The rain storm was breath-taking. But then I have always loved the majesty and magic of a thunderstorm. They always put me back in my place and remind me how really small and insignificant I really am in comparison. No tweeks on this, I took it straight out of the camera when we got home.

"During the war, I began to appreciate life. I thought I wasn't afraid of death, but it turned out I was. I am afraid of the pain that you can feel when you die. I began to appreciate life much more. I realized that it is short and can break off at any moment, and I didn't have time for so many things. He spent his life on trifles, insignificant things, but time should be valued. Many people live as immortals. But facing death is a very important experience.”

Immersed in absolute silence,

under a sky of distant stars,

I rediscover my being, insignificant

Immerso nel silenzio assoluto,

sotto un cielo di stelle lontane,

riscopro il mio essere, insignificante

So I was reading about Simon Newcomb, an astronomer and professor who, in 1902, said "Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical and insignificant, if not utterly impossible".

Comby wasn't the only one having a laugh at the idea though. Everyone from Joseph LeConte, Lord Kelvin, Stanley Mosley, Lord Haldone and even Thomas Edison were joining in on calling BS.

So boys, check this out 🚁

It seemed more like one of those feel good moments while the otter was rubbing the fur on its head, its eyes closed and the mouth just fell open. (Sea otters spend much time rubbing their dense fur, which puts more air in the fur, improving its insulation qualities.)

It may seem insignificant to many, but the eelgrass floating nearby is a very good sign. After massive die-off and repeated attempts to replant eelgrass, finally in the last two years or so there has been a rebound. Besides being structurally important to hold parts of the bottom of the bay in place, it is very important habitat for many small fish and invertebrates--a significant cog in the ecosystem.

Here's a photo that I have just come across. I am the hiker seen in the beallach under Beinn Achaladair which we had just descended. Behind Mark who took this photo is the slightly higher Munro, Beinn a' Chreachain.

For various reasons I haven't been able to get out in the snow this winter, so fingers crossed there will be one last snowfall to come that I can take advantage of.

pure admiration.

Big walls rise in the horizon everywhere you look, it's amazing how the nature make us look so insignificant...

I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone and get both a beautiful sunset and this kind of blue hour photo. Unfortunately, the sunset was... insignificant... and so I waited for about an hour in the cold at -5 or -10 degrees with only my Thermos of coffee and some crows (more than two birds !) for company. But the result was very satisfying!

I really like the trails of light that wind their way through the old town of Bern.

Schönheit kann sich aus Vielfalt ergeben.

Alone maybe insignificant but together remarkable.

I like places of worship, although not using them myself to worship anything. But I admire, and respect the thought behind it. not an imposing, loud, and freightening place, or a place making false promises of a future no one is able to report back of.

I think, the need for evaluating, and reflecting on the happenings in ones life is universal. and these places make this possible. Eski Camii in Edirne.

I'm always excited when a new iteration of Drune opens both because they're always SO fun to explore and also for the photographic opportunities (and unique challenges) present within.

I've had this shot in my hip pocket for a few days trying to decide if I'd enter it in the photo contest (still going on! See the marvelous Sparklebottom Lasertits' post HERE ). While I'm not happy enough with it to do so, I'll still share with all you lovelies.

This is the second time I've done something on the theme of falling to my death in Drune. I'm not sure what it is about the place that draws me in that direction. I'm sure part of it is the incredible verticality present that I always want to show off in some way, but there's something more primal going on--Something in the wind of this big, rough, exotic and dangerous future that whispers in the ear of an insignificant little girl "Join me."

Visit Drune: Crossroads

The small copse, wall and ancient tumulus that is the summit of Shap. Insignificantly significant.

...What we choose, we give away.

Why blame it on the vicissitudes of fate,

When the traveler will surely come

Where will his steps lead him?

There is no excuse for those who walk into the abyss,

Everyone understands the eternal law:

The light illuminates those who love the light,

Darkness consumes those who love darkness....

(Hieromonk of New Chersonesos)....I heard in a simple cell

An old man praying wonderfully

Prayed quietly before me:

"Father of men, Father of Heaven!

May Thy eternal name

Be sanctified by our hearts;

May Thy kingdom come,

May Thy will be done with us,

As in heaven, so on earth.

Give us daily bread

With Thy generous hand;

And as we forgive men,

So we, who are insignificant before Thee,

Forgive, O Father, Thy children;

Do not cast us into temptation,

And from the evil seduction

Deliver us!"

Before the cross

Thus he prayed. The light of the lamp

Shimmered in the darkness from afar,

And the heart felt the comfort

From the old man's prayer.

(A.S. Pushkin)

The Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator) is a songbird of the genus Lanius in the shrike family (Laniidae). The range of this migratory bird, which is obligate except for the northwest African populations, is restricted to the Western Palearctic, where it occurs in four subspecies. The distribution is extensive on the Iberian Peninsula, otherwise patchy. The wintering areas are in the Sahel south of the Sahara. The breeding occurrences of the Red-headed Shrike in Central Europe, which have been decreasing for about 50 years, are now largely extinct.

Unlike most other Lanius species, the Woodchat Shrike feeds almost exclusively on larger insects. Other invertebrates and vertebrates are consumed only occasionally and usually in insignificant quantities. Large beetles, grasshoppers, cicadas and crickets form the main components of the diet.

When there is a great shortage of insects, Red-headed Shrikes also consume snails, annelids, millipedes and spiders. Vertebrates such as mice, small songbirds, lizards or frogs are part of the species' prey spectrum, but are only taken when the opportunity is particularly favourable or when the main prey is scarce. Exceptionally, the Woodchat Shrike takes plant food, such as mulberries and fruits of various Prunus species.

This image shows the magnificent sunset that occurred on the south coast of Cornwall on 23rd January 2023. From what started out as a dim glow on the distant horizon, the glow then transformed into a sky that was ablaze with deep burning pinks and oranges. It was hard to know where to point the camera, but the light show lasted a fair while - maybe 20+ minutes in total, so I was able to try about half a dozen different compositions. In this image, I wanted to show how relatively insignificant the village of Porthleven is in relation to the vastness of the sea

Some of my favorite photographic botanical subjects have an elusive identity. Yet, whenever I talk walks in our neighborhood, I make a point of looking for these under-appreciated wild weeds. As A. A. Milne said, 'Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them.'

A really insignificant flower, pale green and small - and then I looked a little closer....

Awe can make us feel small and insignificant. I like that feeling. Coyote Gulch dished up awe around every bend. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. Apparently multiple health benefits can be obtained from experiencing awe. Maybe we crave that feeling and get our fix on Flickr or from getting out into the natural world.

The first flowering of ivy occurs at 10 years of age: in itself almost insignificant, it then produces as fruit black and globose berries highly toxic to humans but appreciated by the birds that eat them during the winter period. Furthermore, ivy is a honey plant: bees use the nectar of its flowers to produce a rapidly crystallizing honey that they will use as a hive reserve for the winter.

My first attempts to photograph frost...

I was freezing my ... hands ... off, as well as most other body parts, crawling in the frost will do that to you... :) So I didn't really take good enough care to the details, composition, DoF control, focus... such small, insignificant details seemed less important in the larger scheme of things... :)

thanks GLM, for the new title... :) I'd say he passed 2,42 cm, wouldn't you say? :)

Scotland's Buachaille Etive Mor waterfall with a kiss of light illuminating the 1021m peak for Stob Dearg in the backdrop. That touch of light may seem insignificant but it actually makes the image for me drawing the eye in through the scene. This was taken around 2 months ago but it really seems like 2 years ago now. Strange times indeed! Take care everyone - we'll get through this ✊ #scotland #photography #glencoe

Food for thought :

The bee is fast becoming an endangered species in many parts of the world. In France, the newly arrived Asian hornet is just another nail in the coffin. Without the bee, we too could well become an endangered species! :-(( - Love thy neighbour and thy bee however small and insignificant it may appear to be.

The appearance of the people

Some people seem to be better than they are. Some people seem to be worse than they are. But those, who do not deceive theirselves by the appearance of the people, are often the insignificant-looking people.
