every three years by Monaco’s Pierre Foundation. For the first time, the winner’s work is being shown in Venice, though Garcia herself was also here two years ago when she represented Spain at the 2011 Biennale. The artist is also known for participating in international exhibitions such as Documenta 13 and the Lyon Biennale; her work has been exhibited at Tate Modern, MACBA, and the Pompidou Center.
With artistic direction by Abdellah Karoum, a permanent member of the prize committee and the future director of Mathaf in Doha, Garcia devoted several years of research to a project that consists of a show and a film about a group of readers of James Joyce’s “Finnegans Wake.”
The setting includes wallpaper with enigmatic diagrams and sketches and a table with several annotated works by Joyce, including “Finnegans Wake” and a book on the exhibition. In a video playing on a parallel wall, different protagonists are plunged into the hermeneutics of texts by Joyce, with some Freud thrown in.
“It’s a natural process where I translate my thinking into the physical space, so to speak. The books on the table are the three works by Joyce: 'Ulysses,' 'Finnegans Wake,' and 'Dubliners,' altered and annotated by me — enhanced, you could say,” Garcia told BLOUIN ARTINFO.
The video is the culmination of the artist’s lengthy observations of this book club over the course of several meetings where the commentators developed their interpretations. According to Garcia, “The Joycean community are all the book’s potential readers — this strange book was written for this enigmatic public.”
“The film’s structure is very simple: the length is determined by a reading session, almost in real time. Already this gives meaning, structure, and a time frame. Afterwards I inserted other conversations that helped me to construct the four characters of the story: the book club, Joyce’s grave, the academics, and the devoted Joycean,” Garcia said.
This installation thus becomes an invitation to the literary journey that is “Finnegans Wake.” Between the project's filmed scenes and the reality of the space and the tools presented by the installation, a “critical” space is opened up. Here, the viewer is confronted with the cognitive difficulty that this book represents and is led to activate his/her senses, especially the imagination. Garcia’s exhibition offers an exploration that is connected to knowledge without making knowledge its goal.
“‘Finnegans Wake’ is a book that chooses its readers; however, it’s not a book that touches everyone,” Garcia says. “It’s a book for people who want to understand the world absolutely, almost Indiana Joneses of language. So it’s an elitist book, but not for the rich or the beautiful, but for the brave who are skeptical at the same time.”
The uniqueness of this project lies in the deep understanding of Joyce’s writing and the dialogue that Garcia sets up with the Irish author's work: The viewer doesn’t learn anything, but something is shown that resembles a horizon for intellectual fulfillment. This, it seems, is what Garcia is getting at when she says, “I think that ‘Finnegans Wake’ is utopian because this text is written for the future, for a viewer who is not there yet…. I don’t question this utopia, I celebrate it.”
To this, we might add that this “viewer who is not there yet,” in addition to perhaps implying a messianic reference, also supports the idea that knowledge is developed not through a linear and discrete process, but through the interplay of connections within language itself.
Hundreds of soldiers, civilians, family members and friends gathered at the Iron Mike Conference Center Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. for the 29th Annual Fort Bragg Installation Awards. The theme for the event was 29 Years of “Going the Extra Mile.”

The reupholstered chair was transformed into a Sarah Lucas inspired piece, using period pads to stuff the tights and watermelons to fill the bra.
I used the experimental film shoot and printed the images onto acetate, which I then glued onto mirrors. I created a peep-show-inspired-box where I attached rich, velvet, red curtains, inspired by Diego Velasquez's use of rich colour to sexualise the female figure.
I framed the photograph of my Granny, making it bolder, and hung the other black and white images around her face.
The image of my Granny was also reflected into the mirrors within the peep-show-inspired-box.
I displayed my prints on the other wall, taking inspiration from Kara Walkers silhouetted paper cut-outs.
I also created a mod-roc mould of breasts, which can be seen within the next few images.

hive is an interactive light installation floating over water in the park behind Frankfurt's opera by students from School of Design Mainz for the light festival Luminale 2010. A large portion of the project has been financed already but for the construction and installation suspending 1600 LED lights like a swarm above the lake's surface we require a further 7,000 Euro. At this stage, this installation (white PVC pipe and caulky/foamy stuff in between) seemed like it could be pretty much done. Cool effect, looks neat both from inside and outside the building - badabing, badaboom. Rumors began to circulate: "They're going to paint it black!" "How could they?!" As future photos will show, they did much more than paint the thing black, but the results were actually not as awful as we were predicting. I still like the simplicity of this one; the installations under Gabe's wing had a tendency to seem a bit additive. I haven't got anything really invested in simple "one thing does lots of work" concepts, but if nothing else they tend to win out on comparisons of budget.
One thing that's nice about the additive approach is that it has no hope of hiding beyond a "the script did it!" type approach: you're uanabashedly making conscious, sculptural design moves when you tack on additional fabric and so on. Potentially this gives much more ability to respond to how the thing is actually working out, and to go for the best effect (which is certainly the theme of all these things), rather than the one dictated by "the system."

The installation 'Mirrors' is three boxes which look like part of wall and shelf by the bed with different useful or memorable subjects. Each box contains different things such as book, postcard, tickets, candle and so on. Each shelf represents each individual person.
The first box is a Russian emigran`s shelf. On the wall paper there are some memorable photos with his friends and family which stayed in Tajikistan, prayer on the piece of paper, cheques and remittances home. On the shelf there are old steel mug, broken lighter, the cheapest cigarettes, plastic flower and other old and cheap things.
The second box is a shelf of young girl from the periphery. On the shelf is mess. There are a lot of banal photos with her, cosmetic magazine, empty perfume, old cotton wool, vanilla cigarettes and crumpled bank of energy drink.
The third box is a shelf of old woman from the small Russian city. All things were put neatly on the shelf. There are knitting, postcard, seeds, darned sock, porcelain cat and other things.
All these boxes have general similarity - mirror on the wall. Everybody can guess who is owner of each shelves, find good and bad sides of these persons judging by their private things and mirror helps to see themselves. Thereby in these people we can find some similarity between them and us.
Each box has an individual music which helps receive more thoughts and feelings.
